“A very friendly place to stay.”
Reviewed 12 September 2013 via mobile

I recently stayed here for 2 nights and attended a wedding at the hotel and I found it a most enjoyable stay in a nice and friendly place. The staff could not do enough for us and were as pleasant as they come. Located outside town but quite easy to get into Athlone. Although taxis were very pricey I would recommend this as a great place to stay.

Rooms were well maintained and maids were very polite and didn't just barge into the room like some other hotels. I never got to use the leisure facilities but from what I saw they were well appointed and well maintained.

So if you are looking for a great place to stay in a beautiful part of Ireland this is the place for you.

Myself and my boyfriend checked in on Saturday around 5pm. We stayed for 2 nights in 2 different rooms as there was complications with the booking Yourreservations lady agreed to a complimentary spa treatment for me because of the mix up with the booking. We didn't mind changing rooms as both rooms were beautiful. On check in the receptionist was friendly and helpful. We mentioned the spa treatment to her and it was just a coincidence that the lady who did the treatment s was standing at reception. This lady had a terrible manner and certainly did not want to do a treatment on a sat eve as she obviously wanted out early as it said in the brochure the spa opens until 7 but she told us in a quick sharp tone it closes at 6. I then suggested Monday but again she snapped we close Sundays and mondays!! A very rude ignorant girl, how anyone goes near her for any treatment s is beyond me! I didn't say anythin at the hotel but I felt the general manager should know. Also if they do close at 6 then the information on the brochure is incorrect! All other staff were lovely and the food was delicious but you definitely need to sort out your Zen beautician with her terrible manners and get someone who smiles and is helpful! !! I would like to hear feedback from a manager please! Thank you!

Dear Armaghgally09,
Delighted as I am regarding your general comments regarding our hotel rooms and excellent food I am naturally disappointed that you felt one of our team let us down as normally this is one of the strengths of the hotel. The girl in question has previously received top marks from quite a number of our spa goers and so this makes your experience all the more disappointing.

I will be in touch shortly to discuss your comments in detail.

Kind regards

Michael

This hotel is very good but there are several improvements that could be made. First of all the positives: staff were helpful and friendly - we asked for a flask of coffee at breakfast and there was no problem; rooms were spacious and clean; the atmosphere in the hotel was good - lively crowd but not noisy or boisterous; brown bread at breakfast is delicious and the bar food is ok (better on the Saturday night). The downside: only one bedside lamp was working and when we told staff about it the broken lamp was removed but not replaced! Wi-Fi doesn't reach the corridor in the wing near the leisure centre - when we reported this we were offered a different room, but if Wi-Fi is advertised as part of the package it needs to be widely available. Rooms have no temperature control and were very hot even with a fan (and a fan going all night can be very noisy). Signage for the hotel is terrible - I drove past it twice! Overall the stay was enjoyable but this could be an excellent hotel if there was more attention to these kinds of details.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has Wi-Fi

My wife and I stayed here last weekend while attending the Game Fair at Birr Castle.. First of all it,s not in Athlone itself but in the outskirts ie 5 - 7 minute drive .. so no you would not walk it unless you were daft, or could not afford a taxi.. The staff were 100% brilliant , very helpfull , friendly etc so no complaints there. The room we had was spotless , with king sized bed , tea & coffee making , tv , wifi was difficult at first but when my wife placed her notebook by the window she managed to connect ok. Wifi was easy from the lobby. Breakfast was typically Irish ie excellent with everything one could wish and self service. Dinner at night wasn,t great but not bad . However our two night stay was ruined by a wedding party on the first night and some other stag/hen/birthday party the next night. Being Irish myself I am shamed at the total lack of respect shown by these party types to other hotel guests . They just don,t seem to give a toss at who they keep up at night while going to and from their rooms , banging doors, loud talking at 2am etc in the hallways. As for the music or din as I would call it - it went on till 1:30/2am each night/morning - totally unacceptable . It makes me wonder if these loudmouths have ever been out of Ireland as they would not get away with this type of behaviour in N.Ire or in mainland Uk.. Would we go back - yes but only if there were no parties or weddings on. I was not in the leisure side of the hotel but my wife was and she said it was grubby ie the water in the pool and jacouzi needed a good cleaning. She put that down to the leisure side being used by the general public who tend to ignore the basic rules before entering swimming pools etc..

Room Tip: Ask if there are any weddings etc on for their planned dates - if so go elsewhere.

Dear Lovesalaugh,

Thank you for your positive review of our property although we are disappointed that the wedding guests you encountered somewhat took the gloss off your stay. Unfortunately we cannot be held responsible for the behaviour of a handful of people who are set on making noise into the early hours.
On a future visit to Athlone please make your booking through myself and I will endeavour to have you upgraded.

Thank you

Michael

Myself and my husband stayed here on the 28/29 of august. We got a deal on groupon for b&b, a dinner with glass of wine for €119.00. We checked in that evening and it was fast and friendly. The room was big and comfortable, the bathroom was big too, but the bathroom floor had large footprints all over it, so that could have been cleaner. Then we went to the bar and ordered food from the bar menu , one burger and one steak, both were delicious. Breakfast both mornings were really good even tough the hotel was busy the was plenty off everything, fresh and hot. We had dinner in the restaurant too which we were allowed to upgrade and it was fantastic. This hotel is not in a great location but don't let that put you off, the food is excellent, but it's the staff that make it greatn (special mention to Tony who seemed to everywhere and always happy, and also to Ciara in zen beauty who let me avail of an offer even when i didn't book it ). Looking forward to returning.

What an excellent place to stay. Unfortunately we only spent one night here on our way to waterford. We got an excellent deal through Groupon for a family room. I would love to return at a later date for a longer stay. Food was excellent together will staff, entertainment, pool facilities, decor, cleanliness etc Overall a pleasant and relaxing experience. Would highly recommend.

Myself, my husband and our 8 year old daughter spent 4 days in the Athlone Springs this summer and had a really enjoyable stay. I believe the hotel offered extremely good value for money for a family on a budget. The leisure centre is definitely the hotel's greatest asset - big pool and clean facilities - great for kids - as was the kids club which our daughter really enjoyed. Rooms were clean and food served of high quality.
Only comments I would make is that the bar/lounge is a bit small and the appearance of the area outside the hotel could be improved as it is a bit shabby and lets down the nice interior.
