“Interesting for its history”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

Sean's Bar in Athlone is recognized as the oldest pub in Ireland, and some say in Europe, being in continuous operation since 900 AD. The decor is definitely not that old, but is not the sterile stone and chrome atmosphere of a modern bar. Quite an interesting place to put down a pint or two. Worth the stop, just to say you had a wee bit of brew in the oldest pub.

“Yet another "oldest pub in Ireland"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014 via mobile

There are literally dozens of pubs claiming to be "the oldest pub" all over Ireland including Sean's Bar, Athlone.....whether or not it is the oldest it doesn't really matter as it's a very nice traditional pub with a great atmosphere; traditional music 7 nights per week & great craic at all times.

There is a large outside area where there's a large flat screen TV & where smoking is permitted.

In this very traditional pub there is no TV in the main bar but there is music galore from the traditional musicians & you can join in the singing if you're so inclined.

Nice atmosphere; friendly staff; & just what you'd hope for in a traditional Irish pub....

“must see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

Kind of crazy being in a pub that was established in 900 AD. The pub itself is like many others; but, it is great thing to do. Track down the Book of World's Records cert.

“Time for a glass of guinness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

We went into Athlone by taxi to visit Sean's bar and it was a very nice bar to watch the world go by, in and out of the place. There was sawdust on the floor and a lovely fire. And the guinness went down a treat, so well we had another round! As we were staying at the Hodson Bay Hotel, we were able to catch the Viking Cruise boat back and although we were only on board 35 minutes, the commentary was very informative. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.

“Crowded, No Live Music On Patio”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

We stopped by for a drink around 9 and it was too crowded to sit or stand inside so we went out to the patio. While it was pleasant out there - heaters, tables, chairs - the live music could only be hear inside so we missed out on that part of the experience, listening instead to pop music.
