Owner description: Bantry House and Garden is a stately home in southwest Ireland situated right on Bantry Bay with panoramic views of the bay and the caha mountains. The estate is owned by Egerton and Brigitte Shelswell-White and is managed by their daughter Sophie and her partner Josh. It has been in the family since the 1700s. The house contains original furniture and objects d'art. The garden is laid out over 7 terraces with a fountain, large wisteria circle and 100 steps leading up to the woodland. The house, garden and tearoom is open to the public daily from easter to october. The estate hosts weddings, music festivals and fairs. We have a separate review page for our B&B accommodation.

“A lovely way to spend a couple of hours”

Lovely place to ramble, the gardens are gorgeous - a favourite for children is to run up and down the 100 steps - the view is well worth it on a sunny day - the coffee shop is lovely, with all homemade cakes. The house is worth a trip and some interesting factors if you do the tour - very enjoyale

Dear Ginnyhan
great to read you enjoyed a sun filled day here at BH. Today sadly, it is raining! The 100 steps is indeed great for children gets them nice and tired! Im sure you were all ready for tea and cake after that walk.
Best wishes, Sophie Shelswell-White

“Stunning stately home”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014 via mobile

Came here to attend 2 back to back Traditional Irish concerts on Sat Aug 23

Took the opportunity to walk in the Gardens & take some photographs before the concerts & before the light faded.

The Gardens are stunning but I wish I could have visited in spring as I think the Rhododendrons would be quite spectacular then. The Gardens are well maintained & obviously benefit from the warm Gulf Stream in the surrounding Atlantic as there are plants here that are more suited to much warmer climes.

There are spectacular views out over Bantry Bay from outside the front of the house - great for taking photos as it's in an elevated position.

The house itself is very imposing & has the potential to be very spectacular but it needs quite a bit of upgrading which would cost mega bucks I'm sure.

The house is full of really interesting artifacts, brought to Bantry from all over the world over many generations.

Enjoying concerts in the spectacular library at Bantry House was a huge privilege. The concerts themselves were outstanding - the quality of the musicianship was world class & the Library lends itself to such events. Sadly I could only get tickets for Sat night as Sunday was totally booked out, with a long waiting list. Next year I will be booking for all the concerts.......

Bantry House & Gardens also has a lovely tea shop which was sadly closed when we visited.

I will be back for sure as I just love this house, gardens & whole setting. There is adequate car parking & the staff are all very efficient & friendly.

Dear Marguerite W
Its great to read you enjoyed the Masters of Tradition Music Festival this past weekend. It is proving very popular and tickets sell out quickly! Hope you have more luck next year.
Glad you enjoyed your visit that evening before the concerts. Our tearoom is open during visitor hours 10am-5pm. Hoping on your next visit you can come during the day and enjoy a full tour of the house and garden.
Best wishes, Sophie Shelswell-White

The gardens are beautiful, we didn't go into the house as it was too expensive. The view from the garden is amazing,

Beautiful setting and gardens to walk in and photograph. View atop the 100 steps outside is so worth the trek up.
Small lunchroom with friendly staff and good food. You can lunch in or out.Interesting tour of house for small fee. Loved the afternoon spent there.

“Glad we visited”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

As this place seems to be closing/selling in October we decided to take a tour while we had the chance. The grounds are amazing but the house is in need of renovation although the family have done their best. You would really want to be into art/artefacts/local history to enjoy the house properly. It has a nice tearooms also and courtyard to sit out on and the staff are very pleasant. It is worth going for the gardens alone..

Thanks for visiting and reviewing. Although some of the content will be sold in October this does not mean the estate will stop being open for visits, B&B and events throughout the summer season. We plan to do more restoration on the house and garden and offer a more interactive tour of the estate.

Do come back in 2015 to see what changes we have made,
