That's the only way to get to The Fish Kitchen...by going up a narrow staircase with the hope no one is coming down since there's only room for one at a time! But the climb is absolutely worth it. The Fish Kitchen is located above a fish market in the center of town, no more than 150 yards from the waters of Bantry Bay.
The first thing to know about this very hidden gem is that you MUST make a reservation. There are only about 8-10 tables depending on arrangement. The night we were there at least 5-6 groups of hungry walk-ins were turned away...and that was midweek.
There are many great seafood restaurants in West County Cork, Ireland all the way from Kinsale to Schull and Goleen. The Fish Kitchen is as good, if not better than any of them. The hospitality is warm and friendly. The staff is knowledgeable. This is a husband/wife business with a few relatives and friends helping out. All aim to please. And then there's the food! Everything is very fresh, much of it from just outside the door in Bantry Bay. Though there are a few meat courses, the idea here is fish: shell fish and ocean fish all cooked to perfection and served with abundant sides. The wine list is small but has some fine choices. And the dessert menu is hard to turn down. Tables are a little close together as you might expect but the four of us still had our space and never felt our conversation was mixing with that coming from the next table. The West Cork area is well known to European tourists as the amount of audible French and German proves. Americans have yet to discover this scenic area in any great number however. Bantry is a great place to start. And the Fish Kitchen is the perfect place for dinner the first night in town...you might just go back a few more times!

We have been going to West Cork on holidays for a number of years, but this was the first time we ate here and we loved it. It is a very unimposing entrance, up above a fish shop, but it is excellent - the monk fish was spectacular and the seafood chowder was fantastic. My sister is not a seafood lover, but she enjoyed her meal, although the vegetarian option offered was not very enticing - she went for steak and loved it.

The staff were lovely, there was a great bit of fun and a nice buzz - we will be back on a regular basis

We had a delicous dinner and we liked the atmosphere. But it is an absolute must to book a table otherwise you have no chance.

Dropped in for lunch into the Fish Kitchen. Do make a reservation in advance as this place is so popular that it was full and we had to wait 20 mins for a table. I am not mad about fish but had the fishcakes here and they were divine. My husband had seafood chowder and prawns. He said it was the best seafood chowder that he had ever tasted. The service was very friendly and efficient even though the place was mad busy. Place is quite small so you are very close to other diners but well worth it for the food. Toilet and restaurant were so clean too. Very impressed with my lunch there.

We always try to make a point of eating in this restaurant whenever we are in the area on holidays. As others have pointed out, it is a small place so either leave lunch until after 2.00 pm or reserve a table.

Although I am not a big fish fan, I have always managed to find a dish that I can try such as chicken salad or cod. My husband loves the fish chowder and really enjoys the wide variety of fresh fish available . My only grumble would be the overuse of chips with most dishes. Why not try potatoe gratin or even champ?

The best bit for me is the wonderful dessert selection!! So many delicious choices and all appear to be homemade and fresh.

Graham Norton appears to be a regular customer when he is in town but whatever you do don't acknowledge him! We made the mistake of just saying hello as we past him and he didn't take if to well!
