Dolphin Beach House
Ranked #10 of 45 Clifden B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Managed by Clodagh and Dara, this long established b&b is quietly situated about 4 miles from Clifden on the lower Sky Road. If you don't want serene surroundings, gob-smacking coastal views, a comfortable room and some of the nicest hosts you are likely to come across then Dolphin Beach House is not for you. It was certainly all that we needed for an all too short week-end stay.

With a distinctly rustic character our double room provided a nice en-suite and a very comfy bed. Some will bemoan the absence of the ubiquitous flat screen (a nice change actually) and complimentary tea & coffee (in plentiful supply on demand in the lounge). Personally, I found more than adequate compensation in hosts ready to oblige in whatever way possible. This included arranging restaurant bookings, calling taxis (about 12 euro one way into Clifden) and sorting out tyre depots on a Sunday!! The sun lounge (if the weather is against you) and external terrace overlooking the coast are havens of peace and quiet.

Dolphin House boasts a great breakfast comprised of cereals (including porridge) fruits and hot selections. Smoked salmon can be had and if you are lucky kippers may also be available. Dinner was not available during our stay (we chose, anyhow, to dine in Clifden) but I understand this was an exception. Probably best to enquire when booking.

Clodagh's family have a long tradition in hospitality and it is clear she is keeping the tradition alive and knows well what works. Thank you very much.

Dolphin Beach House charge about 100 euro per night.

We visited the Dolphin Beach House to check it out some weeks prior to a weekend stay. We were stunned by the secluded beauty of the property and the scenery, which took our breath away, and we knew we had chosen well. Our room was clean, nicely furnished with a comfortable bed, and afforded a superb view over the bay as does the dining room and lounge area. Breakfasts were great and catered for all tastes and requirements. There is a feeling of calm and tranquility at Dolphin Beach House and hosts Clodagh and Dara could not make you more welcome or do enough for you. We'll be back some time and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone visiting the Connemara region.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great but the ground floor ones open out onto their own patio, great if you want t...

Although the road to here is scary it is well worth it. The view from our Bay View room was fantastic. Rooms large and well kept. People here are very nice and helpful. They go out their way to help. Food good but not great. Short walk to beach with lovely views. Would highly recommend this place.

This is one of the most exceptional places I have ever had the pleasure of staying. The grounds are exquisite! The room was comfortable with lots of personal touches including a hand carved bed by a family member. The sliding glass door offers a magical view of the sea. which is just steps away for picture taking and exploring. The bed was comfortable but this place is about so much more than comfort.

There is a feeling of family the moment you walk in. We were warmly welcomed by Joanna, who showed us around and encouraged us to make ourselves at home and enjoy the property. She was completely patient with all aspects of our arrival and check in, and gave us great suggestions for our trip into town. We told her we wanted to hear traditional music but were a little uneasy about the narrow roads at night. She suggested, and we took advantage of an excellent taxi service run by Michael and Eileen. Eileen was like an old friend after our round trip ride with her into town that night. It was a perfect worry free way to enjoy what Clifden has to offer in terms of live music and fun! There were nine musicians at the session that night and many were from other countries and could just watch another musician and jump in to the intricate jigs and reels. It was fascinating! They were all amazing musicians!

On to Clodagh! Our proprietress was warm and friendly with a great sense of humor. We felt most welcomed by her, and her food was delicious. We really felt like we stayed at a home away from home. She was also helpful getting us on our way to Kylemore Abbey, a must see!

Some of our most incredible pictures of Ireland were taken in and around this lovely place on a spectacular sunny day by the sea. I sincerely hope to return to this little slice of heaven!!

Room Tip: The lower level was wonderful, with direct access to the grounds.

This is one of the best places I have ever stayed (the other is Eureka in Mauritius). If you go to Ireland, go just to stay at Dolphin....The view is stunning as is the house, the room, the people who run it. It's hard to find initially but it's well worth the effort.

Room Tip: Take a room on the first floor.

Stayed here as a base for taking some photographs around Connemara. Everything was out of this world location, room, service and breakfast. My tripod needed adjusting after a day in the bog and I was given free reign if the tool shed!! Found the Allen Key I needed. Sorted. I writing this now coz I have a yearning to oh back!!

This beautiful house - starting from the color of its outside walls through the clever architectural design to the warm and very tasty furniture throughout - is surrounded by a nice garden and situated off a very small road - i.e., no traffic - at a distance from other houses and with a splendid view on the sea (a few steps away!) through the very large windows.

The room is quiet (except when loud late-coming guests make noise in the corridor, but that's true of any place...), large, the bathroom is large, the beds are very comfortable, and everything is very clean and taken care of.

Our room didn't get the wifi, and the hostess said she was aware of the problem and would add a router in that part of the house. But the public spaces are so large and comfy that one could do wifi there without disturbing anyone else nor being disturbed. This has also the advantage of contributing to enjoying the room for itself and the view, without being hooked on the net all the time...

The breakfast is simply delicious: a large buffet to help oneself, plus a selection of menus.

And the hostess: nice, kind, fun, efficient.

Room Tip: We didn't see the other rooms, except we noticed they differ in the view of the sea they have. S...
