“A great walk”

Father Hegarty Rock
Reviewed 25 June 2014

A great walk from town centre of Buncrana along what locals call the back shore - total walk takes over an hour - full of history and lovely scenery along the way - Buncrana Castle Ned's Point - definitely one to do when in Inishowen

Father Hegarty was born in 1649, and ordained by Oliver Plunkett, He was beheaded by the Brits for celebrating mass in Penal Times. He escaped and got into the Swilly, but the Redcoats convinced him to come ashore, assuring him he'd would not be killed. A fitting tribute to a local hero.
