I have no idea why this is on here, but it isnt a restaurant and its busy and overcrowded. i hate it
personally, you spend more time in the car trying to get to places than you do in the shops buying stuff!

Athlone is centrally located and is a great town to use as a base. Dublin is about one hour away, and Galway is less than one hour away. There are numerous restaurants and shops including two different shopping centers. If the weather is nice, you can take a cruise down the River Shannon. Clonmacnoise, an old monastic site, is about twenty minutes away and is also worth a visit.

Athlone surprised me by its size. It is easily accessed by train or by bus. It has lots of shops and two large shopping centres. The staff in any of the shops I went into were extremely helpful and obliging. There are several boat trips on offer. We travelled on the Viking Boat and found the commentary very informative and friendly. The trip also offers a short stop at the Hodson Bay Hotel with the option to return at a later time. Children seemed to enjoy this trip as much as the adults, although I would advise to wrap up well as it can get quite cold on board. Tea and coffee is offered free, along with the option to purchase soft drinks, beer. The area is well catered for with restaurants of all kinds and tastes, as well as lots of take away establishments. Plenty of lovely walks alongside the boats and barges moored along the river. The railway station and the bus station are adjacent to each other. Allow good time to purchase your tickets though as the staff have a lot of enquiries to deal with and trains travelling towards Dublin are boarded on Platform 2 - down and up a lot of stairs or by using the "slow" lift.
Travel, however, is quite straightforward. Athlone is a very nice place to visit.
