AnnaCarriga Estate
Reviewed 6 August 2014

We dined here with two other families, a total of six adults and eight children ranging from teenagers to junior school kids. We had a lovely evening in this relaxed location. The meals were very well presented and of first class standard. The children's menu was very good value at €6 and included the usual nuggets -and-chips option but also a wider range of choices with a squash drink and scoop of ice cream to follow. All well presented. The adult meals began with three starters: a large plate of fresh mussels, a delicious Brie, and a calamari dish. Main courses were also impressive with vegetarians catered for too. My partner had a surf and turf dish where the turf came with a very large steak as well as the fish; I had organic chicken which was full of flavour. Desserts were a delight and plates were sent back empty. All in all, a very high standard of food at reasonable prices. The staff were friendly and helpful, although a little unsure of themselves I thought. On a nice evening the kids can play safely outside or maybe paddle on the lake shore.
I notice that other reviewers have referred to a problem with wifi. While this is a bit patchy, it's an issue for rural locations in Ireland generally and not the fault of the venue. Anyway, in such a lovely place, it's a good time to give the phone a holiday too and enjoy the peace and quiet. AnnaCarriga is also a wedding venue and with such a beautiful location on the lake side I'll keep it in mind if any of mine are planning to get married! Either way, we'll be back again.

We got married last weekend in Annacarriga and it was nothing short of perfect. We had the use of the beautiful pavilion which was set against the beautiful backdrop of Lough Derg. The owners Jana and Jeremy were very easy to deal with and nothing was too much trouble. We booked out nearly all of the houses on site for family and friends. They were all delighted with their houses and accommodation. Some of them were couples who only stayed the weekend while others were families who stayed all week. The houses were clean, well kept and furnished to a very high standard. Furthermore they were very well equipped for self catering, going so far as to have a French press for coffee and food processors in the houses. The gardening staff kept a tight schedule and were often seen in the mornings tipping away at keeping the place looking lovely. The fresh flowers placed in the houses for us were a very nice touch. Annacarriga is a beautiful venue for a wedding and will continue to be complimented by us and our friends as a wonderfully unique setting for a wedding reception. We ate in the Brasserie a few times and found the menu to be varied and delicious. AnnaCarriga would be a fantastic base for a family touring the area with children, or for couples looking for a quiet retreat. It is ideally situated on the scenic Lough Derg, beside a water sports adventure centre and is just a few minutes drive from Killaloe.

Annacarriga is probably a good place to stay as a base for touring Lough Derg but not for spending most of your time there. The bar/brasserie on site seems to take advantage of being on site and is very expensive but only average food. It is well worth taking a 500m walk up the hill to the wonderful Piper's Inn. In this day and age you really would expect accomodation like this to have wi-fi but even in the brasserie area it's extremely poor. I would presume that the owners take more interest in the wedding guests rather than their average guests

We were at my cousins wedding last weekend and I must say it is such a spectacular venue! My only regret is that it wasn't available when we were getting married 2 years ago! The setting, the quality of the marque, the service was all excellent. We stayed in the houses at the venue and they too were lovely and clean. I can't think of anything that they can improve on we had the most spectacular weather which only added to the day. I would strongly recommend this venue for anyone who is getting married!

Unfortunately I have a really mixed review.
Let's begin with the good points:

The houses are very well maintained. The rooms and beds are nice and in a good standard. The area itself is also really nice and offers a good view on the lake. Boats can be easily used to fish in said lake and there's a well equipped utility room in the houses, including a freezer, where one can filet and then store the fish.

Now onto the not so good aspects:

If you have booked one of the houses and sleep there with more than 4 people, be sure to take some dinnerware with you, as there are not enough plates in there. We were not able to close all of the windows properly as they were a bit twisted and did not completely fit into their window frames.
The worst aspect, however, was the fact that the reception was almost everytime closed and the only way to reach anyone was to phone them. It's incredibly unfortunate if you arrive at the estate and first of all have to walk around the area searching for anyone in control to give you the keys to your house. The next unfortunate thing that happened, also linked to the non-presentness of the owners, was the fact that no one really explained the heating to us, so we had to manage it ourselves which led to a 189€ bill for a period of seven (!!!) days. So - if you stay there, be prepared to pay at least 180€ for gas and warm water. The staff unfortunately wasn't much of a help during checkout either, where they simply presented us with this bill and did not try to make any customer-friendly decisions.

Another unfortunate thing which happened was that they rented our boat to another family during our stay and we were only able to clear this up as my Dad was by chance present when his belongings were taken out of the boat he rented for the week. Needless to say he wasn't pleased at all.

So, as a summary:
- nice area
- good house
- the owners weren't really present anytime
- incredibly high bills

As you all can guess, we're never going to stay there again.

Just back from a lovely weekend in AnnaCarriga, family of two adults and two children. Location was great - it's a 5 minute drive from Killaloe town, feels like being out in the countryside but close enough to the town too. The owners Jeremy and Jana were lovely people and couldn't have done more to help us. The house we rented was spotlessly clean, warm and cosy. The rooms were perfect in size, not too big but not too small, and the house had everything that a family would need for a relaxing get-away. It's low season so there weren't too many people staying there, but we'll definitely be back during the Summer months. Playground is basic but we still managed to have a good hours fun on the swings and slide. The kids really enjoyed just hanging out at the estate's beach, skimming stones and fishing for minnows. The private marina is very nice too, we would have taken one of the boats out onto the lake, but the weather wasn't too kind to us over the weekend - we took a river cruise from the town instead and that was a nice way to see the lake and river. We would definitely recommend AnnaCarriga as a base for anyone looking to explore Killaloe and the Lough Derg area.

Really lovely location. We took two houses side by side with our sisters family, the cousins had a ball playing tennis and skimming stones on the shore. the houses were bright clean and spacious. while you cant really walk i to Killaloe it is only a couple of minutes away in the car. The owners were extremely helpful and friendly. We will be back as it has been a fantastic holiday.
