We hiked from Kenmare to Castletownbere. Although the trails are well marked it is not a groomed track as such. The views are breath taking in every direction. Water-proof shoes are a must. Hiking poles are helpful. Peaceful and secluded.

“breathtaking views”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

We drove the ring of Beara the day after we drove the ring of Kerry. And what a difference. No tour buses, no towns where all the tourists are packed together, no crowd in the parking lot of a viewing point. Just us, a local farmer and some cows. We drove the ring counterclockwise opposite off what most recommend. The roads were very narrow and we were lucky not to cross other cars in the narrowest areas. We only got blocked by some cows, but that's quite charming and part of the tour. We made a little walk of 5 kms in the Ardgroom area( Pulleen loop) that was really nice. It took us 1 hour 20 minutes but we had a picnic halfway. We crossed some beautiful caves ( which you can also visit without making the whole walk, it's just a few minutes to get there), nice cliff views and beautiful landscapes. The little towns on the way were very pretty with the coloured houses. It took us an entire day to do the ring. We stopped regularly to enjoy the view and the silence. We ended in Glengariff nature reserve and took the small walk tot the waterfall. That was a real disappointment. It wasn't even worth a picture. At the end we were very glad to finally drive a main road where you can actually drive 100 kms/h. So there we were glad that we drove counterclockwise. But of you have to choose between the Ring of Kerry or the ring of Beara, I would recommend Beara.

The wild Atlantic way along the beara peninsula is undoubtedly one of the best of its type . The beara way is an amazing walk along the mighty North Atlantic. All the way in car or on foot you come across amazing breathtaking views if both the ocean bag the rugged mountains .

“Great scenery”

A lovely scenic route to drive. Fantastic views. Some of the roads are very narrow so look out for cyclists and walkers. Try to time your trip to arrive at the Dursey island cable car during operating times.
