As stated before Currarevagh House is actually the oldest Country Guest house in Ireland and therein lies its charm. True its not like the boutique hotels in Dublin and Galway and therfore may not offer all the mod cons these places do. However this is more than offset by the welcome and the beautiful surroundings right on Lough Corrib, where free fishing via the rowing boats owned by the estate is available, and this is one of the finest trout fisheries in Europe as well !!. Being an angler myself I thought this opportunity to good to pass. The lake is stunning as is the estate and offers an exceptional tranquil base to explore the walks along the lake side or go further afield in this beautiful part of Ireland. Henry and his mother couldn't do more to make you feel welcome and we were made to feel like special guests. Our room was clean, large comfortable and spacious and was more than enough for out 2 night stay. Breakfast was fresh, afternoon tea a delight and the dinner lovely. It's an intimate place where you can keep to yourself or chat to the guests in the lounge with a drink or two after dinner. We certainly had a lovely time and would recommend.

the first thing to say is, if you want a modern hotel with all the trimmings this isn't the one for you! however, if you like a more traditional, welcoming guesthouse in an incredible setting look no further! from the moment we arrived my girlfriend and i felt very welcome and at home and when we left after two nights we wished we could have stayed longer. the food (breakfast and dinner) was incredible, room was very cosy and Henry gave us some great advice on where to go! would love to return one day.

Dear Mr Grove,
Thank you so much for posting your review concerning your stay with us here at Currarevagh. It is very thoughtful to do so and we are very glad you enjoyed your few days with us recently.
I have been remiss in the last few years in replying to reviews, and we have thankfully had a good run of them of late. We do worry that perhaps guests may arrive and find Currarevagh not for them, which is why I appreciate reviews such as this one: it is certainly true that we are not for people looking for the latest in cool boutique style! As Ireland's longest running guesthouse or hotel the house has developed a style of its own, womewhere between comfortable and gracious... modern trends are not exactly our forte! (having said that we do have good wifi - free for guests of course).
What we concentrate on are the spectacular, peaceful and private lakeshore setting we have, our food and giving visitors a genuine taste of a grand Irish Country House. It is unique and I hope an experience you will not find anywhere else.

After reading through many superlative reviews, my husband and I were expecting Currarevagh House to be a very special place, and indeed it is. We arrived on a Friday evening, weary following a fast and furious 5-day rail tour. Henry showed us to our cozy room (number 16) overlooking the gardens and lake, and I could instantly feel myself relax, knowing that for the next two days I could do as little or as much as I wanted to in these heavenly surroundings. We were blessed with amazing, sunny weather, and ultimately decided that the gorgeous Currarevagh grounds and charming little village of Oughterard weren't worth leaving during our stay (although one could easily use Currarevagh as a home base for exploring the Connemara region). We kept busy enough with woodland treks, reading on the lawn overlooking the lake, and playing with Millie, the house lab. Oh, and eating. Breakfasts were hearty and delicious, served with a warm smile by the impossibly kind June Hodgson. Afternoon tea was a treat, and Saturday night's dinner, prepared by Henry's wife who is a gourmet chef, was by far the best of our entire two week trip. The Hodgson family has elevated hospitality to an art form, and Currarevagh House is the epitome of comfort. I couldn't recommend it more highly, and envy everyone who will get to stay there before my husband and I hopefully make it back again.

We only had one night to spare so we chose very carefully and we were enthralled by Currarevagh. It is completly authentic, from the genuine warmth and friendliness of Henry and mindfull hospitality of Jane, to the wonderful food, gracious old house and gardens.
The location is outstanding with woodland walks for Shadow, beautiful views of the islands and lake. The place is a fisherman's dream, with their every need looked after. A glance at the day's catch in the Hallway proof of their patience and skill.
Boats pulled up on the shore just under the house, sun shining on the wide expanse of the lake beyond, stillness, soundlessness, I could have spent all day just looking and listening.

We stayed here the night before running the Connemarathon recently.
The hospitality was simply outstanding. The surroundings are so peaceful, the building is beautiful, Henry and his staff do everything they can to make your stay as relaxed as possible.
From the afternoon tea to the wonderful dinner and great, hot filling breakfast over looking the beautiful Lough Corrib we really could not fault a thing.
We didn't get a chance to experience Oughterard village but it looked lovely.
We met some really lovely fellow marathon runners and we all exchanged our marathon stories over afternoon tea after the race, in front of a roaring fire; bliss for tired legs!
Many thanks to everyone at the Currarevagh for making our stay so relaxed; we'll be back next year for Connemarathon 2013!!

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here on our first trip away together with my family a couple of years ago. The surroundings are truly magnificent and there is a wonderful sense of history about the place which is full of character. We received a warm welcome from the owners, which put us immediately at ease on this potentially awkward family trip!
The house feels stately and comfortable at the same time, a home from home. The rooms were spacious with modern, comfortable bathrooms. We had intended to venture out on day trips, but in fact the house and its grounds provided enough entertainment and such a relaxing, tranquil atmosphere we ended up mostly staying in situ and spending time getting to know one another. Croquet, boating on the lake and playing boardgames in the drawing room were all highlights. It was a comfortable drive to Galway for an obligatory day of sight-seeing. Dinner was another treat not to be missed.

We hope to return again later this year as a couple, and are already looking forward to it.

We stayed for two nights in August 2011, it was a wedding present from a friend. From the moment we arrived to the time we left it was perfect. The ambience of the house is of pure relaxtion. During the day we borrowed one of the rowing boats from the house and drifted in the sunshine whilst sipping some wine. The food in the evening was exceptional. Handmade truffles served with freshly brewed coffee, sat by an open fire!! All the food is beautifully presented and locally sourced. Breakfast in the morning is also fabulous and a great selection of hot and cold foods. The bedrooms are decorated in accordance to the period of the house and each eveing we entered our room the covers had been turned down and the bedside lamp lit. The hopitality, attention to detail and exceptional food makes this place a place we will come back to year after year (I have already given my husband a few hints for this year!)
