Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

“Lovely afternoon”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Had a lovely afternoon with the kids. They loved the treehouse, what a fun treat! We wandered the grounds for a bit, had some beautiful pictures of the castle, and enjoyed the walk on the river loop adjacent to the castle. Would have loved to visit when the Science Centre was open.

Reviewed 6 July 2014 via mobile

Lush green gardens , fantastic walk through the unspoiled country side , with clean rivers and streams babbling by while you stroll at your leisure through the well maintained grounds of birr castle, this one of Ireland's best kept secrets!!!

Thanks you to the Rosse family for opening up their home to us.

“Gardens, Flowers and a Historic Telescope”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

The Great Telescope is worth a look and the gardens are huge! A very nice day out.

The Great Telescope, built in 1842-45, was the biggest in the world when it was built, a record which was unsurpassed until it was dismantled in 1914. It was restored in the 1990s and while you probably won't be able to look through it, it is still very interesting to look at. The gardens are a lovely place to go for an afternoon's walk, best in Spring for the flowers and Autumn for the leaves.
