“Good for a fun weekend”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

A group of us headed away for a fun weekend, and like many others at this hotel we were in a very central hotel ideal for anyone partaking in the bar scene in Athlone. Its a 3 star hotel with a night club, big bar/carvery and decent pub grub. Breakfast was a bit messy on one of the mornings with no staff in the restaurant and dirty tables everywhere, Second morning was better. The lobby and entrance area from the carpark is a bit tired and is not in keeping with the very nice bedrooms. Lorna at the Front Desk was very nice to us during our stay,
There is Room for improvement but I think for a few euros more per night, one can have a 4 star experience at the Sheraton,

Room Tip: Gertie Brownes a great spot for a few drinks with friends

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay in the Prince of Wales.

Our apologies in relation to breakfast, our standard is normally a lot higher, unfortunately we had an off day on the Saturday. Everyone just came down at the same time for breakfast and we were also a little short staffed.

We power hose the front of the hotel daily but with the design of the marble it is nearly impossible to keep clean with passing traffic etc. We are having difficulty keeping our marble floor in reception up to the standard. We have an outside cleaning company that come in quarterly to treat if but we are now looking at buying our own machine that we can buff it and polish it fortnightly.

Again thank you for your comments we do take all on board and try to action any improvements from same.

Looking forward to welcoming you back to Athlone and the Prince of Wales in the future.

With Best Regards,

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Yvonne and all the staff at The Prince of Wales for going above and beyond to help our hen group on Saturday. Our dance teacher from a certain well known company specialising in hen parties never showed up for our Bollywood lesson despite full confirmation of the booking. We were all completely aware that this matter had absolutely nothing to do with the hotel apart from it being the designated venue for the dance class and we are so grateful to Yvonne and all the staff from Sat 4th Feb for all their help.

Everyone had gone to such effort and expense dressing up Bollywood style that it could have been a complete disaster and disappointment but the hotel staff completely saved the day!
Within minutes they sourced a fantastic Salsa Dance teacher for us (Anthony) and this along with the complimentary round of apple shots they really did make our day and lifted all our spirits back up!
We thoroughly enjoyed the hour and a half Salsa class, Anthony was just brilliant and almost half the price of the other company.
Upon the hotels recommendation we decided to go to their nightclub Karma after our meal and they couldn’t have looked after us better. We had such a brilliant night with VIP entry and our own private area!
Everyone spoke so highly of the hotel and the staff, so on behalf of myself (the hen), and the other 13 girls we are so grateful to you.

We will all be highly recommending The Prince of Wales to all our friends going forward!

Many Thanks
N

I went to a hen at the Prince of Wales recently and found the experience more than satisfying, from the great food to the cocktail making lessons we were given!!! The food that evening was gorgeous and the staff were friendly and very helpful. The room i stayed in was very spacious and had everything that i needed. The night itself was brilliant,we had a group of twenty and had the best laugh ever,we then went to Karma nightclub which is in the hotel too, which had brilliant music and a great atmosphere. All agreed that the night was a success and would recommend the hotel for anyone to stay in!

Just back from a stay with friends in Prince of Wales. From the reception staff to the Bistro lady, the breakfast staff to the refreshing hands-on style of management....all was excellent for us.
Whatever ye are doing, keep at it!! It was really business being carried on at it's best.
I will be back as will my colleagues.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet, interior room, ask for numbers 101 upwards. They are in a lovely quiet corridor...

Myself and my husband had a really lovely weekend staying at this hotel. The receptionsit was friendly, welcoming and very helpful. Our room was upgraded and we went got to the room there was a bottle of wne chilling in a bucket of ice for us. Also the front desk phoned to check our room was ok which was a nice touch. We didnt eat in the bar but had a few drinks the bar staff pleasant. Breakfast was yummy, freshly cooked and a wide choice. I couldnt fault the hotel - well done to all the staff!

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your lovely review of the Prince of Wales Hotel.

I remember you booking I think it was your husbands birthday so we sent a bottle up to the room as a good will gesture.

I am delighted you enjoyed your breakfast as we feel a freshly cooked breakfast is so important even if sometimes a bit slower than a buffet.

We are looking forward to welcoming you back to the Prince of Wales and Athlone on your next trip.

Hotel is lovely, bar great, bar food great. Rooms lovely, not huge but perfect for a short stay. Only complaint is that they don't have soya milk available. No excuse for that, especially as there's a shop across the road!!
Staff were generally helpful and friendly, and the hotel is so central that it makes visiting athlone easy!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

I was delighted to see that you enjoyed your recent stay in the Prince of Wales. My apologies for not having soya milk in stock. Amanda did try Centra across the road but they unfortunately had none in stock either. We might add an extra column on our booking form for any dietary requests so that this does not arise again.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Prince of Wales in the near future.

went to this hotel for a hen night it was just OK defo wouldn't go back to the hotel itself! The staff were lovely but we went for an evening meal and it was very dry and bland even the desert was like a brick ask them to heat it up and it came out the same!! We got free into the night club but we had to take all our hen stuff off by which the bouncers were a bit ignorant about also we were told we would be in the VIP part that defo was not the case and also there was another hen party there that got in with there feather bows to which i questioned the bouncers and again they were very rude about. Also the breakfast in the morning was yuck pure grease we couldn't get toast because one of the staff said there toaster was broke so she came out wit warm bread! .....so if your thinking about having your hen party here defo dont there are much better hotels in Athlone!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review as it is only through guest feedback positive or negative that we can improve.I was very very disappointed to rad your comments as we would be renowned for our hen and stag partys and have recently even been chosen to be on a hen party documentary on tv3 as we do them so well.I would be very interested in talking to you directly regarding some of your comments. We have 2 industrial toasters in our kitchen so i cannot understand why you were told our toaster was out of order. Also we have extremely positive comments regarding our freshly cooked breakfast .We do have a policy of no hen attire in our night club which is stated on our booking form so I was surprised to hear there was another hen party on the night with hen attire on.I apologize if you found the door staff rude so I would like to carry out a thorough investigation. In order for me to fully investigate your comments I would need you to contact me at manager@theprinceofwales.ie to get the date of your stay. Again I apologize that we did not live up to our normally very high standards which can be seen by the reviews on tripadvisor and other online review sites.
Looking forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Regards
Padraic Whelan
