“Our saving grace!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2013

After a horrendous hostel experience the day before we were lucky to stumble upon this treasure. As soon as Mrs. Butler opened the door to her establishment and questioned my sanity of not having reservations with three children in tow I knew this was the place for us. We could not have found a better place to stay even if I had done months of research on Tripadvisor. Our three girls were so excited to stay here and everything was just wonderful. Our rooms were so clean (you could eat off the floor) and comfortable. The lounge was an oasis of tea, cookies and comfort for our girls. Breakfast was wonderful and memorable, our daughter is still talking about how good the eggs were. When we return to Ireland this will be on our definite list of places to return to and stay more than one night. Thank you Mrs. Butler!

We loved our stay at the Carrigeen Castle. Such an unusual experience !
Peggy is warm, welcoming and quite a character ! She puts out a fabulous breakfast.
The rooms are quaint and comfortable. Don't expect to get the internet, as castle walls and wifi don't mix well.

Room Tip: spending a few dollars more for the ensuite is worth it.

My family loved staying at Carrigeen Castle. We wanted to stay in a castle while in Ireland and this small castle/home experience was perfect. Peig Butler is a gem. She holds old values that are hard to find in the world anymore which makes the experience that much more authentic. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable with an outstanding Irish breakfast. Walking distance to town and the pubs. Put this on your list of must places to spend the night if close to Cahir.

We loved this C19 castle/prison from the time of hauling the cases up the spiral staircase. Room was spotless very comfortable, nice bathroom, linen etc. The only place in Ireland offering heating in June (it was quite cold). Romantic breakfast room, excellent breakfast (raspberry jam second to none). Mrs Butler has very high standards and really cares for your comfort. Nice grounds, views, 5 minutes to main square. 3 places to eat. Cahir is a small attractive town with a fine castle. We made a really good choice.

Room Tip: Ensuite definitely worth the extra.

We had a wonderful time staying at the castle.  We were traveling with a
family four and got an entire floor of the castle to ourselves which was
fantastic. The castle is beautifully decorated and provides and nice homey
atmosphere.  Peig was a wonderful hostess.  She is a character but she was
so helpful. She helped us set up a meeting with our family living in Cahir.
Her breakfasts are delicious but are hearty.  She loves to socialize during
breakfasts and always has something interesting to say.  The rooms are
clean although not spacious, but if you are looking for a change from
hotels and a nice town to stay in, this is the place to stay.

This isn't the place for everybody. Peig is a character all right, she doesn't hesitate to make her opinions known, particularly about the ethnicities of her guests. "The Canadiens ask too many questions", "The Norwegiens were out too late drinking last night", and we Americans were too loud when we came in at 10:30pm. The bedding was old and bedspread pilled. She was also unhappy that we didnt eat our entire big Irish breakfast (I had sent an email prior to our arrival stating that we rarely eat more than toast in the morning). All in all, I wish we had bypassed this one and stayed in Kilkenny, the town of Cahir is just sad.

We arrived at Carrigeen Castle and our mouths dropped open as we drove up the drive. What a beautiful home and just then a rainbow showed itself over the castle so we thought it was a sign that it was meant to be! Peig was a wonderful hostess and her breakfast fantastic! We had the entire upper level of the castle and it was perfect, since there was 4 of us. We felt like we were in our own little castle apartment. Very clean. The spiril staircase was a chore getting up, but think of how old this home is! We survived and would come back again, if we return to Ireland. The bathroom was updated and very clean. The yard beautiful. What a change of pace of places to stay. And who doesn't want to sleep in a castle?! You know you do!!
