We chose this hotel as a good base for exploring the Burren which is a fascinating area of Ireland near Galway City. We like comfort, good food and wine and a quiet relaxing place to return to after a day roughing it outdoors. Good quality hotels in the UK and Ireland are never cheap and often the price / value equation leaves us disappointed. Gregans is not cheap but having stayed in many country house hotels in Scotland and Ireland on our hill walking weekends I can say that Gregans met our expectations. The housekeeping was excellent -- both in terms of cleanliness and being unobtrusive. The staff are professional and again unobtrusive -- but if you want to chat they are friendly. The food was excellent - as good as some starred Michelins I have eaten at -- the local beef and lamb especially. The wine list had no big names - apart from a half bottle of d'Yquem on the dessert list! - (I was tempted but resisted!) -but a decent selection at not unreasonable prices. This is a great part of the world and Gregans is a good experience. We also hired a guide from heartofburrenwalks -we dont usually do that! but we wanted to get as much from our time in the Burren as we could and would recommend them. It was wothwhile doing that.

An excellent hotel -- absolutely perfect if what you want is views, gardens, and above all peace and quiet! Very friendly staff. Good rooms. In fact we would have enjoyed staying a 3rd night.

The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars were the cost (it was good; I'm just not sure it's good enough to justify the significant increment in cost) and -- well -- the peat smoke. I know, peat smoke is something tourists seek in the west of Ireland, and (having used a wood stove for heat for several years) I do appreciate it too -- in small doses. Unfortunately once they lit the peat brickettes the entire hotel held a strong peat smoke smell, including in our room on the 2nd floor behind not only our room door but a closed hallway door. Part of the problem (in our room, anyway) may have been that we had our window open, thereby creating a draft that drew in smoke. On the other hand, if you're in an un-airconditioned hotel in August, even in Ireland, you're going to want to open a window for ventilation. So I don't think our behaviour unusual or inappropriate.

I can recommend Gregans for a memorable stay if you are looking for privately owned, small hotels deserving of your hard earned money and are hoping for comfortable mattresses and linens, wonderful food, good service, and a nice bath, and wishing for a beautiful garden with nice views. Our room was listed as a superior. It had a king sized bed and was spacious, well appointed, quiet, and spotlessly clean with a lovely garden and Burren view. Other nice touches were early check-in, internet service at no charge, and quiet live music at dinner. It was a good choice for our first night after arriving in Shannon. We are over 50 and this was our first experience driving on the left side of the road. Easy to follow directions were provided by their website and you will encounter only a few small, busy villages. Admittedly, it is expensive and it is now a delightful memory.

Gregans Castle is by far the most friendly and most comfortable establishment in the area. The view of Galway Bay is awesome to say the least. It is the only family run hotel in Ballyvaughan and The Haden family who are here for 30 years really know how to look after their guests. The cosy pub with it's turf fires serves great guinnes and the food in the restaurant (including local lamb) and fresh fish was tremendous. We were on first name terms with all the lovely local staff by the time we had to meander our way back to the Shannon Airport. This is a fantastic area for hiking so pack those boots !!
