Being a Northsider and frequently in Howth we have wanted to come in here for ages but it was always busy and we usually had the car. However on this occasion we were in no hurry and just wanted to laze about on the bank holiday weekend. We had hoped to relax with a bottle of vino, some oysters, some tapas and generally spend a couple of hours having some fun.
The menu is limited but we were fine with that and we ordered oysters, calamari and fish & chips. We reckoned that if we were still hungry that we would order some more. The wine was very reasonable; well chilled, good choice and very good value.
The calamari was tasty, (just not enough) and the fish & chips were also good. (We did notice though that our portions were quite big in comparison to other orders that came after us and they tended to be more thrown on the plate rather than placed ...it was a bit messy) .
The oysters however, well we waited, waited again and waited some more. In fairness to the waiter, (he was the only 1 taking orders and the place was jammed, very bad planning for a busy bank holiday weekend and it galls me that restaurant managers/owners don't take this aspect seriously enough, this is surely a tourist trap as they obviously don't rely on repeat customers) he asked 3 times for our dozen oysters. We could see oysters, see them being sold and paid for at the other end, which was the fish sales counter but alas not for us ... after being there for over an hour and no sign of our oysters, (really, how long does it take to shuck a dozen oysters - I could have done it myself and I might add I have done in the past) and having finished our vino we decided to call it a day and leave. The waiter was so embarrassed (not his fault) but we grabbed a cappuccino and an espresso and left. (I might add that they couldn't get that right either; not a good day, not a good impression and this may go the same way as Ivan's has beside it. We won't be back.
