From April 13th-15th we booked a stay in Farnham Estate as a romantic and luxurious getaway. When we arrived we were very impressed by the extensive grounds and the remarkable period house which had been beautifully resorted and tastefully redorated with modern extensions in a beautiful woodland setting. We had booked a suite, which upon arrival we were very impressed with, it was an amazingly magnificient room. We changed into our robes and headed to the fabulous spa and enjoyed the outdoor heated pool with beatuful views of the rolling countyside and the sauna and steam room. However this was where our enchantment ended. After the sap we headed for lunch in the Botanic Bar, a number of staff members were faffing about not sure what to do. The table we were sitting at was dirty .After 10 minutes nobody came to take our order, i had to search out a menu myself and then stand at the bar for another 10 minutes before anyone took our order, our table was never cleaned and the wrong drinks order arrived which we were subseqently charged extra for. The level of bad service from inexperienced staff worsened over the duration of out stay. That night we could not sleep due to a noisy generator loacted beside our suite. The following day we requested to be moved. We were located to a smaller suite but were still required to pay the same rate. We were told our luggage would be moved at 12.00 but when we returned to the room at 2.00pm it had not been done and we moved ourselves after waiting for 20 minutes in the lobby for someone to give us a key. Our dinner which was included in the rate on the Friday night was way below par for a 4star hotel to be offering. The following night we ventured to the Olde Post Inn in Cloverhill a truly sumptious feast and well worth the visit. After a gruelling check out on the Sunday we vowed we would never return to this "Faluty Towers" fiasco.

I stayed at this hotel with my wife over the Easter break for 2 nights, this was our second visit in two months. The room was good in size, nice and comfortable. They have free internet access in your room if you bring your laptop. The main reason we choose to return to this hotel was because of the spa facilities. We were very impressed with these facilities on our first visit. My wife had a massage/facial both times and she thought they were excellent.

There is no mobile phone coverage at the hotel so you have to go down to the carpark/grounds to use your mobile. Thought… ok it’s a Spa they are trying to induce peace and tranquillity, (although some guy was loudly using his in the relaxation room in the Spa..hello…don’t know how he got it to work, must have been a new zooped up handset!) The fact that you can’t use your mobile, therefore you would probably want to use the room phone…be warned they charged me €1/min for a call to N.Ireland! Bit of a rip off I thought…no mention of call charges in the in-room info pack! In-room dining menu is non-existent!

As it was Easter Monday I was happily settling down to watch the racing on Channel4 for the day while my wife went off to enjoy the spa. Only to find out that my tv didn’t get that Channel, phoned reception and the manager came up. She checked my tv and checked another tv in another room to make sure that the channel wasn’t down, but no it was my tv that was faulty. She told us it couldn’t be fixed and would we like to move rooms – this was our second day and we were due to leave the next day. I asked her could we just not exchange the tv and she informed me that there was a special box for each tv so this would therefore not be possible. Ok in other words I felt she couldn’t have been bothered…..a bit of customer service there would not have gone amiss!

Restaurant – this is a total joke.. at breakfast the two mornings we asked a number of times for tea/coffee and toast. The second morning after the 3rd request my wife got up and made a pot of tea for us, but no toast machine so we didn’t get any toast. Minor complaint, but that particular morning there was a queue of people looking for bowls/plates etc as they had not been replenished on the buffet line. Total lack of staffing, there was no-one on the desk to show you to a table so people got fed up waiting and just went looking for a spare table and looked after themselves.
The dinner menu – we had ate in the hotel restaurant on our previous visit and didn’t like the meal. We checked the menu this time and it hadn’t changed so we thought it best to go into Cavan town. We went to the Oak Room, excellent….easily the best meal we have had in a long time! The last time we were in Cavan we went to the Big Apple restaurant in the Black Horse bar, also very good…both good options compared to the hotel restaurant.
The foyer of this hotel lacks any atmosphere. The main bar is located a few steps up from the foyer, very open plan. They do have a cellar bar, but was closed over the bank holiday weekend on the Sun & Mon nights! Both nights we went out in Cavan town for a bit of atmosphere, a 10min drive.
Overall the spa is the only saving grace in this hotel, the rooms are nice also, but good service and food are vitally important when you are paying good money to stay in a hotel. Farnham needs to look at these two areas. I don’t think we will be giving it another chance as there are so many other good quality Spa hotels now in Ireland!

We stayed last week and the hotel itself is beautiful and brand new. The rooms are really well laid out and the surroundings were beautiful.
The spa and infinity pool were really well done and there was a great variety of things to do in the spa.
I had a treatment a facial which was very good.

we had lunch outside and the food was fabulous for lunch.
Dinner was a different story. I had a very poor meal. Not sure how you can go wrong with a buffalo mozzarello salad but they murdered it. For main course I had the lamb which was also very poor and didn't taste very fresh.
They did offer a complimentary dessert as I didn't eat either starter or main course and the staff were good in the restaurant.
It's just a pity the food wasn't better for such a lovely hotel.

The walks were also great and the place is really cut off and quiet. The old house is also well worth a look and the Cellar Bar was designed very well.

In summary, staff were excellent and attentive, lovely hotel and only criticism is the food in the dining room.

Just back from staying for the Easter weekend
The setting for the hotel on the old estate is magnificent. The drive in is lovely and it does bode well for the new golf course when ever it is finished
The first odd thing you meet is the car park, it is located some way from the hotel and there is no signage for you to tell you that there is a mini bus to shuttle you to and from the car park. It is also a bit weird that there is no from of shelter provided for you to wait in “for the odd wet day in Ireland”.

The reception staff were great and very informative about the hotel and its facilities.
Although we had specified a double room we got a twin room with the two single beds pushed together, this was fine.
As we had arrived late we decided to eat in the well publicized restaurant in the hotel, this was a “huge mistake”. There was no plan being used to seat people. When seated you realized that the tables were especially small and the chairs very uncomfortable. As the previous reviewer said, there were a lot of un-managed staff running around the place, they obviously did not have any specific ‘stations’ to look after as we were served by at least 10 different people.
The wine list had a poor selection of wines and they were very expensive, in some cases 2.5 times more than Tesco prices. As for the food menu it seemed OK and was priced at a level that you would expect from the better Irish restaurants. But once the food arrived we realized that it was dreadful. The service unfortunately was worse than food.
We did mention this to one of the mangers when we came to pay and he did agree whole heartedly with us and said that he had told the General Manager on several occasions that the food was way over priced (probably by 30%).
Much like the other reviewer we to eat in Cavan town on the next night in “The Oak Room”, it was brilliant, a fabulous wine selection and magnificent food and fantastic service. On the table next to us was another couple staying at the hotel and again they were scathing of the restaurant in the hotel.

On the plus side the breakfast was great, this is what the dinning area seems to be set up for, but a word to the wise, get there early as not all items are replenished once they have run out. But there is an enormous difference between the two meals. Though the staff were still left to their own devices with no serving structure or management in place in the restaurant.

The Spa, pool and Thermal Suite were OK, though a few of the showers and Thermal areas seem to be broken for some time. It was a bit odd not to have a member of staff to explain to you through the different areas, it was ‘every man for himself’.

On the whole it is a lovely place to go and get away for ‘it’, but just do NOT eat dinner in the restaurant.
