We stopped by Killary Sheep Farm on a day tour of Connemara and Galway. I had never seen sheep herded before and it was amazing to see how the dog could follow commands spoken (not shouted) about 300 meters away! It was also really cool to see how peat (turf) is harvested and get to touch the moss that decomposes into peat over the eons.
Tom the farmer was very friendly and provides raincoats, wellies (boots) and walking sticks - all very helpful on a blustery winter day!
I highly recommend visiting here, no matter the weather.

The stop at Killary Sheep Farm was not a planned stop, but it ended up as one of the highlights of the trip. Tom, the owner, was the epitome of Irish hospitality and incredibly generous with his time and expertise. Sweep stole the show as he herded the sheep, cozied up to the guests, and of course, posed for pictures. My mother and aunt were blown away by the experience and they were both very skeptical from the beginning, but raved about the visit for the rest of the trip and after we returned to the States. The only regret? We were not there during the shearing or lamb season, but even in late

Our group from Celtic Journeys visited Tom at his sheep farm. We saw Sweep, his dog, herd thsheep from the mountain to the corral by us. We then hiked up to his peet bog and he showed us how peet is harvested. Great time and we'll with the trip!

We stopped in at the sheep farm as we were driving past and were happy to find that no booking was necessary. Tom, the farmer, was extremely friendly and throughout the afternoon we had some really good talks with him about the running of the farm. The dog demonstration was excellent and it was great to see someone using old-fashioned shears on a sheep. It was particularly interesting learning about just how little the fleeces are worth and why. The peat bog was also very interesting and as a natural resource that is much more efficient for burning than wood, is a convenient thing to have on his land. Over the time we were there we really felt like we got an insight into a totally different lifestyle and the view over the water from the farm was beautiful. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours.
