Booked rooms (confirmed reservation) in the new part of the hotel 6 weeks before our visit. Got an email a few days before arrival to ask me to confirm booking. Got a call 2 days before arrival to say the hotel was over booked and we'd been moved to the Sheraton "sister hotel" in the city centre. Told them we booked the Hodson Bay as that is where we wanted to stay. Got another call on the day of arrival to say they had fitted us into the hotel but that we'd have to stay in the old part of the hotel for the first night and then they would move us to the new part of the hotel for the rest of our stay. On arrival we were told that we couldn't stay in the new part of the hotel at all as the rule was "no children". Pointed out the "child" they were referring to was my 18 year old son who is 6 feet tall, has a beard and is an international athlete! (receptionist was clearly trying to free up rooms in the new part of the hotel?). Reluctantly they agreed we had no "children" in the party. Only had small smoking rooms (very smelly) for our first night.despite the fact that we'd booked non smoking rooms :-(

Also beware of wedding parties as they allow fireworks at midnight right outside the hotel rooms - very very loud and unwelcome as we were there to compete in the European Triathlon Championships which started very early the next morning!

New part of the hotel, spa and location are superb. Restaurant a bit overwhelemed at breakfast and ran out of bread.

Would certainly stay there again but would worry about over booking and getting bumped from the reserved rooms at short notice into not so nice rooms in the hotel or, even worse, getting moved to another hotel in the town centre to make room for wedding guests!

Dear Guest

We are aware you had many positive experiences during your stay with us, but it is unfortunate there were some regrettable issues. It is correct that our Retreat/Spa rooms do not accommodate children, but there should have been no issue with your 18 year old son staying in these rooms. We were fortunate to have a high level of business on the weekend you stayed with us due to the European Triathlon Championships. We did in fact have to move some guests to the Sheraton Hotel, this is one of our sister hotels and of an extremelly high standard. It is unfortunate that you were distrubed by the fire works display, this had been booked by the wedding party and is not a nornal occurrence at the hotel. I was delighted to read that you would return to the hotel and should this occur I would be grateful if you make us aware, so I could make the necessary arrangements to ensure your stay is a most enjoyable one.

Yours sincerely

Hotel itself is beautiful, in a lovely location but its a 10 min drive into the city centre. Room was very clean but small. Kids club was excellent, kids were gone from 10 -1 pm, and 6 - 11 pm everyday, they were given all their meals and it was well supervised, only drawback for us was we couldn't leave hotel while they were in kids club and it was in such a remote location we were quite bored. Pool was great, very clean. I highly recommend eating in the restaurant, food was gorgeous but breakfast was very poor. In the bar there was a lovely little cafe, food was nice. Overall a very pleasant stay.

we were a party of 8 including 2 small children. the hotel sorted out rooms at very short notice having booked them only that morning and at a good rate . the rooms were near to each other which was a great bonus and we enjoyed the food at breakfast, the swimming pools and gym. the pools are lovely for children and adults and the massage facility in the pools was superb. the gym users had good impressions of the facilities and
the staff were all friendly and helpful and we were impressed by the reception staff who took the booking and allowed use of the computer and printer to search for flights home. the pool reception staff were also very helpful and loaned equipment and hats.
the beds were easily the most comfortable i have ever had in an hotel so all in all a very relaxing stay in what could otherwise have been very trying circumstances.

Having stayed in a Retreat Suite for two nights we emerged completely relaxed and renewed.

We started our weekend with a Double Decadence Spa treatment and were treated like royalty. We started with 40mins in the Thermal Spa, where we were fortunate enough to have the entire treatment area to ourselves to enjoy the Ice Rain and Tropical Rain showers and the sauna's. We were then taken upstairs to our treatment suite where we enjoyed a Chocolate foot scrub prior to a 25mins private jacuzzi complete with Champagne, Strawberries and melted Chocolate. We finished the treatment off with a Full Body Hot Stone Massage. The staff then guided us to the Relaxation room where we enjoyed complementary, fruits, water and individual iPod's to complete the experience.

When we decided to book the suite, many of the appealing features included the floor to ceiling windows, the jacuzzi in the bathroom, and the child free policy in the Retreat part of the hotel. We awoke every morning to a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake. The jacuzzi was built for two and offered that little bit of extra relaxation. Plus there wasn't a child's voice to be heard until we reached the main part of the hotel.

Breakfast every morning was wonderful with all the trimmings you can expect, room service from L'Escale was delicious as was dinner in the restaurant the following night.
All in all the only downside to the weekend was having to leave and the beer, which was weak and flat. Both the Heineken and the Coors Light were not up to scratch. I can not complement the staff enough in their manner and helpfulness over the whole weekend. They are a credit to the management team.

We completely enjoyed our experience in the Hodson Bay and have already planned a return trip in September. It was the perfect peaceful romantic weekend we wanted.

We stayed for a family birthday and get together and as part of the 2 nights b&b 1 dinner offer we booked the restaurant for the whole family. I just feel that charging €42 for teenagers and €26 for children is a little too much in todays climate. It would turn me off going back with children and as there was 4 teenagers and 4 children eating with us it was a huge amount of money to pay, we would pay that for 8 adults in numerous restaurants throughout Ireland

My Mum, sister and I went to stay in the Hodson Bay Hotel last week to celebrate my mums birthday. It was our second time to the hotel and my mum now swears it is her favourate hotel in Ireland.
We arrived and checked in and were so happy to find out we got a room in the retreat section of the hotel " What Bliss" . The rooms are fantastic, nice clean bathroom with a powerfull shower, great views and the most comfy pillows I have ever slept on. As soon as we settled in we went straight ot the Spa and Leisure complex. My mum who is not a great swimmer loves the pool in this hotel as it caters for all and has lots of different sections to relax in, hot tub, Hydro pool, Suana and steam room. We could not thank the leisure team enough. They really were so helpfull especially our pilates instructor
(Pilates is just one of the many free classes they offer to their guests)
then we headed to the spa and Eimear the manager honestly gave us the best customer service we have experienced in a long time. The thermal suite was nice but I felt was lacking in atmosphere a little. Some relaxing music would work wonders in this area. A small thing really but important to me. Try the plunge bucket you will be shocked!!!!
The first morning we got a huge breakfast in bed that was fab and their coffee is excellent. The second morning we went to the breakfast room and enjoyed an all you can eat buffett of fresh fruit, pastries, juices and a good hearty full Irish :-)
We ate dinner in the restaurant on one of the nights. They just launched their new dinner menu and the three of us were so suprised with the variety on the menu. My sister is a very plain eater so mum and I could not belive she ate prawns for starters. Credit to the chef. Really you must eat in this restaurant.
On the second day we tried some of their midweek activites, we went to the spa talk which was very imformative and gave us lots of facial tips, then we went the the wine tasting which I have to say Deirdre our host was so lovely and she really gave us all personal attention when explaining her wines it was really fantastic.
We did not stay in the bar much as we felt it was a little traditional for our likeing but it was packed with guests each day. They have a lovely beer garden outside which is great to chill out looking over the lake.
Over all we really enjoyed our stay in the Hodson Bay Hotel and we will be back. Thanks so much to all the team.

i just wanted to review the spa in the Hotel-which i have to say is absolutely fantastic. The staff are all v nice and friendly and the treatments were excellent.
We used the Thermal suite for an hour 1st , it was lovely and relaxing & spotless, then we got our treaments-facial/massages, all 3 of us were so happy with our thearpists.
I have to say i have been to many spas around Ireland and i will definitely be returning here. After the treatments you are brought into the relaxation lounge over looking the lake, each bed is opearted by remote control so its pure comfort, you are given a hot drink and there is a wide variety of fresh fruit for free. Each bed has an ipod dock so the highlight for me was sitting back-admiring the view of the lake ,reading the magazines and feeling utterly pampered and stress free- certainely the way you should feel after a spa...well done i will be back! :-)
