“Excellent hotel in a quaint harbour town”
Reviewed 21 August 2012

Gorgeous, modern hotel with spacious rooms and fantastic staff. We spent the first of two nights in a basic room, which was one of the best budget rooms I've stayed in. Huge bed and bathroom with bath and glass enclosed shower (I detest shower curtains). Then on our second night we upgraded to the penthouse and it was absolutely out of this world, bigger than the photos showed. The jacuzzi stand alone bath overlooking the town was beautiful at night, and lying in bed pressing the button to open the curtains on the floor to ceiling windows gave the best morning start I've had. Breakfast well cooked not greasy, polite and happy staff. One thing was the pool is quite small but the hydrotherapy areas made up for it. It'd more a pamper pool an a serious swimmers pool. Extra mention for Natasha on reception, apparently only training but if this is the standard of trainees in the sheraton group other hotels should take note because she could teach most staff a thing or too about welcoming guests! Will def be back. Also head to the Locke for dinner, great food and Peter the waiter is pure entertainment

We love this hotel. It is in the centre of Athlone town with an underground car park and lots of shops nearby. Great swimming pool. Lovely rooms with shower and bath. Air conditioning works well in rooms. Good lifts. Liked all the fresh fruit at breakfast.
Unfortunately the wifi was not nearly as good as in previous years. It is free for an hour which you can renew as often as you like. However this is really annoying as you have to put in your codes every hour. And downloading a newspaper onto my Ipad was really slow.
It was very hot in the hotel corridors and lifts although the weather was not that warm. The cleaning lady allotted to our room this year never left us coffee etc. and sometimes forgot towels etc. However when we rang reception in the evening there was no problem and they provided us with a good service.
Great hotel but please make the use of wifi easier. Putting in the password etc. once a day should be enough.

Stayed on a thur and fri night. Great location, parking free on site, shopping only a lift away good staff! Just walking into the hotel from the car park I knew it was going to be nice. Loved the whole hotel looks great, room was spotless and had everything, bar a view but got over this! Every room can't have a great view! Leasuer centre is great pool can be very busy tho. It has one of the best gyms iv seen in a hotel!
I gave the service a 3 because the bar on the thur night was a let down. We went for food and the service was pritty bad I'm sorry to say. Had to go to the bar for everything, menu, drinks, to order... I mean they seem to have plenty of staff but just no bit of a bar or floor plan and it wasn't that busy dirty tables messy bar it just put us off eating or having drinks in the bar again. The burger in the bar was also very tasteless was like it had nothing through it for a bit of flavour! You have a super hotel other wise and would stay with you again!

Just back from a recent stay in this hotel. On arrival we were dealt with efficently by the desk staff, we had upgraded to a club room. We were shown to our room and were disappointed, the view was of the roofs of the lower ground of the hotel and it was a small claustrophobic room and you could not open the windows, we contacted reception and were offered a suite for an extra 80 euro per night but would lose our breakfast and club room extras. We declined this offer, they contacted us again and reduced the rate to 60 euros per night. Having paid 296 euro already, I felt this was exhorbitant especially when they were taking away the breakfast as well so I declined, we were contacted again and offered a deluxe room at 20euro extra per night and allowing us our previous club and breakfast so we accepted this offer. The room was virtually the same as the one we had vacated but had great views and we could open the windows which was great as the hotel is very warm. We woke the following morning to a 2.5 litre mayonaise bucket outside our bedroom door as the skylight in the hallway was leaking, this bucket did not move from this position for the whole weekend, I eventually moved it myself as it was an obstruction every time we went in and out of our room. The breakfast was good but the hot buffet was cool both mornings. We had gone to Athlone for a relaxing romantic break, I would not recommend the Sheraton for this, the hotel bar was always quite loud and when we used the club lounge facility which we had upgraded to it was most disappointing, it was the most depressing room I have ever entered in a hotel. It was gloomy and felt dirty, we did not stay long. Athlone itself was lovely and the people are so very friendly and really make you feel at home. Would not stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Do not select the club option

Myself my wife and 2 yr. old son stayed here early August. The hotel is very easy to find it’s well signposted and with free underground parking (separate section from the shopping centre) makes it ideal as you don’t get wet getting to and from your car. (Typical Irish summer).
It is also attached to a very large shopping centre which is very handy. The hotel itself is spotless everywhere. The room was a good size (room 327) with a lovely bathroom and Fantastic shower. My only tiny issue with the room were the pillows they were a little thin especially as the bed was massive and so very comfortable.
I would honestly say the best part of my stay at this hotel was the staff they really could not have been nicer from check in to check out we were always afforded courtesy and made feel very welcome.
For a four star hotel it ticks all the boxes clean, comfortable, Centrally located, Free parking, Free WIFI and very nice staff. Would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

This is a large, modern, busy hotel built over the Athlone Town Centre shopping centre. It is on Gleeson street, close to the railway and bus stations. There is a car park under the SC. Parking is free for hotel guests, in a dedicated section, close to a lift direct to the hotel.

The reception staff were very nice, professional and helpful.

Some rooms are upstairs, but rooms in the 400s are in a separate tower, requiring two lifts. The higher in the tower, the better the views of the town and the Shannon river.

We paid 150 per night for 2 nights, got the third free, so 100 pn B&B, for a larger room in the tower. The bathroom was very impressive, probably the largest hotel bathroom I've ever seen. The bed was 6ft wide. The room was well appointed, with AC, plenty of storage and space overall.

The breakfast was good, with homemade breads, several types of fruits, cooked breakfast (not greasy) with a coffee machine available.

My only issue is with the design of the tower. To get to the fifth level, it required a lift from the lobby, then a walk to the tower, then a corridor, then another lift. However, this is only a minor issue, and not something to do with the operation or management of the hotel.

The swimming pool was very good.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Higher in the tower (high 400s) have better views, but at the expense of having to take two lifts to...
