“Just Great!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2013

Booked over the phone for 5 night family holiday and first off was impressed with the very friendly and helpful Gillian. On arrival, we were unimpressed with the very dull colour the hotel is painted outside - although it is well kept it doesn't look very inviting - but views from hotel are to die for. Lovely bright interior with lots of areas to sit in and around reception.

Were directed to a tired but excellent sized family room having more toiletries than I've seen in some 5 star hotels. Although the room was very spacious it only had a small double and two singles so nowhere to sleep for 3rd child - we had been advised of this on booking so brought blow-up bed with us - hotel doesn't supply extra camp beds or pull-out sofas. On seeing size of room we wondered why sofa-bed or set of bunks would be a problem to add to the room - but there must be a reason! Tea/coffee making facilities were on hand as were hair-dryer, iron and ironing-board. Once settled in we set off to explore.

Fab leisure centre with lovely staff, pool slide is a hit and kiddies pool is a great size. Bar area is lovely with great little sunrooms to take in the wonderful scenery. Gardens are a treat and were in full bloom. Breakfasts and bar food were all delicious. Staff throughout were friendly and courteous - Gillian continued her superb service when we needed help with a couple of things.

The twin towns of Ballina/Killaloe are so picturesque with many areas to take a stroll. We liked it all so much that we stayed a sixth night! Weather was on our side but with places like this in Ireland there really is no need to travel abroad. So glad we found this hidden gem.

beautiful place.. stunning views.. the staff were all exceptionally helpful and the children loved the swimming pool. The menu in the restaurant ad just been changed and i would travel there just to have a meal at the restaurant. really really impressed and hope to go back.. very highly recommended. milk and homemade cookies available in the bar for the kids for just 1.50... such a brilliant idea.

We have just returned home from a 5 night stay in the Lakeside Hotel and we miss it already. We have been holidaying around Ireland for many years and were blessed to discover this hotel last summer. Where do I even start? Firstly the location is breathtaking. Secondly the hotel is everything you could ask for, the staff are the best we have ever had the pleasure to deal with and that includes reception, bar, waiting, leasure centre & housekeeping staff. All were professional but most of all very friendly. Our little boys have crushes on most of the female staff already. The family rooms are fantastic with lots of space. The restaurant is beautiful with amazing views over the gardens and lake, and the food was some of the best we have ever had. The kids menu is excellent and other hotels & restaurants should follow your example. This has been our third visit in the past 12 months and we are counting the days until we get to return again. To all the staff & especially Sinead, many thanks for a wonderful holiday.

We stayed at the Lakeside for 2 nights as we were there for a family celebration. The room was comfortable, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and we were particularly impressed with the well-kept gardens. The hotel is in a beautiful location right next to the River Shannon. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and the staff could not have done more to make us feel welcome.

Just home, unfortunately we only had a short 3 night stay in the Lakeside, wish it could have been longer. We along with our daughter, arranged to holiday there with our friends and their 2 daughters. what a good choice we made. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left not one negative comment could be made as regards the staff, the courtesy, friendlessness and over all professionalism shown to us was second to none. Yes the hotel may be a little outdated in parts, but I would much prefer to stay there than at some other 4-5* hotel where the smile and the welcome is so forced you to feel like turning on your heel and heading for the hills. Both the adults and children had a wonderful time, The atmosphere spreads throughout the hotel with all guests been infected by the relaxed and friendly aura that permeates the hotel.

We so wanted our visit to the Lakeside to be a success having retreated to it many years ago when seeking a bolthole, and finding both location and hotel the perfect antidote to a choice of another hotel that had left us nonplussed. Unfortunately our visit proved yet again that if it's not memories serving poorly then at least the adage that it never pays to go back is one that merits more than passing consideration. We got off to a bad start with our large upgraded and attractive room immediately adjacent to noisy kitchen extraction fan that, as we were informed, not to be switched off, seemed certain to ensure disturbed nights. Credit to our receptionist for her handling of our problem and relocating us, but more was to follow with our so-called pamper package missing, an unadjustable radiator left on in an already sun heated room, sink plug in bathroom found missing and bedside light not working, while bathroom entrance, generally found immediately inside a bedroom's entrance, was inadvisably and uncomfortably located bedside. Our drinking glasses remained uncleaned throughout our three day stay and we had to leave a note to ask our chambermaid to leave windows open and curtains drawn in our sun-drenched room. Nor were matters much better elsewhere. Both evening and breakfast restaurant were inadequately staffed and we variously failed to obtain drinks with an evening meal and had to make do with a breakfast buffet table largely denuded but for ancient, dry and lukewarm remains, with coffee service also not forthcoming. The hotel has wonderful views of the Shannon, its location suggesting a veritable oasis and certainly its garden complimented the impression until one looked into the summerhouse which was simply filthy. And another of the hotel's attractions would certainly be its leisure facility. How strange then that there is no promotional literature to be found even in the complex itself and little if anything done to sell this asset to hotel guests. Comment card, dutifully completed, returned home with us, the charming receptionist checking us out playing havoc with my conscience, but I really must get it posted off tomorrow!

Room Tip: Be sure not to have a room adjacent to the kitchen extractor fan. Best to pay for a room with a view...
