“stayed 1 night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

I stayed here for 1 night, a solo traveler and it was a pleasant stay. The room was spacious, clean and warm, the breakfast was good and it was only a 10 min walk to the center. The price was fair and the owners were very friendly. Id stay here again.

Myself and 3 male colleagues stayed for a long weekend with owners Patrick and Catriona for a retirement celebration....
The food, accommodation, service and cleanliness were brilliant....
We were handy (3 mins) for the town and of course the pubs.
With heavy hearts and memories that will live with us forever we had to leave sunny Clifden Town...Well done Buttermilk Lodge

Room Tip: They are all good rooms

Can't say enough about our stay here. We were so well-taken care of by Catriona and Patrick. We stayed 7 nights, and didn't want to leave. The room/bed was comfortable, the black out curtains helped us sleep and get rid of our 8 hour jet lag!, the breakfast was amazing every day with choices that were terrific and tasty. This B&B (it felt like a small intimate bijou type hotel, really) was spotless, lovely, and we were completely relaxed here.

The O'Tooles take care of guests without hovering, which husband and I both appreciate. We found so many books in their library in the sitting room that were so helpful to read in understanding the history and culture of Connemara. Catriona was always busy during our time here--because it was their busy season-- but always had time for us when we asked a question or needed some advice or directions. They even did the one load of laundry for us in a little over an hour as soon as we asked them (which we didn't expect) and then because we stayed so long with them didn't charge us for it. We weren't expecting that either. So generous.

Personal touches were terrific: list of menus for restaurants, the weather report printed every morning, wireless connections were fine and there's a public computer if you don't want to drag your laptop on your trip, a list of pubs that play trad music and the times they start, the list goes on and on. The lodge is located (for us, we walk fast) less than a 5" walk to town, but not IN town, so we parked our car in the lodge parking lot and didn't have to use it much except to go on day trips for exploring, hiking, beaches etc.) I didn't mind the cow theme-I mean, it was actually kind of fun and eclectic. Peat fire in the evening, tea/coffee/biscuits available whenever you like with an electric kettle, and we even used the little tiny fridge in the sitting room to store our bottle of wine for an evening picnic.

I love this lodge and if we can ever afford to fly back to Ireland for another trip, Connemara and the Buttermilk Lodge it is. Thanks, Catriona and Pat. I fell in love with Connemara thanks in part to you both!

When we arrived we were greeted by one of the owners (presumably Patrick as he didn't introduce himself) whom I thought seemed a little uncomfortable with the process. I suspect this is normally undertaken by his wife! Nevertheless we were given a choice of rooms and offered a cup of tea and fresh home made fruit cake which is always welcome after a day of travelling.
The room was bright and sunny and on the first floor up some steep stairs so we left our cases in the car and only brought up the bare essentials. Although free wifi was available throughout the house, it was a bit unreliable in our room. The room only had a double bed rather than the more common queen but it was comfortable enough and the right size for the room. The weather on the west coast of Ireland has been very mild and the doona (duvee) on the bed too warm for me this time of the year with the alternative of a bed sheet only resulting in a somewhat uncomfortable night's sleep.
The bathroom was clean and relatively modern but a bit small although quite functional. One of the other rooms we looked at had the shower and toilet in the ensuite but the wash basin in the bedroom which we thought a bit odd.
There were plenty of choices for breakfast and fresh fruit and home made scones, croissants, jams and bread available.
I just think the plethora of cow memorabilia highlighting the "buttermilk" them was a little over the top but in reality this didn't detract from a pleasant and most hospitable experience.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back of the house and upstairs and received lots of sun

This is a lovely B&B and super clean with all the extras! Cathriona O'Toole, the owner and hostess, is an absolute top-notch hostess and is incredibly informative with providing helpful information and useful tips on the area and sites. The B&B has all the amenities and personal touches and little extras are evident in the rooms and throughout the common area. Cathriona definitely knows how to run an efficient, comfortable, and enjoyable B&B and the breakfast menu and choices are excellent. The food gets a A++ in our book! This is our 4th trip to Ireland in 5 years and definitely the best B&B we have ever stayed at in our travels throughout Ireland. The B&T is also a great location in Clifden for travel through Connemara. This B&B ranks 5 stars and more!

Room Tip: We stayed in the family room with the double and single bed and the room was very comfortable and is...

Had a lovely stay in Buttermilk. Our room was spacious clean & comfortable. Breakfast had great choice.. We opted for the full Irish & it tasted yum. Hosts were very friendly & helpful. Location to Clifden is good with a short walk into town taking the short cut through te lane. Definitely would stay again & recommend to others.

This super clean place is a great choice when traveling to Clifden. We spent two nights here recently. The Lodge is very well managed by the owners who definitely have a professional attitude about what they do. They are so thorough in providing information, extras in the room and lounge to assist guests. We loved the location--could easily walk into town in just a few minutes yet felt we were in a quiet spot away from everything. The peat fire in the fireplace was a perfect touch. Breakfasts were totally homemade and more than one could possibly eat was provided.
