We have just returned from a great few days in ireland two of which we spent at Wineport Lodge. Being regular day to day visitors to the Phoenicia Hotel (we live in Malta) we told one of the staff there that we were thinking of visiting Ireland for the first time and the advised us to visit one of their sister hotels. As we have never been dissapointed when in the Phoenicia we had a look and decided to book.

It was really easy to find (we hired a car) as they have roads much better than we have in Malta and we arrived at what i can only discribe as a lovely oasis in the heart of ireland. the setting, the food, the service... faultless! the staff were all great and food magnificant, in fact we enjoyed our first dinner so much, we ate in again the second night! to wake up with the water lapping below your bedroom balcony it so relaxing.

Thank you all at Wineport for making our first visit to Ireland so memorable!

First Impressions were very positive. Very friendly staff from the outset.
Our room was modern and pleasant. We have a suite with a wonderful view of the lake.
We arrived on a Bank Holiday and the lunchtime non-resident crowds in the bar area meant that we had to have our lunch at the bar itself. I was less than impressed at that.

Our first dining experience was average. Fish cakes were disgusting. Dry, hard and salty. Fillet was done to perfection. My fish main was nice. We had a very nice wine.
I noticed however that the glassware was quite dirty.

We have a very quiet nights sleep with the sound of the lake sending us off to sleep.

Breakfast in bed is a free option which is nice and it was bang on time. Tasty too if a little on the small side. The menu states eggs plural but you get only one. They also forgot my coffee.

My partner enjoyed 2 hours of treatments and was happy with them. However she has had much better elsewhere. I also had 1 treatment and was a little taken aback when I was informed by the therapist of what I was getting rather than being asked.

We chose to laze the day away in bed with the ‘do not disturb’ light illuminated on the door however this didn’t stop housekeeping from knocking and entering.

Our lazy day came to an abrupt end with the arrival of new guests next door who decided to use the Sonos kit to its full extent. That lack of neighbours also explained our previous night’s uninterrupted rest. The rooms are not very well insulated for noise.

Our next dining experience was not so pleasant. Tartar to start was excellent. I opted for a t bone cooked blue. My partners main lamb came out overcooked while my steak came out minutes later also very overcooked. It was almost well done. I handed it back and over 10 minutes later while my partner ate alone, my steak came out overcooked again with the same now limp side order still on the plate. I returned it and gave up. We were given 1 drink on the house and informed that the steak would be removed from the bill.

At well over 1000 E for 2 nights I think it is extremely overpriced. Interesting to read in an earlier review that the head chef has left. That would explain some of the issues but not all of them.

My partner and i got a lucky break last week when we decided to use our wedding gift from friends in the form of a voucher from the Wineport lodge in Athlone ,we arrived early on a sunny friday afternoon to see a wooden clad building nestled among trees with a view of the lough to die for! we sauntered along to where we were greeted by very friendly reception staff and were shown to our room as it was ready at two clock, very prompt! when entering the room we were delighted to see feather duvets and pillows and an amazing view to the lough as with all the room in the lodge ,it was the little touches like home made cookies fresh milk and filtered coffee and a half bottle of complimentary wine which we took no time at all getting stuck into that made the first hour for us unique!! we booked ourselves in for dinner at nine pm as we were told that the sunset was highly recommended, it didn't disappoint!OMG, very romantic!
We were given the menus by a very nice lady who pointed out what things were popular and tasty, we took her advice and went with the lamb and the dory , amazing and so so tasty, the waiting staff were so friendly and could not do enough to help, we had ordered a bottle of the River garden red and at 25 euro we found it really good value too! The chef and his team are indeed a great asset to have as the meal did not disappoint! after dinner we decided to have a drink in the lounge nice spot wooden floors and with very relaxed music and mood lighting and the couches that swallow you up! we indeed found it hard to make a move back to the room, but we did and i must say had the best nights sleep in a long time, breakfast in your room the next morning at no extra charge, with the daily paper was also a great touch, we then got up and sadly checked out as we were only there for one night ,and as we walked back to the car we both said to each other, we will definitely be back!!

Myself and 2 girlfriends stayed at the Wineport the weekend of the 23rd April and had a very pleasant weekend. The setting is beautiful, the room was large, the free bottles of water and newpapers are a nice touch. Service was great generally although it was hard to tell when the room had been refreshed as the beds weren't made properly. The hot tub on the roof was lovely. We all had massages and facials and we each found them fantastic. We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday night and found the food to be excellent. Breakfast on both morning was very good. I would love to come back for a romantic weekend with my husband. Once complaint is that their prices for lunches and tea/coffee is way too expensive, €4 for a cup of coffee is ridiculous!

Went to Wineport for a romantic weekend break. Having heard so much about this hotel, we were very disappointed on our arrival. It's very different to what we expected. The room was quite small & basic & the facilities are very limited. The one thing I can say is the view is lovely. Other than that, I wouldn't return to Wineport for another visit.
