Lovely welcome from Tony and his sister. Very attractive room at the back of the hotel (the Long loft room), very quiet. Continental but good breakfast in a comfortable room, which invites you to stay for a chat with other visitors. Location in town is perfect, parking is easy, restaurants and pubs at your door. No hesitation.

Room Tip: go for the Long loft room

Stayed for a night and enjoyed the eclectic b&b. Room was nice and owner Anthony very friendly and helpful. Great location! Cannot be more central in Athlone. Try the good Lebanese restaurant next to the b&b.

Our host seemed genuinely nice and friendly, and wanted to make sure we were all set to have a good time. The long loft room was very spacious for my son and I, though a bit stuffy, and there was a step up and back down between the beds and bathroom that despite warning, was hazardous in the middle of the night! The place seemed creaky and noisy during the day and I had concerns about getting a good sleep but it was silent at night. Well located to walk to the castle, restaurants and bars. Parking for a fee behind the building. I'd advice getting off at Junction 12 rather than 10 to avoid narrow streets and lots of traffic getting to the bridge at the castle.

Location is ideal as it is close proximity to the town centre and is close to everything. The B&B itself is lovely and spacious the rooms are lovely and is also quiet. Would definitely stay there again

We stayed here for 1 night and would certainly stay again.
The rooms are basic, comfortable and very clean.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Location is excellent with some of the best bars and restaurants right on the door step.
We look forward to our next visit.

Take a look at the photos of Bastion on the website - it's a breath of fresh air! We stayed in the loft room which was full of plants, windows, and eclectic artwork. The beds were comfortable and the room clean, with a reasonable rate even with the drama festival in town (by coincidence). Although there was not hot breakfast, Anthony provided a great spread of yogurt, fruit, bagels, toast, cheese, juice, coffee an tea.

Antony was friendly and helpful, both in making arrangements and in advising us of things to do. Unfortunately, there's not a lot to do in Athlone in the evening except eat or go to a pub. During the day, a few shops are open but the only one that we really liked was the Bastion Gallery located next door to the B&B, and they're only open on some days and not until 12:30. The Athlone Castle was also worth a visit.

My daughter and I found this place on line before our September trip a couple of years ago and I always meant to review it, as it so deserves a good one. I called Anthony from the US to ask a few questions about driving from Dublin to Athlon and he was very helpful. I just cannot imagine anybody not loving this place--especially if you are lucky enough to get the "loft room". The space up there is huge, and the beds super comfortable. Yes, there's a space heater, but it did the job nicely, and the crazy montage of ceramics in the bathroom was delightful. The whole place is almost a museum of the fun, the beautiful, and the bizarre, including a stuffed albino otter in a glass case. We found we were near to everything--and just a quick walk to the little castle on the wild banks of the rushing black river Shannon. Be sure to take the self-tour there and experience the most delightful little peculiar museum. No parking issues. I don't know why anybody would object to a self-serve breakfast from a table literally groaning with selections of cereals, breads, pastries, fruit and many juices and other beverages including unlimited coffee. We had thought of Athlon as a "stop over" on our way to Galway, but would love to spend a bit more time there--especially in this lodging. If you want a modern hotel with all amenities and luxuries, this would not be it. But as for comfort, hospitality, access to everything in town, reasonable price, and just plain fun, don't skip this. What a great start to a nearly flawless ten-day driving vacation.

Room Tip: Book in advance to get the larger upstairs loft room which is converted from an old dorm for young t...
