This was supposed to be a romantic getaway, but was so so marred we ended up having to laugh about it looking back. Both taps in the bathroom ran HOT water, it took nearly an hour to get breakfast served and be warned, do not leave anything behind. Despite management acknowledging they had found my belongings, nothing was ever returned and getting through to anyone on the phone via anything other than the booking line was simply not possible. Sadly the gardens were also a great disappointment, very unkempt and run down. This had been something I was looking forward to seeing, but the quality of plant care and landscape maintenance was pitiful. A nice place once upon a time I think, sad to see it in the twilight of its existence. Certainly marketing itself on past glories.

Dear bowsider5,
Thanks for your first ever review on trip advisor. I am sorry that you think our Resort is like FTowers. In my opinion the Gardens have never looked as good. We have invested so much time and effort into them, its a shame that you think they unkept and run down. Perhaps I can convince you to return and give us another review. I would love to have you change your opinion of Castlemartyr Resort.
Kindest Regards
Cathal Lynch

Just back from a one night stay in Castlemartyr Resort. First time to complain about a hotel but this was a very disappointing visit.

We stayed on a deal which included a de luxe room, bed and breakfast and a two course evening meal - at a cost of €250.

On arrival we were given room 20 - this was on the ground floor and a long way from the main part of the hotel down a lot of corridors. The room itself was a large room with a large bathroom. But things went downhill from here - the sliding door of the wardrobe was falling off - there were lots of stains on the carpet and on other areas of the floor - there were dirty scuff marks on walls and skirting boards. There were some holes on one of the bathroom walls - obviously something had been taken down but the holes not filled in - you could also see where a hook had fallen off the back of the bathroom door but not replaced - all of these were small things but not something you expect in a hotel which advertises as 5 star luxury. The room was also quite noisy and seemed to back on to some scrub land near where deliveries were being made.

After speaking to the Manager on duty she said she would try to move us to another room - she explained that there were some rooms in the main part of the hotel but that we would have to pay more for these - we declined as €250 seemed more than enough -

We were then moved to room on the second floor - this was another large room with a large bathroom - but again dirty marks on the carpet and scuff marks on walls and skirting boards - fabric was torn on a chair and lots of dust around - we even found a hairbrush in the bathroom complete with some hairs which had been left by a previous occupant. The curtains are opened and slowed by pressing an electric button but we had trouble getting at this as the knob on the drawer where the electric bottom was located had been pulled off and not replaced. Not sure what the mattress was covered with - something extremely lumpy and uncomfortable. Again not a 5 star room !

Our deal included a two course dinner - this was extremely disappointing - tiny portions and extremely slow service - eventually a very nice waitress said she would enquire what was keeping our main course !

We were hoping that breakfast would save the day but again this was not 5 star - cold toast - undercooked bacon and sausages.

On leaving we did say to reception that we were very disappointed with our stay (the girl at reception was extremely helpful and asked if we wanted to speak to the Manager again) but at that stage we just threw in the towel and checked out.

Castlemartyr advertises itself as a 5 star luxury resort - in our opinion definitely not.

We've been running a family gathering for 20 years this year, changing location almost each time and a few family members said that Castle martyr was the best yet.
The grounds are beautiful. The amenities for children and adults alike are well thought out, from a lounge to sit quietly and read or nap to a small playroom for small children to the croquet lawn and the specific times for children in the pool - little more could be done to ensure everyone enjoys their stay.

Castlemartyr is a truly beautiful place. The surroundings are most beautiful and the food and service were great. The only problem we had was that the wifi was not properly working, and when we reported this the staff had a hard time accepting this and I had to beg for them to come to my room to see for themselves that indeed the wifi was not properly working. After two nights they did not do anything about it. Besides that unfortunate problem , I highly recommend Castlemartyr.

Dear donaldmcgregor,

I am thrilled you had for the most part a lovely stay here in Castlemartyr Resort. I am sorry that your issue with the normally very good Wifi was not resolved quickly for you. There is nothing more annoying than poor Wifi i agree. We have invested heavily in the wifi system ensuring that our guests get the very best Wifi. I am sorry on this occasion my team did not follow procedure, we should have turned your 4star review into a five star one. Hopefully next time!

Warm Regards

Cathal and the Team.

My husband, our daughter and I stayed here for 2 nights of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend and I cannot say enough about it. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The food in Franchini's was lovely and breakfast gorgeous. We stayed in a Deluxe Room and it was a great size. It had everything we wanted and needed in it. The spa and pool were divine, so relaxing and with a beautiful view over the beautiful gardens. Knights bar was really enjoyable, very relaxing surroundings and a live band. They catered for children with a great Easter Egg hunt on Easter Sunday. I will most definitely be back and have no hesitation recommending this hotel to anyone.

Everything is great about this resort - rooms, service, facilities and the grounds. Highly recommended for conferences or vacations.

Loved the spa and gym.

The beds were especially comfortable with the Irish linen.
