“Comfortable Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2013

Enjoyed my stay. Good location on the River Illen which my room looked out on. Unfortunately the weather was particularly bad but it made the river look even more dramatic. Found the staff friendly and helpful (the blonde girl in reception with the bob is really nice and really friendly). My first room was small but clean and comfortable but I was upgraded to a larger room as the WiFi in my room was unavailable.

The early bird menu was good value and the food was delicious. I had my breakfast served in my room as the cost was only €2.50 extra which is fantastic value. I had Eggs Benedict which is rarely seen on hotel menus these days and it was beautifully cooked.

Would go back if WiFi situation improves.

Room Tip: Ask for room looking out on river.

This was our second visit to the West Cork Hotel. A terrific hotel with a real West Cork Welcome. The owner checked with guests on how they were enjoying their stay. This is a lovely gesture. The food was lovely and the service excellent. The staff worked so well even when under pressure. It is lovely to get a nice warm feeling in an establishment

This was our second visit to the West Cork Hotel. It has a lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food was lovely and the service excellent. The bedroom was 'nice', small but clean overlooking the street. The owner was very attentive and checked with the guests regarding their stay. This a nice personal touch.

We will be back.

I stayed here to attend the Celtic Cook Off during the annual ‘Taste of West Cork’ event in September. Although a regular visitor to West Cork, it was my 1st time staying in this hotel.
This is an older hotel so you’re not going to get rooms like the Radisson or Hyatt with foyers the length of streets, but you will get Irish hospitality at its best , in a very comfortable hotel with a beautiful setting.

The reception area is light and specious and has large antique tables with daily papers and local books of interest. Complimentary freshly brewed coffee / tea and pastries are also available - a lovely touch in a hotel ! The restaurant and bar are both off the reception area and the bar also serves food till 9pm for any hungry travellers arriving late. There is an outside terrace available which is located on an old bridge and really nice on a summers evening.

The bedroom was compact with a lovely view over the river. Room included tea/coffee facilities, hairdryer, tv, etc. The bathroom was small but had everything you need with bath and shower. There is a few steps & small stairs around the room area’s and no lift in this hotel, which may not be suitable for everyone.

Breakfast is top notch and the best hotel breakfast I’ve had in a long time. All locally supplied produce including Rosscarbery bacon & sausages, which have been winning “Great Taste” awards for a long time. There are plenty of breakfast options for vegetarians too. I didn’t eat in the restaurant but the bar food was good and had a decent selection of food from soup & sandwiches to main courses and a wine menu too.

Overall if your looking for genuine Irish hospitality in a lovely family run hotel, to enjoy all that the bustling town of Skibbereen has to offer - you won’t be disappointed with this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a river view

We were driving through Skibbereen early evening and found the West Cork Hotel. Our room was clean and basic, bed comfortable and clean, plenty of good sized towels. We didn't eat here so can't comment on food. We had a good sleep and also a lovely view of the river flowing past with swans... very nice homely feel to this hotel. We would stay again. Check in and out no problem.

My tour took us to the town of Skibbereen where we stayed at the West Cork Hotel. I was struck by the stately atmosphere once inside the hotel. There is a small bar to the left as one comes in and a larger one just down the hall. The restaurant to the right opens into the lobby with the "front" desk which is actually way in the back of the first floor. What really surprised me was the skeleton key we were given to our room! A true skeleton key! And it worked.

The bar was very active and provided live music a couple of nights the week I was there. The room was very large and comfortable. It was also clean. What thrilled me was the ability to make a decent cup of tea since the water pot had not had coffee in it and the hotel provided little tubs of milk, not cream, which every true tea drinker knows is what should be used in tea.

Breakfast was excellent, especially the French toast. Not so, the group dinner we had in rooms beyond the restaurant. The service was far too slow and the food was non-descript and not very tasty. The dessert made up for the deficits of the dinner. That said, would I stay there again, probably.

Thank you for your review
I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and your room, however I am so sorry to hear you did not enjoy your group dinner. We do our very best to ensure groups are served quickly and I am sorry you did not feel this was the case with your group. I have passed your comments to both our Head Chef and Restaurant Manager so we will take these on board and put actions in place. Thank you for your feedback
Kind Regards

Regrettably we only stayed at the West Cork Hotel on the last night of our holiday in Ireland. How imaginative and original to serve breakfast until midday! Very useful for us as we had an evening flight from Cork. No ordinary breakfast either - the menu selection was extensive and impressive. Highly recommended. Congratulations.

We stayed at the West Cork Hotel to attend Celtic Cook Off 2013 and the VM dinner the night before. We had a great room with a lovely room overlooking the Ilen River. Our breakfast was the full Irish and was all West Cork products - sausages, name, bacon, eggs black & white puddings and potatoes. Just wonderful and set us up for a day of Food Festival activities.

The hotel was set up perfectly for this amazing event. Six chefs from the Celtic regions cooking and using food products from West Cork vying for the title of best Celtic Chef. The staff at the hotel were fabulous especially the bar staff in the grand ballroom where over 200 people were watching, eating and drinking while the chefs prepared their creations.

This was the second time we have taken in this event and we are hoping to include this in our annual travel plans. If you like good food prepared with local products and lots of love this is a food event that you will not want to miss. Ten days of food related events including farm walks, visits to fish smokeries, wonderful farmer's market and wonderful people. This is amust for you.

We will be back.
