Deer Park Hotel Golf & Spa
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Howth

I hold my hand up - I'm a hotel snob. I like my creature comforts. I book 4 or 5 star when possible. Deer Park Hotel is a 3 star - chosen because it suited a number of needs. My only wish was that it would be clean and quiet.

So lovely to be proven wrong for all the *right* reasons. This hotel is a gem! It looks and sounds empty but it was full to the rafters with guests. Whoever designed it was a genius - it doesn't take from its beautiful surrounds or stunning views. The bar, restaurant, function rooms are set on one side while the other side houses the rooms. Windows onto the swimming pool and gym are an added bonus as you can peek out to see if it is quiet!

The room? This was a fine sized room. It was a little dated but nevertheless, perfect. The king size bed was dressed with some of the best linen I'd encountered in years and the mattress made for a great night's rest. The room has a good sized desk to work off. And a fridge! Such a bonus. The weather was so hot - being able to have chilled water was such a treat.

One thing that really annoys me when I'm staying away is the red light when the TV is off. Being a poor sleeper, that light invariably wakes me up. This hotel has its TV in a cabinet which is wonderful for contrary people like myself and does not require me to wrap the TV in towels as I have done (many times!).

We ate in the bar and restaurant - both were nice and good value. Breakfast was acceptable but unfortunately, not the best we've sampled. It provided the bare minimum and nothing to distinguish itself.

This is a well organised hotel. There was an influx of teen students staying too. They were housed in one section, ate in a separate dinning room and used the pool at designated times. A little fore thinking meant we all had a pleasant stay.

Negatives? Alas, a few. In the bathroom, it feels like towels are rationed to the bare minimum. The toilet paper is decidedly cheap. Why scrimp on these when everything else is so correct?

The gym and pool areas are a great asset but need attention. The combined area all seemed very shabby. There was an absence of drinking water too often in the gym which cut workouts short. Most annoying, however, are the number of signs telling people what is not allowed. I have never seen so much negativity in the one place and the sheer number of signs when you enter the facility, feels like you are being screamed at. It is so unnecessary. Some people will act up while the others act appropriately - that's life. Reduce the number of signs before someone loses it and rips them all down for you!

The real high point has to be the staff. They are a superb bunch of professionals. Every one was so pleasant, efficient and made the stay very special.

This is a hotel which hits the mark in so many levels. I highly recommend it!

Dear Guest,
Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a comprehensive review. We are so delighted that you enjoyed our facilities and that you found our staff pleasant and efficient - always so important! I love your remarks about the TV cabinet and can just imagine you shrouding a TV in towels!
We will sort out the signs in the gym/swimming pool area as you are correct and there are too many and they could be more condensed. We do have a drinking water facility in the gym but perhaps due to the great weather the supply ran out - usually if this happens we provide jugs of iced water but somehow this got overlooked and we apologise for this.
You should have had sufficient towels in your room and I apologise if you were short. For future visits please be aware that you can get additional towels from reception when you want to go swimming.
Once again thank you for all your kind comments and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Best wishes.

We decided to stay in howth recently when going to Michael buble concert at O2 and were really glad we did .Howth is a lovely little town and the deer park hotel is set in beautiful grounds .On our arrival we were a bit concerned as there were a lot of ? Spanish students in the foyer and we thought we might have been in for a bit of a noisy night but they were a credit and can honestly say we never heard them once during our stay.
The rooms and corridors are a little dated that has been mentioned before ,however if you think you will pay double in dublin and it is a very easy journey in I would def stay again,we had a beautiful view from our room and Howth is a nice 10 min walk away or you can use the transport provided breakfast was lovely with good choice we hope to be back soon

Dear guest,
Thank you for your review following your recent stay with us. I am sure you enjoyed the Michael Buble concert - we had a number of guests staying who attended and they had a great time! The students have now gone since the end of July. As far as possible they are kept in a separate area to the other guests but as you say they are extremely well behaved and they have a large number of leaders staying with them making sure they don't get up to mischief! We look forward to welcoming you back to stay when you are next in Dublin.
Kind regards.

Myself and my wife enjoyed a very pleasant evening here recently. The room was generally clean and tidy, the breakfast hearty and the views over Dublin beautiful on a sunny day.

My only criticism was the 1970s décor of the corridors and reception area. Clearly, while the rooms of the hotel are quite modern, little effort has been made to update the rest of the hotel.

Staff were polite. I get so sick of untrained spotty teenagers calling me 'mate' around the UK and Ireland, so when someone correctly calls the customer 'Sir' and 'Madam', you know this is a quality establishment.

Pay a visit to the grossly underfunded National Transport Museum if you stay at this hotel too-just down the road, it is run by volunteers and only open on weekends. It is laughable to see the wealth of Irish golfers in their 4x4s at the Deer Park Hotel and this little museum desperately short of cash.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking time to give feedback on your recent stay with us. We carry out refurbishment work during the quiet season and the corridors that have not been upgraded will be a priority when work commences. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found our staff to be professional and polite – this is very important to us.
We do hope that you will return and stay again at Deer Park.
Best wishes.

The Deer Park Hotel is situated near the fishing post of Howth. It is located in the grounds of Howth Castle and contains 3 golf courses. The restaurant is pleasant and serves a wide variety of meals in the evening. Breakfast is taken in the restaurant and is a feast in itself. The bar also serves meals and is delightful place to have a drink and enjoy a nice meal. The staff are very efficient and friendly. It would be hard to find a nicer place to stay in Ireland.

Howth offters very nice views and restaurants and has a fine beach. The DART (train) provide an excellent quick service to Dublin as does DublinBus. The fares are very reasonabe.

Room Tip: The hotel is L shaped. You can choose to look at Ireland's Eye or the city of Dublin.

Just home from a wonderful night in this hotel. Myself and my boyfriend decided to book this hotel for the night having come across a special offer. We arrived late in the evening and were greeted by a very friendly lady at the front desk. Our great first impression only got better as we explored the hotel. Our room was simple and very clean. We ate in the Bar and the food was fantastic! We arrived into the bar just before the Kitchen closed but there was no problem with us ordering food. The views from the bar and our room were beautiful and the grounds in which the hotel is situated are definitely worth having a wander through :) The staff we came across during our stay were all lovely and overall we couldn't fault anything about our short stay. The hotel is only a short drive from Howth and they provide a shuttle bus service down into the town. There is a swimming pool and gym in the hotel. Unfortunately we didn't use them ourselves but we did have a wander down and the facilities look really good. Definitely planning on heading back again soon for a longer stay :)

Room Tip: We were in a room to the front of the hotel. View from it was amazing. Only thing was the car park i...

Myself and my wife are frequent visitors to this hotel,so much so that we are on first name terms with a lot of the staff.I decided on impulse to take my wife out to Howth that day(21st July)as it holds a special place in her heart and got fantastic value on the room, only 70 euros as opposed to the usual 90.Check in was the same as always the staff as ever were delighted to see us and we spent time chatting before having a drink in the garden area overlooking the bay.We had dinner in the magnificent Aqua restaurant before deciding we would have drinks back at the hotel and watch the sunset, all going great so far until we went to bed.We were put in room 137 and the hall was littered with teenage Spanish students running up and down and literally sitting against the doors. At our room two lads were right outside our door and I had to move to them myself. Then we realised our room was sandwiched between two students rooms and the hall was constantly noisey with them running up and down and into each others rooms. We were naturally livid and complained to front desk but before we spoke to the adults in charge of the group who were stunned we were put there in the first place. We were promptly moved to a new room(203) but at this stage it was after midnight and our whole evening was destroyed. Our first wedding anniversary has left us with a sour taste in our mouth and although they moved us it should never of happened in the first place. Its unlikely we'll be back any time soon which is a shame.

I find your comments that “its unlikely that we’ll be back any time soon” very strange when I was only speaking to your wife yesterday who has booked to stay with us for Thursday August 1st.???? As you say you were promptly moved to another room and management apologized to you. We do have students staying with us up to 27th July and all I can say is that they are normally very well behaved and monitored by the teachers and leaders who are on the same corridor. The manager on duty has already spoken to the leader in charge of the students to ensure that this will not occur again.

This hotel looked very nice online when looking for a place to stay and golf but upon arrival we were horribly disappointed. The front desk staff were clueless on what the hotel had to offer and when we wanted to get our laundry done it was returned to us that evening because they said it was not handed to the front desk on time when we talked to the front desk at noon and was told that we could hand our laundry in at 2:30 and be able to have it cleaned for the following morning. The restaurants food was good but the service was terrible. We waited to be seated for ten minutes before we had to go back to the front desk to ask for them to contact the restaurant. The golf course was not in very good condition and there was garbage throughout the course but it was cheap to play, maybe that is why they don't take care of their golf course. There was also no water in the gym because the machine was broken along with the vending machine. I would not recommend this hotel to any of my friends or family.

Dear Guest
I am sorry to read that you found our front desk staff not so up to date on our facilities etc. We have some new staff who are still in training but there is generally a senior member of staff working with them so they can get assistance. It is good that you enjoyed the food in our restaurant but I do apologize for the delay in service – it should not have happened. Our golf course staff work very hard to keep the greens in good condition and are praised continuously for this from our many regular golfers. In the last few weeks they have had an extremely difficult job as there has been no rain and with the large number of golfers using the courses there is bound to be some who are not as civic minded as others and just dump there litter but staff continue to take extremely good care of the courses. We have had amazing weather over the last few weeks and hopefully it will continue - so it would be a shame not to come and stay in our beautiful location and enjoy all our facilities as so many guests have done and gone away happy.
Best wishes.
