“The spirit of Waterville”

Tech Amergin Community Arts & Education Centre
Ranked #8 of 20 things to do in Waterville
Attraction details

So much imagination and hard work has gone into sustaining this arts centre in a community which is relatively remote and isolated - what impresses is not just the quality of the art and artistic activity that it hosts, but the string feeling that this place belons=gs to the community itself.

Having arrived to live in Kerry my sister and I were very impressed with the centre and met someone who knew our family who is the Manager and gave us a view of the theatre the exhibition of the Cable Station that our grandfather used to work in and made plans to visit on Saturday for a concert. This is a superb community centre that shows movies on the last Thursday of each month at 8pm, and at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month. There is a €5 admission charge for each film. The centre is also the permanent home to ‘The Story of Waterville Cable Station Exhibition’, which tells the story of the first transatlantic cable which was laid from Waterville and the local history until its closure. There are also temporary exhibitions well worth seeing, so it is a good idea to follow Tech Amergin on social media. It is even possible to enjoy an evening of live music here. For locals there is a wide variety of topics to learn; bee keeping, web design, art, etc. The list of subjects seems endless and wide ranging. This would be an impressive centre in a large city, but for a community of five hundred odd people, this is truly superb.

Recently they showed the Hundred Foot Journey (free!) in the afternoon. That same night they had a photography exhibit and lecture by a local photoshop expert.

There's always something happening here! And they have a museum area on the Transatlantic cable from the 1880's.

It's worth a look when you're staying in Waterville.

This community center has a great deal to participate in, whether you're a local or a tourist!

Whether movies, creative writing classes, traditional Irish dances, art exhibits, history exhibits of the Cable Station and its benefit to the area (and Europe!), yoga, musical entertainment or ANYTHING interests you, this is it.

If you're on vacation and finished your book - buy a used one from their library! If you like to see art created by non professionals, here's an exhibit of very nice work - some for sale!

Check their website when you visit in case you can add a short "local" experience to your trip through Waterville.
