“This was a trip of a life time”
Reviewed 29 September 2009

We arrived at Arnold's hotel on September 19th. The only thing I regret is not getting out and taking walks immediately. The views are fantastic, the shoreline so close by I could watch the tide come in and out of the bay. I could see people going horseback riding from my room as well. The hotel was spotlessly clean and everyone was most helpful and nice. The food was FANTASTIC! They have wireless internet that is quite fast and very dependable. The phone calls from my room to the states were very inexpensive. I can't find a flaw with any part of my stay. I would stay there again for certain. The horseback riding offered from the hotel is absolutely top notch. The horses are wonderfully trained and very responsive. The views and sights that you can see from taking a half day ride are priceless. Dunfanaghy Stables and Arnolds hotel are a winning combination and I highly recommend them both!

I spent a week at this lovely hotel on a horsebackriding adventure and it was the most wonderful vacation I ever had. The hotel staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The menu was varied and the food was excellent. Our room was immaculate and very comfortable. The hotel offered many cozy places to relax, read or talk to other guests. The turf fire was a real treat. I stayed at Arnolds because of the horsebackriding tour but I wouldn't hesitate to go back to stay at the hotel for its own sake. In fact, I am hoping to convince my husband it would be a wonderful place for a second honeymoon! (The horses would be quite a distraction though!)

We spent one night in Dunfanaghy and stayed at the Arnold Hotel. The town was quite nice with about a half dozen pubs. They had some real nice music in all of the pubs which was a lot of fun. The hotel was around $150 US Dollars for the night which wasn't too bad. The room was very small and had a rather small bath and bedroom. We had a full size bed and had a bit of a squeeze to get into it. The TV station choices were minimal. The bar downstairs was nice but no one waits on you. I think that is just the way it is in Ireland...not sure though. Didn't eat there for dinner. Had breakfast the next morning and it was nice enough. I probably would not stay again but it was not that bad. The beach walk was terrific. What beautiful vistas are to be seen there.

We were booked at Arnold's for a riding tour as a package with their affiliate stable. The combo was essentially perfect. I felt at home, and extremely comfortable in the room, breakfasts and dinners were bounteous and freshly-delicious (if not complex), and the entire riding experience was amazing. Like a romatic movie dream come true. I'd recommend it to anyone, especially families where the group has even a little riding experience. Helen, the stable-owner, has a gift for keeping everyone safe and challenged at just the right level. And the Irish mountains, beaches, bogs and countryside covered by the tour was just as every American imagines Ireland to be. Traditional music evenings in the village were another highlight.

Stayed at Arnolds for two nights in July 2009. Booked via the hotel web site

The hotel is situated in the village of Dunfanaghy which is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The hotel is on the main road through the village on the land side i.e. one has to cross the road to get to the sea shore. The road is quite busy during the day though the traffic at night is much thinner and less obtrusive. When we stayed it was quite cool at night and we had the window closed. However I think we might have found the traffic disturbing if we had to leave the window opening.

The building is functional and lacking in character. Similarly with public areas (and the staff!).

We booked a standard double but got a family room that was bigger and had an extra single bed. There was plenty of room and storage space. The sea view was blocked by the buildings across the road.

The bathroom was quite well equipped and everything worked. Both room and bathroom where pretty drab and depressing though and in a serious need of re-decoration.

Looking into other bedrooms that we open for cleaning it appeared that they were in better decorative state - but were quite small.

Breakfast (included) was both good and plentiful.

Staff were efficient but did not go out of their way to be particularly friendly.

There was high speed wireless Internet in the public areas - though irritatingly the receptionist would not give me the code but insisted on entering it into my laptop herself.

Overall, having got over the depressing decorations in the room, we had a comfortable stay but were not sorry to leave.

Arnold's is the type of hotel you go to when you want to relax in a quiet atmosphere and not need to get excited about anything! The whole place is clean, staffed with cheery, helpful people (including the owners which is a rarity these days) and what you see is what you get.
The room we had was comfortable, not large but more than adequate with a view of the sea. Bit close to the road with the window open on a hot night, but all you ask of a budget hotel.
The other residents at this time in June were almost exclusively pensioners and the restaurant knew how to cater for this market. Basic, well prepared fare that such a clientele would prefer. Nice, but unimaginative. Prawn cocktail, fish and chips, grilled pork chop, etc.
Helpful link up with the stables behind the hotel that facilitated a great beach ride. They have packages for riders that seem very good value. It was a good couple of days using it as a base to explore the wonderful scenery of north Donegal.
