Review of Newtown Castle

Newtown Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: Newtown Castle is a beautifully restored 16th century cylindrical fortified tower house - one of only few such buildings in Ireland. Having lain derelict for many years, the castle's restoration began in 1994, completed in time for the opening of the Burren College of Art in August of that year. Newtown Castle is once again a vibrant building in daily use, central to the artistic, cultural and educational life of the Burren. It is open free of charge to the public on week days. Newtown Castle is also available for wedding ceremonies, small private functions or company events.

We drove by this a couple of times as our accommodation was nearby, and walked by it one afternoon. I don't think I can say it's worth making a special trip for. It's on the grounds of Burren Art School.

Little bit of a climb as there are 4 or 5 floors. One has a nice history display. View of the area and Burren College grounds. Free.

Newtown castle is just a kilometer or so off the main road from Ballyvaughan to Lisdoonvarna. Dating probably from the late 16th or 17th century, it was the seat of the O'Lochlainns and occupied by them into the early part of the 20th century, then fell into disuse until it was restored about 20 years ago. The entire building is open to the public (notations accepted), with a small informative exhibit at the top floor. It is adjacent to the Burren College of Art, so you will find ample parking, toilets and even a cafeteria if you happen to visit at lunchtime. Not the biggest, oldest, or most impressive castle you'll find in Ireland, but charming, and one of the most accessible.

Well worth a short visit even if it's limited to just the walk to the top and a some information on the castle and surrounds.

It's attached to an art school, and they maintain the colony of bats who have lived in the castle for who knows how many years. It's a great place to visit.
