I liked the visit, Jerpoint Abbey is very beautiful. I would prefer to have a guide who tells some history about it.

The tour was incredibly informative and so interesting. Walking around on our own we would not have learned a fraction of what we got out of this stop. The history of the Cistercian way of life and every little detail from the carvings on the tombs to the figures along the cloister arcade was fascinating. I'd say a typical visit is about an hour with the tour. A brochure is available for purchase in the main building, along with restrooms. The abbey is right along the road to Thomastown and very easy to find.

This abbey is outside of Thomastown and is a Cistercian Monastery that is very old but was very historic. It is mostly just ruins but is currently under restoration.

beautifully maintained ruin, on bend of the road which takes you by surprise and you could pass it too quickly. If you do this, turn round, it will be worth your while.

Kilkenny Castle was on our to-do list and the B&B owner recommended Jerpoint Abbey. Glad they did because the six 50-somethings in our group enjoyed it. Easy access right next to rural highway, and only one other family and a couple were with our tour of the abbey on early weekday. Very pretty setting with an old cemetery that surrounds (and enters) this abbey. Good tour relating this abbey's historical place in this rural community. Although you can see it on your own quickly, take the tour (and ask questions). Nice stone work, castle-like windows, ruins, and window columns for the photographer. Tour takes about 30-40 minutes. Plan 1-2 hours. Some in ruins and not large, but recommend it if you're in the area. We were there end of August, 2013, and weather was great.
