Stayed for two nights last weekend for a Bridge competition taking place in Ballybunion.
Quite honestly, having only peaked in the door last year I did not have much expectation but I was in for a more than pleasant surprise. The ground floor has been completely renovated and now has a wonderful boutique atmosphere to it. The staff manage a wonderful blend of being friendly and helpful without being overly formal or in your face. Breakfast was at a Cafe down the road, also owned by the hotel. At first, I was not too keen on this but it's a very short walk and one nicely scrambled egg and three coffees later I was more than happy. There was lots more to chose from and service was fast and friendly. Upstairs at the hotel is still quite different and dated. Rooms are basic and need upgrading but I understand that this is planned and by next year all will be upgraded. Carpets and mattresses need replacing but the basics are good. Clean sheets and a clean bathroom so for the price I paid (€40 single B&B) I really couldn't find fault. I didn't eat at the hotel as we had other pre-planned arrangements but I was sorry I couldn't. Based on what I heard from others who did, the food is close to outstanding !
With a view that you could not put a price on and if the bedrooms are upgraded, The Marine will be the true accommodation (as well as restaurant) destination venue of Ballybunion in the years to come.
