Attraction details
Owner description: Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

“Great find off the beaten path”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

We had driven by the nondescript sign on our way out to Clifden, so on the way back to Galway we decided to stop. You kind of drive down some narrow back roads to get to the parking lot and then it's a short lot to the main gate where you pay a bit to enter (about 3 euro). I believe you do receive a little leaflet/guidebook.

The tower house is huge and very interesting to walk through. The grounds have some remaining walls and watchtowers that you can walk through too.

I do wish we had been there at a time when there was a guided tour offered, because although the tower house itself had information in the form of signs, the grounds left a little more to be imagined. It was fascinating to picture what the banqueting hall would have looked like, as there is still one remaining wall and to see the river itself that would have been so important to the residents.

“Amazing castle near Galway”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

Aughnanure Castle near Galway was one of the highlights of our recent trip to Ireland. It's government owned, it's not well advertised, and presumably there are no kickbacks for the tour bus companies that take their business (and accompanying crowds) elsewhere. Aughnanure is one of the best-preserved tower "castles" with a lot of interesting history and a really beautiful setting. The guided tour was well worth the few extra Euros. Highly recommended.

“Best Castle I visited”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

Hands down, this was my favorite castle. We were driving, and got stuck in slow traffic, saw the sign for the castle and decided we might as well go, maybe the traffic would clear up. I am very happy we did. This castle was beautifully set in the woods, with a stream running right by. The grounds were absolutely beautiful, and the castle was restored well.

“A "don't miss" castle”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

My husband and I visited Aughnanure Castle a few weeks ago. It is well preserved and was easily accessible. I especially liked the carvings on the window surrounds. We both were able to take some great photos.
