“Great for locals and tourists, food and drink”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

We felt at home in the East Cafe. We went there three times over four days. It's not the most "Irish" place, but it's friendly (we got to know one of the bartenders) the food and drink is very good (good wine list). The food includes hours-fresh seafood to informal snacks.

“Unexpected surprise!”
Reviewed 4 September 2013 via mobile

My boyfriend and I went to Howth to explore and to eat at King Sitric's, which I had seen on Anthony Bourdain's travel show. When we arrived we were told that dinner at King Sitric's didn't open until 6:30pm. It was 4pm and we were starving. Nothing on that strip of Howth looked overly appealing so we went back to King Sitric's and decided to eat at the East Cafe.

We ordered Bloody Mary oyster shooters and the seafood chowder and vegetable bisque for starters. The food was amazing!! Even at €2.30 a piece we had 6 shooters they were THAT good! They even gave us 2 oysters rockefeller on the house! The chowder was beyond good and you could tell the ingredients were fresh. We shared the sampler platter for two and was blown away by their fresh chicken pate! It was so smooth and perfectly seasoned. Even the boyfriend loved it and he's not a pate fan! The crab and calamari were also delicious, as well as the assortment of tapenades and bruschetta.

The only disappointment was that they ran out of sticky toffee pudding so my boyfriend was unable to try the Irish version of that dessert!

Another surprise of this restaurant was that I was able to pay the bill in USD. That was a convenience!

“East Cafe - Get your act together!!!”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

We decided to have lunch here and were disappointed on too many fronts. While this is in a lovely location, beside the east pier in Howth, the overall approach and attitude needs to be sharpened up - considerably.

Despite the fact that we opted for a late lunch and the place was not busy, the service left a lot to be desired. After waiting a long while, we had to go to the counter to request menus (which were soiled and need to be replaced). Then we had to catch the attention of a passing waitress to place an order. The food was fine and if the service had been better, we would return. We had to ask for menus again. We decided that the wait had been all too long so we didn't bother with dessert. At no time did any of the waiting staff approach us without us making the effort. At no time did anyone check in with us, ask if everything was okay, if we needed anything else (even when the food was served). We had to go looking for a waitress to pay the bill. If I was the Chef, I would be pretty annoyed to know that the fine food I prepared was served with such a 'meh' attitude.

Reading the other reviews going on about how it is part of the King Sitric restaurant makes me fume. So what? East can't simply trade on another restaurant's name. Get your act together and serve your customers properly! We are paying to eat at your establishment - have the courtesy to serve us appropriately.

Will we return? That has to be decided...

We called in here for lunch. Food was really nice. Great friendly service. Food well presented and good value. Didn't feel rushed, relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

“Affordable sea food Howth Harbour”
Reviewed 9 July 2013

Much more than a 'cafe', this restaurant, in the same building as it's more pricey brother 'King Sitric', serves up a delectable selection of fish and shell-fish. At first the restaurant was reluctant to take a lunch reservation (we were eight) but did finally agree. The rock oysters were delicious and the mandatory fish and chips lightly battered and crispy. We shared the fish platter for two - 30 Euro - which I thought, at first glance, a bit pricey, but in fact it was made up of copious portions of calamari-fritti, crab claws, smoked salmon, pate and multiple crustini. We ordered an additional plate of calamari and a goat cheese salad and had plenty of food for four. Although we felt a bit cramped - eight at a table which ideally should seat only six, the service was excellent - cheery and efficient - and the overall experience very pleasant. The ambiance is less sophisticated than King Sitric and the view less spectacular, but so too is the bill! Overall a very pleasant casual dining experience. We will go again and I am happy to recommend it.
