I had the chance to tour Howth Castle with a small group of colleagues from work. We made advance reservations, and the owner of the castle, Julian, gave us a most interesting guided tour through the preserved rooms and gardens. Julian is a wealth of information, with an infectious laugh. The art, architecture, styling, and artifacts of Howth history are fascinating. The library was one of our favorite rooms, with an impressive and vast collection of titles. Julian showed us brilliant illustrations from horticultural volumes from the 1800s that will stay in my mind for a long time. The tour is unique because Julian and his family live in part of the castle, so you not only get quite a history lesson, but Julian shares stories about what its actually like to live there (the good bits and the challenging bits!). Julian and his family arranged for casual refreshments in the garden after the tour.

The family is happy to welcome you if you make an appointment for your tour in advance. I am an Executive Assistant in California and was able to arrange a lovely offsite for a small group of Executives by submitting an online request and having a few email exchanges with the family. After the tour they were able to have some wine and a private discussion in one of the gardens. And, after the Howth Castle tour the team went on to the Howth Cliff walk and then dinner at Aqua restaurant on the Howth pier.

We walked a lot (under the rain!!!) to find the castle, as the woman at the tourism information point advised us to go there and see it, Apparently it's the oldest castle in Ireland! Once we arrived, as it has been said, impossible to get inside the castle as it's private kitchens or I don't remember what. Anyway, we kept going in the hills and had a nice view.

Quite disappointed as well but we survived and had a huge 6km walk later on on the coasts.

Walked for half an hour across wet grass to get to the castle. We then discovered you can't even go into the castle or even walk around it properly. We ended up walking though woods and fields in the rain to get back to a road. Very disappointing. Could see how nice it looked from far away no need to waste time walking around getting soaked when we couldn't even go in it.

The route taken by these visitors seems to have been very unconventional. Most visitors to the castle do not hike through woods and fields but walk up the drive through the gates coming off the Howth Road just short of the harbour. It is a pleasant short walk.
The front drive is attractive and quite short. It quickly takes you to the front of the house where you can view the façade of the house, which is quite impressive.
However the house is not open to the public; it is only open to groups who book a tour in advance. Tours take about 45mins and are normally given by the owner of the house. These include all the main rooms of the house. It has been in the ownership of the same family for over 800 years and the contents are intact. There is normally a charge of €10 a head which includes tea, coffee and homemade biscuits in the cookery school at the end.
Unfortunately no one who has been on a tour has yet posted a Review on Tripadviser.

We had been recommended to visit Howth castle while we were in Ireland. Therefor4e we hired a car and drove to Howth castle where we saw the notice This is a private property and is n ever open to the public.?
We had also seen the advertisement for the Vintage Commercial Transport Museum held at Howth Castle. There was no advices however that it was only open on Saturday and Sunday (and this was Thursday)
We had been told to try the harbour and see the grey seals there (I expected not to see any after the start of the day) There were two seals who were hopefully looking at the fishing ships in case there were some scraps for them but we did not see any being fed.
We enjoyed our walk around the harbour and as there was no charge for parking this was a nice extra benefit.
