“Ik missed a friendly host”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

We stayed here with a group of friends recently. The location is ideal as its very near the town centre. Breakfast was perfect and plenty of variety.
I missed just a few things : Our host wasnt the friendliest of persons. Although she was correct and polite, she missed the hospitality that we would have expected from her.
Secondly, the showers have very little pressure but that could have just been our room.

We )2 couples) spent 2 nights at Buttermilk lodge in July 2013. Arrived by car with 4 bycicles for some active weekend in Conemmara. Loved it. Clean rooms, superb breakfast, nice staff, parking for both car and bycicles,... Loved it, recommend it.

Just back home after travelling about Ireland including 2 nights in Buttermilk Lodge. Only booked it late on and was really looking for somewhere cheap, a single room, but as I was having a bit of difficulty, I decided to pay a bit more than planned and booked a double room in Buttermilk Lodge, no singles available. It was well worth this bit extra as Buttermilk Lodge is lovely, my room was better than a lot of 4 star hotels I have been in, good selection at breakfast, all lovely. Very confortable bed, nice ensuite, good toiletries etc. even a wee sewing kit. There is a corner in the guests' lounge with tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, wine glasses/other glasses, small fridge for guests. They will also provide a really good packed lunch for €5. Loads of info for guests to read including menus from restaurants. In the room was also a folder put together with walks within a 30 minute radius, showing travel details, difficulty, time etc. and what should be taken. Nice touches everywhere and everyone was very helpful. Just a short walk to main part of town, slight incline on way back, but easy walk.

Really pleased I booked this, was a nice treat, after budget b&b's. Could say best guesthose I have stayed in.

We stayed for three nights at Buttermilk Lodge and what a great introduction to Irish B&B's it turned out to be. Nice quite location just a few minutes walk from Clifden town centre.
Our room was was very clean with a great ensuite and the biggest bed we've ever slept in.The breakfasts were excellent with lots of variety and really set you up for the rest of the day.
Many thanks Cathriona and Patrick.

Room Tip: The bedroom overlooking the entrance drive has a king size bed

The room was ok but the shower didnt work properly. The owner was not friendly but happy to take our money. The Irish breakfast was dripping with oil. There is much better value elsewhere in Clifden for half the price!

OToole97, Owner at Buttermilk Lodge Guesthouse, responded to this review, 11 July 2013
I welcome the opportunity to reply to this “review”. On Sat July 6, 2 men arrived to check in to 2 rooms for single occupancy. We had a reservation for one man but none for the second, he had paperwork for a reservation with him but this was for a room for single occupancy on Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30. On these dates we were fully booked and turned away business. As is our policy as the guest did not contact us to cancel or change the booking the reservation total was charged to the credit card. The guest was aware of this. I told him I had one room left for the night and the cost, he felt he should not have to pay as he had already paid. I explained that that was for the previous weekend. He and his friend then asked to and paid for the rooms that evening (guests normally pay on departure). They were offered tea/coffee etc but declined. They asked if bicycled which they had booked had arrived, when I said no they said probably just as well as they didn’t want them with the weather. After they had gone out a local company arrived with bicycles, I explained that they had gone out and had said they probably didn’t want them. The rep. said he would phone them. Later that evening the men were sitting in the sitting room having tea, I went in to them and told them that the bicycle hire man had called. The guest in question replied that they did not want the bikes, because the weather wasn’t suitable for cycling. He asked for the mobile number for the bicycle man, I did not have it but said it would probably show on his friends phone as that was the number he was going to call earlier. The next morning the men came for breakfast, they were asked if everything was ok during breakfast and said yes. They did not come to check out but left the keys on the front desk.

Nice guesthouse. Clean, quiet. Beds are a bit hard for my taste but warm and with nice bedding. Breakfast had several choices to choose from and the dinner recommendations were excellent. Excellent area and lots to do.

We arrived at Buttermilk Lodge guest house following suggestion of a B&B owner in Killarney. What a charming guest house with very nicely decorated rooms impeccable cleanliness and a warm welcoming atmosphere. Cathriona and Patrick were most gracious as owners. Cathriona was most helpful in directing us to the area which is just breathtaking. The guest house was within walking distance to the centre of the very charming town of Clifdern. The breakfast was fantastic as was the service. Cathriona was kind enough to suggest and reserve accomodations at our next destinations. Buttermilk Lodge Guest House is a winner, we suggest strongly to travellers to visit this beautiful area and this unique and warm guest house.
