Kids were so excited visiting Santa here. The whole place was decorated lovely. They had fake snow which was great. Santa was great and queues wasn't bad. I would recommend going there when dark cause all lights look lovely. Really worth a visit. Good effort from all staff.

We received a lovely warm welcome at reception and were given little bags of oats and barley for feeding the animals - from that point we knew we were in for a treat!! We spent ages talking to Rio the macaw parrot. He was hilarious. The goats, donkey and llamas ate nicely but the cheeky emu pecked at my husbands hand haha. Inside the shed was our favourite part - we fell in love with the 2 jack russell puppies. We could have cuddled them for hours!! Scruff the pot bellied pig was adorable and loved a good belly rub! We finished our trip off with a yummy hot chocolate and coffee with carrot cake and cookie. Awesome day out for all ages :)

Went on the last day of the Halloween opening for the first time and I was a bit disappointed. Firstly it was expensive- €24 for 2 adults and an under 2! The animals are in pens on either side of a walkway and in a barn at the end of the area- I had expected more animals and that it might take longer to get through them (and it probably would if you were with a 5 or 6 year old but our 2 year old was more interested in getting to the end!). The animals are friendly and I liked the fact you could feed them. The covered sand pit at the end was great fun with loads of barrows, buckets, diggers etc. The playground is fine but nothing special. Lots of room but I could imagine the swings, slides etc. could get really busy during busy times. I had really wanted to like this place but I won't be rushing back- it just isn't great value for money unfortunately :(

We visited this place in Oct 2013, during a wedding in Athlone. It as a positive experience for our family at 8 euros per person and child, it is over priced.

the concept is good, but still needs to be developed more. thinking about other pet farms in Ireland which we have visited the owners of glendeer should study Kia Ora Mini Farm in County Wexford.

Glendeer Pet Farm gave our 5yo more hands-on fun than any other place we've visited in Ireland this summer. We knew it had that potential the moment we parked outside the entrance because more than 40% of the cars were estate wagons, SUVs, mini-vans or family cars with playthings inside. It's not cheap getting inside and the counter staff doesn't take plastic. However, we got several bags of feed with the price of admission along with cautionary tales about holding tight to the paper sacks if we let the Edward the Emu poke his head inside. We forgot the advice when we met him.

There's a lot of loving care evident around the Glendeer Pet Farm. In the summer, local teens help guests hold rabbits and puppies. That fascinated our five year old daughter and she returned several times for the experience. Our two year old watched from a distance and he gathered the courage to touch the noses of the goats several times during our two-hour stay.

Just beyond the initial set of fenced enclosures sits two kinds of playgrounds. Our kids spent more time on the swings and the zip line outside but the inside play centre got the attention of our youngest. He didn't have the courage to use all the slides, however.

There are many clues that the people behind Glendeer know how to fashion a nice family experience. Besides the obvious mandate of showcasing animals in comfortable and clean surroundings, the staff have created outdoor fixtures that are one part ingenious and one part hand-fashioned. Several metal fixtures on the playground are true welding creations. The rock wall on the highest part of the grounds is an authentic piece of the 17th century Irish landscape. And the natural growth over the top of the pheasants is a lovely example of sustainable rural architecture designed to enhance a natural habitat.

We aren't in the Athlone area very often but have decided to stop there several times a year while traveling to the West, now that we know the kids want to remember their best hands-on fun from the summer of 2013.
