“Very Family Friendly Hotel”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

I stayed at the County Arms from 1st to 3rd July 2014. We got the large family room which has a king size bed, a bunk bed and a single bed also. We travelled with 3 young kids all under 8yrs old (no compliant from our kids which is a good sign!)
breakfast was good, good choice & no complaints, the bar food menu was very good value and the food was hot and plentiful. The Dinner in the restaurant was equally very good on our second night stay.

The pool was one of the cleanest and best pools I've seen in a hotel of this size and our kids loved it.
The staff were all friendly and local. The gardens where beautiful & large. with a little more attending to the gardens they could be spectacular.

All in all, very happy with this hotel and I would recommend it and would stay again. We were shown the hotels hidden gem when we were checking out on Thursday morning, which was a tour of their bedrooms which reside in the older part of the historical house part of the hotel. very elegant rooms, but not over stated in any way, simply beautiful.

There was some minor things which i could mention as a negative, but they are not worth mentioning as it was a great short break in a very nice hotel.

Room Tip: room 183 is there large family room with the bunk beds.

Stayed here June 2014. i went down with an engagement in mind and ring in my pocket, and had contacted the girls in reception to see if they could help me organize a nice room, champagne strawberries etc and they did an amazing job and made our weekend even better. They even had rose petals on the bed! When the deed was done the staff couldn't have been happier for us and went out of there way to anything they could. We then went into the bar for some lunch and it was such a lovely day weather wise they brought us out to a private rose garden out the back to sit down, enjoy and soak it all in. The staff were amazing and i couldn't recommend it enough, The staff alone has put this hotel on our places to get married list! Thanks again to all the staff, Ros and the other girls involved sorry but i cannot remember the names, A & J

The hotel is within walking distance of Birr town and so is not far from Birr Castle. There is also plenty of Car Parking and a beautiful garden to walk in. The rooms are modern and bright with wi fi available in every part of the hotel including the bedrooms. While I was staying there the hotel bar was closed for renovations but food and drink could be ordered in the lobby. There is also a restaurant and the food was excellent. The staff were most helpful in providing tourist information. The leisure centre is excellent. The hotel could probably do with more staff as a small number were trying to do everything.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the garden are nice.

Service was good, staff was friendly, the room was clean and spacious. There was high speed wifi available in the room. Diners in the restaurant were excellent. Breakfast could be better. The TV in the room was a bit small and outdated, but working fine.

Room Tip: get a garden view room if you can.

We have just returned from our daughters beautiful wedding in Birr. Our whole wedding party stayed at the county Arms and as mother of the bride I have to say this is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The staff were so friendly and efficient every room was perfectly matched to our parties requirements. The food was exceptional and staff were so helpful. A special thank you to Barry, reception staff and Darren behind the bar. Our stay was faultless. This was my third stay at the hotel and I would not hesitate in recommending it. If you visit Birr then this has to be the hotel you choose.

Room Tip: Any all good rooms

The County Arms could be a fantastic hotel but it falls down on so many simple little things that you are left feeling disappointed.

Our first encounter with this was at check in where despite us leaving it until after 3 before we arrived, the rooms were still not ready. A small apology would have been good but all we got was brazen denial.

'Check in's not until 330'

'But it says on the website and your email that it's 2'

'Arrh. We've had some people who've been late checking out. It'll be a few minutes yet.'

We get to the very nice room but it's only got 4 coathangers between two of us. We asked 3 times for some more and then gave up and left the clothes in our suitcase. Other members of the party do better than us. Some had 5 hangers.

The bath towels are like large hand towels and very thin.

The next downside won't bother you if you're not someone who uses the internet or email but if you do, you'll be very frustrated. The rooms do boast high speed internet but you have to plug a cable into a laptop. Of course, if you're one of the 90% of us who use a smart phone or tablet, it's absolutely useless. You need to go to the freezing cold reception lounge and access the wifi there. Not the end if the world if it worked, but it doesn't. You can log in alright but as soon as you access an app, it drops out. I'm pretty good on this stuff and I just managed to get my iPhone working on the sofa near the bar, but the iPad refused to log on at all.

Talking about the bar, it's not very welcoming because on one night it was taken over for Jimmy's 21st party and the next night by a load of wedding guests who had also taken over the car park. These functions are so pervasive that you feel as if you're gate crashing a party and paying for the privilege.

I can understand their reliance on functions to deliver income in a very depressed economy and in a hotel that's nearly empty during the week, but that doesn't make it any more pleasant if you are not part of the function.

It's not just the hangers and the towels and the WIFI. Nothing seems to work. The chocolate machine was out of order. The Sky card had apparently melted and so no footy. The door to the bedroom had to be slammed to make it close. On another occasion the batteries ran out on the door. It was fixed impressively quickly until the guy doing it told me it was his day off and he just happened to be in the bar. If he hadn't have been, we would have had to change rooms.

Good points?

It's in a good location about 10 minutes walk outside Birr, the hotel seems quite modern if a little poorly maintained and the breakfasts are good.

Stayed here as a member of a large group of cyclists on a charity run down from Northern Ireland. Having arrived earlier than expected the very pleasant receptionist informed us that the rooms were not yet ready but invited us to avail of the hotel facilities while we waited. Having secured our bikes in a room kindly supplied, some of our number went to the very well appointed pool/spa whilst others headed for the bar. Being a Sunday afternoon the bar area was quite busy with local diners but the staff were still able to cope with varied orders of lunch and bar snacks. All of our party commented on the quality and price of the food. (positively)

The rooms were all spotless and well appointed. After a night out in the town of Birr, a short taxi journey away, quite a few of us returned to the residents bar where we were very well looked after by Fran the barman. Snack food was supplied compliments of the hotel which was very welcome!

On a very small negative, Breakfast whilst served as opposed to buffet, was a bit meagre, with just one small slice of bacon and one sausage.

Overall, a very pleasant experience and recommended for either groups like ourselves or family break.
