“Totally Unique!”
Reviewed 10 March 2008

Just returned from a fun one night stay at the Bastion B&B. This B&B, on the "Left Bank" of Athlone, provided my daughter and myself a charming experience. The buiding is a maze of winding stairs, diverse textures, woods, glass blocks, colored tiles, alcoves, fresh clean bedrooms and a plant filled kitchen/dining. We booked the most awesome room - with one double bed located under two skylights and an angled, beamed roof, with the twin bed located in a loft, with small balcony outside. Bed linens were crisp and comfy. The room was a wee bit chilly upon arrival but several space heaters soon made it warm and cozy. Bath was very funky, with a Gaudiesque tile design above the sink. Global artifacts, artwork and plants decorate all the walls at the Bastion, and the neighborhood is artsy and ecclectic as well.
Vinny, one of the owners, met us and gave us some local info - we took his recommendation to eat at Le Chateau-right down the street-excellent food, beautiful decor in a renovated church.
Vinny's brother, the co-owner, is currently on a Buddhist retreat in France, so Jacqueline, a lovely lady, is helping run the place. She had coordinated our visit to Clonmacnoise-our main purpose in coming to Athlone- but there was a last minute glitch and the driver was unable to take us ---so she graciously drove us out there. This entailed getting someone to cover for her at the B&B, and waiting for us while we walked around Clonmacnoise...we appreciated that Vinny and Jacqueline were so accomodating of their guests. They both had been just as friendly and helpful in all of my email communications with them prior to our arrival. It was a delight to meet such interesting people and truly a unique experience to stay at the Bastion.

The Bastion is a very cool B&B in a superb location in Athlone. One of the owners, Vinny McCay, greeted us upon arrival, showed us our ensuite room, and immediately suggested retaurants and some things to do in and near Athlone. The breakfast each morning was a selection of cereals, yogurts, juices, farmhouse cheeses, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, etc. - a very welcome break from the heavy "Ulster fry" (a.k.a. full Irish breakfast) that we had enjoyed on most mornings up to that point!

This B&B is a bit bohemian, but in a friendly, comfortable, and casual way. My mother (a conservative lady in her 70's who enjoys creature comforts) really enjoyed it, and so did I. The rooms are simple but welcoming, and the beds/linens were superb. Although our room was ensuite, not all of them are, so ask about that if you make a booking.

  • Liked — the breakfast and the warm welcome
  • Disliked — having to leave!

This place is perfect for location. Next door there is a small café that is locally owned but reminded me of a Panera bread or other type soup and sandwich place. The B&B is so cool it has stairs that reminds me of something out of Scooby Doo. Very cool building. We stayed up top in an Attic Room. The bed was good, sheets clean and shower was HOT. ( no tv ) I asked the nice lady that was working about WIFI internet and she gladly gave me the WEP code to get me on the FREE internet with my laptop. She was friendly and polite. As far as Athlone you are in the heart of it just down the hill from a castle. There are pubs and restaurants in 2 min. walking distance. We at Italian down the road and it was some of the best food we had in Ireland. The house is nice and reminded me more of a INN then a typical B&B. Parking is around the corner because there isn’t any on the street.( a few min. walk to park nothing far..dumped the bags with the hazzards on and then went & parked.) It cost me 2 euro to park for 24 hours. The place got the wife’s approval so I would recommend. There is traffic outside on the Road and we had some noisy neighbors … but they shut up around 11.pm … It is worth the stay because of the location alone. What a perfect location. Also the house is kind of hippie –ish. Lots of Buddha heads cool funky paintings, pictures, just cool funky stuff and live plants all over. The most unique place we stayed at in all of Ireland. A perfect spot to stop for the night on our way to Dublin. You will be taking pictures of the place for your memory books. Its just NEAT !! Also I thought the place was very safe and secure. Good place to stay to go walk to dinner and then hit up a few pubs. Also we took a nice 5 min walk to the River. As my mom says .... location location location. This is the spot as far as that goes and a really cool setting indoors and out.

Went down for a quick break at the beginning of the month and stayed in the attic room which was very quaint and cosy! It has to be said that we found everything to be incredibly clean and tidy. The location is excellent for town, a nice walk along the river or a visit to Sean's Bar. Went into restaurant next door "Foodies" - its a must if you want to grab a quick bite!

This B&B is located at the bottom of the hill above a funky shop right in the middle of town. Parking can be a challenge. I paid 2 E to park for 2 hours whilst I got settled into the B&B. I later found a car park behind the building which was 2 E for the day Mon-Sun. Anthony was very agreeable and gave me a walking map of the town with lots of recommendations for food, walks, live music, etc. There are food choices minutes from the place - Thai, Italian and Irish - recommend Sean's Pub for a few pints!

My room was small (but it was for a single), very clean, great duvet. There was a heater in the room but I didn't need it. Newer shower, nice and warm, water pressure was ok. The place is a huge maze of rooms but has so much charm!. Breakfast was nice - lots of selections cheese, yogurt, bread, cereal, etc. Since the B&B is on a busy street, noise can be an issue if you stay there over a weekend.

Served the purpose for our overnight on the way from Dublin to the west coast. Rooms and bath were spotless, located right in town for food and pubs. Breakfast was juice, coffee, and cereal, no hot food.

The Bastion was convient, right in the center of town. But there was no Parking available except, in a pay lot around the corner. Because of its location, it was noisy. There was no traditional irish breakfast, only a do it yourself cold buffet of ceral and store bread. we had to even make our own coffee. Owner wasn't even onsite in case of problems. Choose another B&B if you are going to visit Athlone.
