“anniversary meal”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

I booked a table at woodhill for our anniversary as it is the dearest place to eat in Ardara, It cost me 120 Euro for a three course dinner for two and a bottle of sparkling wine. The service was very friendly and warm and the food was of good quallity although my steak was very fatty, The problem for me was once we were sat down all three courses were served one after another with only a couple of minutes rest after each one. the coffee was even served at the same time as dessert so that was left. Then after we ate all three courses in about 40 minutes we were then left for over an hour before my wife went to look for someone to ask for the bill. What i did not want to hear from the guy behind the bar when i mentioned about the service was " I am sorry about that, The chef must of been on a promise" I now he was only joking but for the money i expected a lot better.

We loved our stay in Ardara and at Woodhill house. Our booking was absolutely random as Ardara was not the main destination of our roadtrip and what a lucky pick it was! The house just oozes hospitality. All the family photographs in the decor make you feel as if you are visiting friends rather than being a paying guest. Room was clean, comfortable and very homey. We didn't dine at the house but heard the food is quite good. Breakfast quite nice. All in all can recommend both the town (and it's 11 pubs) and Woodhill house.

Room Tip: The garden is lovely so you might want to ask for a room with a garden view

A lovely Country House in a beautiful setting with its own wonderful gardens. The rooms are clean & very comfortable. The staff are very attentive, courteous & helpful and mine host John Yates (a Bristolian) is a veritable treasure trove of tourist information. The breakfasts are delightful and the bar and evening food (when available) is good too. It only drops a point (in reality half a point but the system won't allow halves!) because the evening menu is Table D'Hote and although good value it is just too much food to take on board. A fuller A La Carte choice would be much better in my opinion. A minor gripe for some but my digestive system is still recuperating! Otherwise a most amenable & relaxing experience.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Woodhill House. If you're looking for attention to detail, superb food and friendly service this is the spot. Highlight for me was taking coffee after dinner by the fire in the lounge bar, looking out over Donegal mountains.

My husband and I had the most fortunate experiences while staying at Woodhill House Hotel. We stayed in the Coachhouse, first room on the bottom floor. I believe it is the room featured on their website for the Coachhouse rooms.

The house and its environs exude Irish charm. There was a lovely young lady who greeted us upon arrival. Her name escapes me at the moment but I believe she lives in Glenties. She showed us to our room, explaining the details of breakfast, the restaurant and bar. A few moments later she pulled us a Smithwicks or two as we were looking to relax a bit before resting for the following day's adventure. This area so embraces one to simply be; it's exactly what we were wanting this night as well every night spent in Ireland.

John was apparently on holiday and would return within a day or two. Much to our delight he did indeed return and provided a wealth of information about the area, the sights, the routes. He spent a goodly amount of time talking with us about Ireland, Ardara, and the ways to Slieve League (the "main road" as well as a country lane - we opted for a driver to and from after taking a go at it ourseleves; our Pixo, a gem of a 1.2 litre engine to us did not seem up to the task of climbing Glengesh Pass),

He shared his maps with us but shared so much more. He is a man who truly loves his land and Ardara, something readily evident through his words.

I cannot recommend the Woodhill House House enough. Go for its charm, beauty, and grace but most definitely GO!

This was our second stay at the Woodhill. Last time we stayed in a room in the main house which was atmospheric and comfortable. This time we were in the garden rooms and, whilst being very spacious they were in need of refurbishemnt and updating.

Last stay we only ate breakfasrt and it was adequate as it was again this time however, on this occassion we booked an evening meal and I was not overly impressed. It appeared that the Chef had the aspiration, but not the skill or knowledge, to present fine dining. The food was OK but suffered from too many things on the plate that didn't really go together and strange presentation.

I can't fault John and James who are great hosts but they really need to up their game to justify the good reviews.

Will we stay again? Probably but we are unlikely to eat in again.
