“Seafood Surprise Delight!”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

We booked this restaurant whilst on a weekend break in West Clare. While chatting to the owner to confirm a booking I was told about the mystery menu and decided to book two seafood surprises for my husband and me!We were blessed with a beautiful evening and arrived to a table with perfect views of the setting sun. The owner could not have been friendlier and she was ably asssisted by a charming young waitress. Our meal was TRULY FIVE STAR! To start with we were given a 'rud beag' to whet the appetites.. a warm smoked makerel served on leaves with a tangy dressing. This was accompanied by delicious malty brown bread and a sour dough type bread, each of which we adorned with the makerel and dressing. Crab claws, simply prepared with garlic and butter were melt in the mouth. Our mains was black sole on the bone, served with a wine and butter jus with potato gratin and stir fried vegetables. The fish was perfectly cooked and the myriad of flavours and textures resulted in a most enjoyable repast. Dessert followed by way of a shared plate which included a chewy meringue with cream and strawberries, a chocolate cake which looked very rich but was light and airy and a rich almond tart. Strong coffees followed as we watched the remains of the sun fade away in the April sky. Generous glasses of house white accompanied our meal with our water being constantly replaced. A truly lovely experience and we will definitely be back as soon as we can! Well done to the owner and her son the chef... a special word of praise to the young waitress for her friendliness and service.

“Amazing Place, Fresh Seafood, incredible view, not a place to be in a rush.”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

We found the Barrtra accidentally and are so glad we did. We were there in April as a family of 5 and could not have been more pleased. The quaint Barrtra is not a fast food restaurant. The grounds, the view of the Cliffs and location add to the charm. The seafood is as fresh as any I've had anywhere, and the garnishes, herbs etc. are all grown there on the grounds. The Deserts, pastries were served on a platter family style and were amazing. Service is friendly, and they allow you all the time you want to dine and enjoy. The wine list was certainly more than big enough with variably priced wines depending on your budget. This is a place where you should do yourself and the restaurant justice and plan on spending a minimum one 1 hour. Teresa Obrien, the owner is hands on in every facet and very welcoming. If you are in County Clare, and do not dine at the Barrtra, it is your loss. There is a reason they have an overwhelming "positive" rating on trip advisor. We will be going back in August and I have friends going as well. Two thumbs up Teresa, great place with amazing food and views.

“OK food. Poor service”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

Went here with a group and availed of the "mystery menu". It was hit and miss really. I got a salad starter which was lovely. Steak main was good but although I requested medium rare I would say it was veering towards the rare. I ate it but others in the group sent back steaks as they were undercooked. Those in the group who ordered seafood felt it was good but not amazing given that this establishment's USP is seafood. Dessert again mixed - some in the group got a chocolate dessert which was OK but others including myself got a "friendship cake" - a fruit cake, quite disappointing, unpleasant tasting and most of the cakes were left uneaten.

The real downer was the service. The male waiter serving us was mannerly but a woman who I had assumed was the owner was drifting around the front, she took some of our orders but ignored us much of the night, even though the restaurant was very quiet. After the plates had been cleared we were left for 30-40 minutes with no staff member in sight, it took ages to get the bill. This gave us the impression that we were unwelcome and they did not value our custom. We left with a bad taste in our mouths.

“Tasty food and great service”
Reviewed 25 November 2013 via mobile

We got great personalised service at this seafood restaurant. I got a chance to try some new fish dishes since this is a get what you're given restaurant. I enjoyed the element of surprise that this included. The dining
experience was special and very enjoyable and I would. highly recommend it.

“Good food, average service”
Reviewed 28 October 2013 via mobile

The restaurant works on a preorder concept of seafood or meat dishes. We had €25 set menus with portions of fish and seafood without knowing in advance what we would be getting. There is an additional €5 charge for steak options. The food was cooked well, wholesome and simply. Unfortunately the service was lacking towards the end, but the staff were open and friendly.
