Inish Beg Estate
Reviewed 1 July 2013

My wife, son and I have just returned from a 4 night stay at Inish Beg. We stayed in one of the courtyard cottages which was charming and immediately welcoming. The privacy in the courtyard out the back was great and the tranquillity was a welcome change from Dublin. The walled garden, grounds and surrounds are gorgeous and felt very safe for our son. The setting is just beautiful.

Paul was very helpful, hospitable and pleasant to deal with. Nothing seemed to be a problem.

Overall, we had a lovely stay and we will definitely be back.

I write this whilst staying in the boathouse.

I had been looking forward to this trip, with friends travelling from Dublin, England, France, Slovenia and South Africa for a lovely weekend together.

The location and accommodation is fine however one would not recommend this place to be the recipient of your hard earned income.

There are simply other self catering locations in West Cork, just as pleasant or better, where customer satisfaction is at the centre of the service offered.

Some reviewers enjoyed their stays here however I note some highlight an issue with a certain member of staff (along with the associated poorly constructed, damage limiting, attempts to discredit the reviewer offered in response by the administration).

It seems evident from our experiences and the other reviews mentioned, if you are unfortunate to catch this member of staff on one of his bad days, who sadly is of a managerial capacity, a shadow is cast over your trip.

For example, if work commitments in the hospital setting cause delays so that your party does not arrive until 2300 or alternatively if you ask for advertised equipment, such as a BBQ, you may incur this noxious attitude. I would question why this misanthropic demeanour is in a hospitality work force ?

Ultimately the trip is made by the company you keep and the estate is big enough to ignore individuals such as that, however one believes holidays with friends should be as close to wonderful as possible and thus why risk it ?

When reviewing West Cork, it's a beautiful place with numerous establishments which do not have a string of negative reviews indicating a chronic problem with a member of staff that are not acted on.

Inish Beg is obviously not one of them.

The reviewer refers to a "string of " negative reviews and complains about the responses from management. We have received a total of 48 reviews since 2009, with most scoring Inish Beg as very good or excellent. We have responded in a measured manner to 3 reviewers 2 of whom were unhappy during their stay and one whom never stayed here.
When sending a booking confirmation we do ask guests to try and arrive between 4pm and 7pm. If this is not possible, we send them details on the exact location of their accommodation within the estate and explain that we will leave the keys out for them.
We received a telephone call from a member of this party at 7.30pm on the evening of arrival to say there was a delay and the party was two hours away so we waited in. We telephoned again at 10.45pm asking where they were. We were told they were in Skibbereen, just 4 miles from Inish Beg and would arrive shortly. Five of the party arrived at 11.35pm and the rest arrived later. The reveiwer neither apologised or offered any reason or excuse other than he was a doctor which he seemed to feel was sufficient explanation for his extremely late arrival.
The relationship between a service provider and customer does rely on a level of mutual respect which was sadly lacking in this case.

We have just returned from a second visit to Inish Beg. We previously stayed in The Boat House which was fabulous, this time around we opted for The Foresters, it is more basic in it's set up but this in no way detracts from the beautiful setting and from having a really magical time at Inish Beg. The facilities particularly the pool are excellent. We received a very warm welcome from Paul and nothing was too much trouble, including bring a BBQ up to the house within no time of asking. Inish Beg is a special place with a huge amount of work gone into restoring it and bringing it back to life, it deserves gentle respect. We had yet another great visit to West Cork, crab and langoustines galore and fantastic weather to boot. Inish Beg was the icing on the cake so to speak, wonderful for children. We can't wait to get back there.

I've stayed at Inish Beg at least four or five times over the years...and I can safely say that it is my FAVORITE place to stay in Ireland, or anywhere, for that matter. Paul and Georgiane are sublime hosts, great craic, and the accommodations are pitch perfect! I've been in the Courtyard Cottages on a romantic getaway with my partner, been with some mates at the Lodge, and also found that the cottages are a great way to travel with other couples...each gets his or her own space, but the community feel is still there. You can have your fridge stocked from Field's when you arrive, the wood is plentiful for the stove, the terraces private and wonderful. It's the goal of every workday to get back to Inish Beg!

This is the second time we have stayed at the Inish Beg and the drive into the estate once again took my breath away, it's a very beautiful and special location. We stayed in the courtyard cottages which are quite well equipped and stayed very cosy with the underfloor heating and the large log burner despite the freezing weather. We loved seeing the progress made to the estate gardens and it's a lovely walk around the grounds. We once again found the owners very friendly and helpful and providing a travel cot and high chair was ideal. Our little boy particularly enjoyed the friendly bulldog sunning herself on our doorstep one morning.

If you are looking for privacy the courtyard cottages are probably not your best bet when they are all full. Next time we would love to try the higher spec'ed boat house or lodge which looked lovely.

Just stayed with a group of friends in the Boathouse at Inis Beg. The house was very comfortable and well equipped, and despite the weather we had an excellent and relaxing weekend.

The estate itself is a pleasure to explore and a testament to the vision and energy of the owners and staff given that it was overgrown in the late 90s. The walks are well laid out and maintained and the location is excellent. Definitely a great spot for family or friends spending time together.

Room Tip: Spend time chosing your house, we had the boathouse and that was extremely private and relaxing.
