Great hotel EXCEPT they have a night-club that operates on the weekends... and a large concrete square outside the hotel lobby... after midnight drunks and revelers pour out of the nightclub and have NO CONCERN about people trying to sleep!!!

They had a good breakfast in the morning, but it doesn't compensate for a disrupted night of trying to sleep. Someone should re-think their business plan. Do they want to be a hotel-restaurant or a nightclub.

Room Tip: DON'T stay on the front side of the hotel if its the weekend!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your recent review, I was delighted with your impression of the hotel but sincerely apologize for the noise levels you experienced from the plaza out the front of the hotel. We do have a night club in the basement of the hotel and thankfully we never receive noise complaints from the music from the club directly. It can be noisy out the front on the main street when all the bars and local clubs including our own club empty at closing time, we have fitted a second sound proofed window on all our rooms facing the main street or the plaza to combat this noise but unfortunately it was not sufficent for your stay. If you are passing through athlone again please contact me directly so I can ensure that you are in the back of the hotel and upgraded. Again My apologies for your bad nights sleep.
Kind Regards
padraic whelan

Overall very comfortable and enjoyable stay except for the nightclub and revelling guests returning to rooms and banging doors at all hours . Do not come here thurs-sat if you want a good nights sleep. If you like nightclubs however , it seems to be the place to go in Athlone! DJs at the weekend and cheap cocktails in the bar.
Also the ordinary guest gets a complimentary tea or coffee in the bar on check-in, which is nice! Rooms would be complete with proper A/C and flat screen tv. Unfortunately we were just given a fan on a stand instead of A/C !!!

We just walked in and worked out a price with them. €70 for very flash room with the nicest shower we've ever had! Good wifi and breakfast was excellent. Service was good too. Lovely staff at reception and breakfast. I can't fault them.

I stayed in the prince of Wales hotel for two nights on the 17th and 18th of July 2013. I found it to be a lovely hotel with very friendly staff. The room was very spacious with air conditioning which was very welcome as it was very hot outside. The bathroom area was very clean and well decorated with great shower facilities. We had a meal in the bar on our first evening which was very well presented and tasted great too.

Stayed at the prince of Wales hotel for just one night. We requested a quiet room and we got one. Room quite spacious. Loved the shower. A/c worked well which was great as we are having a heat wave. Had a snack in the bar at a very reasonable price. Great location. Would stay again.

we chose Athlone as a mid point, traveling from Dublin to Galway, and needed a place to stay. looked over choices on tripadvisor, and found The Prince of Wales. we thought the price was reasonable, and the location, mid town, ideal, so we booked it. on arrival our room was ready, we settled in and were happy to note there was a good quality of air conditioning, considering that Ireland was enjoying an unusually warm and dry few weeks. the bathroom was clean, but we had not requested a nonsmoking room, and i thought the room smelled like smokers had used it often. the amenities in the bath were very nice. the beds were three twins, one was more of a cot than an actual bed. we went out to explore a bit of the town, including historic Athlone Castle, and the receptionist offered us discount coupons for the admission there.
we ended up eating dinner in the pup, excellent fish and chips, and my one and only bannoffee pie, which i loved! food and service in the pub was excellent.
breakfast in the morning was in a dining room on the opposite side of the reception area. we were offered tea or coffee, a cold buffet was set up with juices, fruit and yougurt, along with cold cereals, scones and pastries. a young waitress brought us tea and toast, and took orders for cooked eggs and sausages or porridge. it was all very good, no complaints here!
i think this is an ideal location, free parking in back. my brother stayed elsewhere in athlone later in the week and had no AC on a very hot day of traveling.
