“Hillcrest House B&B Number 1 in Donegal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2011

Ireland is so beautiful. County Donegal is even more beautiful. And if you stay in a special B&B in Letterkenny called Hillcrest House that is not without reason approved to be the number one in the northwest of Ireland, then your holidays will be a hundred percent success. The most important factor of the pleasure you receive at Hillcrest House is Martin, the owner who is a professional (Award Winning) Chef and serves a varied breakfast menu and even a dinner at night if you let him know in time. He provides his visitors with fresh organic food, vegetables and meat produced in the area on local nearby farms. Apart from Martin’s ability as a fantastic Chef, as a native Irish he is full of fun and there is always a lot of laughter in his house which connects his guests from various countries very soon, especially at night sitting in the lounge. Prices and cleanliness of the rooms are unbeatable. Conclusion: You get good and bad hotels (still more expensive than B&B and mostly impersonal) and you get good and bad B&Bs. But if you miss this house you have wasted your money! Oh by the way, we’re from Germany and have been visiting Martin for the last five years for two weeks every year and will definitely be back as soon as possible. This year even our two grown up sons came with us and they’ll be back too. So if you plan to go to beautiful Donegal don’t waste your time to look for other accommodations.

I first found Martin and the Hillcrest House when I was doing an international search for a chef in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Martin worked with me "across the pond" to create a beautiful cake which he personally delivered to my boyfriend and his daughter.
I have been to Letterkenny many times since, and have had the pleasure of having brunch at Martin's, as well as participating in one of his cooking classes.
Martin is a consumate host and excellent chef, and "good craic" to be around. His delightful bed and breakfast is located near the town of Letterkenny, where one can enjoy shopping, restaurants and music. It is also an ideal location for those who want to explore the beauty of Co. Donegal, a county which, in my opinion, is Ireland's "hidden gem". The people are friendly and accomodating, the beaches pristine, and the landscape nearly untouched. I would highly recommend that all visitors to Ireland head Northwest to County Donegal and visit Martin's Hillcrest House for a genuine Irish experience.

After staying a several B&B's where there was little or no interaction with the hosts, Chef Martin came to the rescue! Martin's gracious mother met us when we arrived and gave us a choice of rooms and provided us with tips for dinner in town along with directions. When we returned we were greeted by Chef Martin. He engaged us with conversation and great stories. Gave us excellent suggestions on where to go the next day which were bang on! Toured the Inishowen Area and followed the Inishowen 100 coastal route...This this the Ireland you don't want to miss! Cliff of Mohr have nothing over this. After returning home Martin had Irish coffee for us and listened to our adventure stories of the day.

The breakfasts were awesome and we were disappointed that we did not give ourselves time to experience a dinner prepared by Chef Martin....

We had two wonderful days with Martin and I would highly recommend this B&B and this location to anyone. Thanks Martin for the scones to-go. It saved our lives the next day when we took on a 9km walk. A whole other story.

We hope that some day we can host you at our B&B and repay you for the great hospitality and friendly service. Best of luck with the upcoming season. I know that you will not need it, folks will be breaking down your doors for the opportunity to experience the Hill Crest House B&B.

Room Tip: Spend more that one day with Martin

Just like home, even better! Chef Martin welcomed us with EXCELLENT ( sure italian standards excellent coffee ) COFFEE and homemade scones, the best scones I ever ever eaten. The room was average and really clean, all windows had double curtains so we were allowed to sleep in long summer days in Ireland. The atmosphere of all house was really friendly, excellent wi-fi service ( not simple in Ireland ). After dinner irish coffee was superlative and what can I say about breakfast??? The best I EVER EVER EVER eaten. A truly culinary experience. Just 1 thing... sadly quite far from Letterkenny center...
But dear chef Martin, you are one reason we will return in Donegal!!!

Back at Martin’s again for 10 days. The fourth time at Hillcrest House we think that we now belong to the regulars. Travelling a good distance from a small town north of
Hamburg/Germany we found „our place“ to stay in Donegal as we got introduced to the real irish hospitality and especially to „OurMartin“ (the owner) who is the prototype of a genuine honest Irishman full of humour. If this Professional (Award Winning) Chef wouldn’t serve us the most delicious varieties of breakfasts and evening meals (which are also available if you let Martin know in time) and we had to eat German Currywurst or Sauerkraut instead (God help us), we would still appear at Martin’s door and stay with him just to enjoy his company.
The rooms are spotlessly clean and the prices absolutely reasonable. If you’re keen on meeting people from all over the world you may be lucky and have interesting chats in the lounge.
County Donegal is mentioned to be the most beautiful part of Ireland. We can only agree.
As a matter of fact we think Ireland is the best place to go anyway if you’re looking for effective relaxation. The more Irish people are around you the better for your own
wellness, especially when they are like Martin. And if you want to top up this wonderful feeling, just have a wee drop of Irish whiskey every day and the world will be alright for you as nothing can go wrong any more...
Auf Wiedersehen (Good bye), Martin,
and thanks a lot for everything. See you again as soon as possible...

The B&B is spotless and comfortable and the food is top rate. Your getting your own personnel chef along with the room. The owner is very accomidating.and great fun. We decided to take a cooking class and had a blast. I will never stay anyplace else in Letterkenny. Run, don't walk to the Hillcrest House!
