“Great way to soak in culture!”

A lovely boat tour that takes you to very ancient ruins on an island- Saint Patrick's brother was buried there. Your next stop is the Asheford castle, from there a short walk to Cong, leaving you plenty of time for the quiet man tour. We loved, loved, loved the captain of the ship- full of funny stories and good humor. It was the highlight of our trip to Ireland.

“A Great Boat Trip on Lough Corrib”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

Was wondering what to do the next day when a flyer landed on my dinner table. What an excellent idea, forget the car, just take a boat trip, let fate take over. All I had to do was turn up at the peir 20 minutes before noon; dog allowed too on the "Corrib Queen". With skipper David & crew, Ralph, we set off with just a few passengers, to explore some areas of the largest inland Lough in Ireland. Lots of interesting details, laced with humour, until reaching the beautiful island of Inchagoill. A lovely short walk through woodland brought us to the 12th century Romanesque Church with amazing carved heads surrounding the doorway. Just inside is an early Byzantine carving of a cross, much puzzled over by historians. A few yards away is St. Patrick's 5th century church and a rudder shaped stone bearing the earliest known carved inscription (apart from those in Roman catacombs). A magical place.
We then set off to the pier at Cong with plenty of time to visit the village, a 6th century monastery, walk through woods, find caves & explore the grounds & gardens of the amazing Ashford Castle, an odd conglomeration of architectural styles & periods but spectacular none the less.
The whole trip was a joy with superb views of the many islands & Connemara mountains & fascinating information en route. Don't miss this venture.
