What an amazing place. The staff really make this resort. They always greeted with smiles and were eager to help in any way. We stayed in a pool villa, which was great, but some parts of the room did show a bit of wear and tear. Every other aspect, however, made those few imperfections seem like nothing.

The food was great in all restaurants. My wife is a strict vegetarian and the chef in the main buffet was more than happy to prepare a meal to cater to her needs for every one of our five nights there at no extra charge.

The house reef was great for snorkeling. I saw a few jelly fish and many small reef sharks. It was an amazing experience in the water. The dive center is also a must - great service and friendly dive instructors.

We will definitely be staying here again!

Had a great honeymoon at Grand Centara end of July 2013. The accomidation was lovely. Stayed in a beach suite and loved it. The food was hard too fault and the service was 6star. Loved our stay. Had the best honeymoon treatment. If you want person experience and get spoilt this is the hotel to go to. The most beautiful place I've ever seen . Everything was perfect . A huge thanks to all the staff . The beverage selection was great. This hotel had the best whine selection if you love your red wines.

A very good place for those wanting to experience the Maldives with a younger family. Use the kids club for a few hours and go snorkelling yourselves. All inclusive was proper all inclusive with reasonable drinks - wines were OK after you'd sampled all of what was on offer. Cocktails lovely and lagers were fine. Food options were good. Nice Thai, Italian and Seafood was the most popular but with kids the classic buffet was frankly the best. They can then go to kids zone after they've hit the buffet. Spa was very good and a free 30 min session everyday. Boat trip also included everyday for our 7 days, but bad weather will stop this activity. The coral and fish is STUNNING at this place! Black and white reef tip sharks literally swimming at the bottom of your steps or beach. Snorkelling along the edge of the reef was brilliant with small reef sharks, an eagle ray and so many fish it felt like an aquarium! Also every day at 6 pm they do fish feeding a 5-6 very large rays come out and numerous sharks and a huge eel!

The service was good. They have a genuine interest in keeping kids happy, a lot of the staff get to know there names after a few days.

When we went (Monsoon) we had a few nice days and the rest rather windy and overcast. But that didn't bother us. Rooms are OK, not amazing and service is good but 4* not 5*. Overall the place is 4* but somehow it feels really good! Evening entertainment of the Maldivian drumming and the hermit crab race at brilliant.

We liked it and we'll go back.

Room Tip: We chose a 2 bedroom beach villa, but we will go for the family water deluxe when we come back!

This is our annual Maldives review for 2013 - Centara Grand

We are seasonal travellers to the Maldives, and travel with kids, so our priorities are slightly different than honeymooners. We look for a great diving experience, a good kids club, and a private yet comfortable stay. We have been to quite a few resorts, check my other reviews from past years if you are interested.

Let me start by saying that as far as Indian Ocean destinations are concerned, the Maldives are a class apart, both for diving and for its beauty, and it is simply very hard to get wrong with a holiday here. Having said that, like ANYWHERE in the world, you need to adjust your expectations towards what you pay for in your holiday. Centara Grand is a 4+ star resort. Is and excellent 4+ star, in that sense.

Overall Impression:
This is a detailed review, and if you are short of time (or patience), here are the summary of it: The Pros: Amazing staff, great kids club and facilities. Spacious and well kept rooms, excellent food service (specially at Lotus), good diving, good size island (not too big not too small). Well suited to both families and honeymooners (Island Club would be the perfect upgrade for the last one).
The Cons: a bit built up, reef is not the best we have seen (but not the worse – Lux Maldives, 5 star, has NO house reef at all, mind you) and some places would benefit from updating.

Detailed Review:

ISLAND:
The island is clean, beautiful and well kept. A bit built up for our taste, with beach bungalows being semi-detached and build very close to each other. Beach areas are, in our opinion, not spectacular, with sand bags and other construction debris, and water villas far too much on the view. The reef is not easily accessible from the beach (like in some other islands), but you have a good access to it if you are on water villas or from the dive center..
The island is not big, and everything is easily reached within 5-10 min walk through pleasantly kept pathways and gardens.

POOL AREAS
There are two distinctive pool areas, both were pristine, very well kept, and very good fun. Both pools are by ocean side (infinity edge) and by a fully equipped bar/restaurant. The main pool is open to all hotel guests, whereas the second pool is reserved to “Island Club” members only (kind of ‘upgrade’ on your all inclusive package).

ISLAND CLUB:
Island club seems to be an ‘upgrade’ package from your All Inclusive, whereby you have access to unlimited to some extra beverages (fresh fruit juice and fine wines), unlimited laundry service, and access to the exclusive island club pool located by the deluxe water villas. Worth checking the hotel website for updates as the contents of ‘IC” package may vary with time. (apparently unlimited diving was once part of it, but not anymore).

DIVING:
There is a good diving centre at Centara (Best Dives Maldives), well trained and extremely helpful staff, the diving centre is not overcrowded, allowing for a very good, almost exclusive experience suitable to both advanced and beginners diving sessions. Diving excursions go twice a day (mornings at 8.30am and afternoons at 2.30pm) but you are welcome to dive at your own leisure on the house reef and the FANTASTIC boat wreck literally just outside the diving centre. They provide PADI certification courses from 9yrs old up to Rescue Diver (for Divemaster courses contact the center directly). Obviously, courses and dives are charged independently, as well as gear rental. Snorkel, masks and fins are provided free of charge, any other gear scuba comes with rental price.
Suggestion: the boat wreck is a must see for scuba divers (20m deep). Many resorts bring their scuba diver guests here to check it out.
Water sports/sports: A good range of sports activities catered for, from a tennis court, beach volleyball and water sports (windsurfing, kayaking, banana boat etc…).
SPA: The all inclusive plan has a 30’ complimentary daily (YES, DAILY) massage to all guests, so the spa is very busy, but you can pre book your sessions well in advance at the beginning of your stay (recommended). The staffis almost entirely Balinese or Thai, which invariably means the massage treatments are impeccable. The spa could benefit, in my view, of a redecoration, rooms and changing rooms are below the standards for the maldives’ standards.

ROOMS:
Centara has a wider than average selection of rooms, which makes the whole thing a bit confusing, in my view. There are 3 types of water villas: Sunset, Deluxe and family water villas; and two types of beach villas: pool and non-pool beach villas.

The Sunset water villas are located on the far west of the island, and have, as the name says, a great view of the sunset (in fact, in this island, is one of the FEW places whereby you can get a proper sunset view). The Deluxe water villas are located by the edge of the “Island Club’ pool and restaurant, they are slightly bigger and more spacious, and are suitable to a more ‘private’ experience.

The family water villas are located on the east side of the island, and are very spacious, two bedroom (or more like a one big bedroom with a partition in the middle) suitable for families with kids, whichever age (water edge is cleverly protected by a closable fence).
Pool beach villas: spacious, with a nice little private pool in the back. The beach area, however, is spoilt by the numerous sand bags placed at the edge of the reef to protect from sand erosion, giving the whole thing a look of an army training camp. (Tip to the management: we have seen sand protection cleverly disguised with rocks, giving the whole thing a much MUCH more pleasant look).

Beach villas: divided both on north and south side of the island. South side (19-46) has a smaller beach area, but villas are closer to the water edge, have more vegetation (for shadow and privacy) and a better reef to swim. North side (99-112) has a bigger stretch of sand between the villas and the ocean, but virtually no vegetation or shadow (you seldom see people lying on the beach here for long).

Beach villas (we stayed in those) are well spacious, two storey high (mezzanine) and a very big bathroom with two shower areas (inside and outside) and a very big round bath outside. Rooms have two sets of flat screen tvs and dvs, powerful aircon and minibar, albeit the mini bar selection being very poor (understandably in an all inclusive, but still, disappointing). Rooms were well cleaned twice a day.

Room small disappointment: Beach villas have very small windows, so you can’t really see the beach or the ocean from your bed… (I know, a bit picky, but this is part of the maldivien experience…)
Room Tip: the resort website has good pictures of all choices.

WEATHER:
We travelled in August, the wet season, and yes, you DO get the wind and the rain, and NO, it is no fun at all, hence LOW season. This season has been very rainy, and sometimes it rains for 10-15 days IN A ROLL. So if you stayed 7 days or less, the weather may have been a bit of a gamble. Otherwise, if you stayed longer, you most likely got enough of the sun to call it a day. If you have the flexibility to travel later in the year (October till May) you will be WAY better of as far the weather gamble is concerned. You have been warned… kkkk

SERVICE
The service is what makes Centara unique. Everyone was outstanding, and to be honest, in the Maldives where service is normally exceptional, to be ‘outstanding’ is a HUGE thing. Staff knew us and our children by name, our favourite drinks, where we liked to sit at dinner. All done in a non invasive, always polite, manner with a massive smile on their faces. I’ve heard a guest talking to the manager and decided to copy here: ‘At Centara the default answer is YES’. That attitude really made our holiday special.

GETTING THERE
Flights to Male are mostly painless these days (we remember the days we needed two stop overs and a overnight boat ride to get here). The seaplane ride is quick and easy, but maybe not to the faint at heart: it’s a small aircraft, and could be a bumpy ride in the rainy season. A lot of people with kids do it, though, just in case you are wondering.

FOOD
As far as dining/drinking experience, the all inclusive of Centara is faultless. Breakfast is served from 7am till 10.30am, lunch from 12 noon until 2.30pm, and dinner from 7pm till 10.30pm. Complimentary high tea (with small sandwiches, biscuits, tarts and all the trimmings) is served from 3pm till 4.30. It is simply IMPOSSIBLE to go hungry here, in fact, watch out if you worry about your weight!

There are three restaurants and three main bar areas at Centara:

- Reef Restaurant, located by the main pool area, impeccable service and a great variety of buffet dinner and lunch (themes vary daily), with the addition of a excellent Teppanyaki area (booking required) where you can get a true Japanese teppan experience both on lunch and dinner everyday.

- Azzure Mare: Italian cuisine, with excellent sea food and past dishes, served by the water edge by the main reception and close to deluxe sunset water villas.

- Lotus, simply incredible Thai food restaurant located in the middle of the island, with all ingredients, chef and team coming from Thailand just for your pleasure. Menus change daily, and we highly recommend it if you are a Thai food fan.

DRINKS
The selection of beverage on the all inclusive plan is, in my opinion, more than sufficient. You have a wide selection of world wines and sparkling wines available all day, cocktails and beers. My only sadness is to see that fresh coconut water (from trees growing in the island itself) are chargeable, as well as fresh fruit juices, despite the wide availability of fruits on the buffet daily.

HONEYMOON X FAMILY HOLIDAY
Centara caters very well for both groups. I would recommend the deluxe water villas and Island Club upgrade for honeymooners that would like a bit more privacy.

TIPS IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING WITH KIDS
- Kids club was a HIT with our kids (6 and 7 years old). Wide range of games, video games, toys and a great daily program.

- Rooms have dvd players, and the hotel is well stocked with kids dvds.

- If your kid is a real fussy eater, NO WORRIES. Every restaurant at Centara has a special kids menu with the usual fish and chips, grilled chicken, spaghetti bolognaise that can be ordered both at lunch time and dinner. If still you need something special, just say it. The staff simply ADORE kids, and they will get out of their way to help you.

- Take enough nappies and wipes to last your entire trip, the shop at hotel did not have a wide selection of things ‘baby’.

- The rooms have a HUGE bathtub, it may be useful to get an inflatable bath from your baby shop at home if your toddler is really small…

INCIDENTS AND NOTE TO TRAVELLERS:
On the 20th of August 13 there was a fire at Centara. It did not affect any guest rooms or communal areas, but it burned down most of the offices area and some staff residences. It was a scary experience, but the staff and guests alike dealt with it very well, and there were no injuries of any kind. Having said that, the wireless and phone systems at Centara have been disrupted, so you may experience problems if you are travelling shortly after this review is posted.

SPECIAL STAFF THANKS:
To Anne at the kids club, for making our kids NEVER wanting to leave home…
To Shan and all the incredible staff at Lotus Restaurant: for the best Thai experience we ever had,
To all the staff at the diving centre for being so flexible to our (many) needs,
To Max and Kris and the management for coping well with difficult situations and putting the guests first.

Room Tip: check their website for pictures of the MANY different types of rooms...

We recently holidayed at this hotel with our 12 year-old daughter for 6 days. We flew in a sea-plane from Male to the resort and the views from the plane were magnificent, flying over the North and South Ari Atolls.

Check-in was painless and we were given a tour while being shown to our two-bedroom, detached villa. The villa was clean and well-maintained although the main bed was on a mezzanine floor open to the down-stairs living area. We would prefer softer beds than were available. We had our own small pool which was more than adequate for a quick cooldown or washing our snorkelling equipment. Other reviews have said that the best snorkelling is from behind the Dive Centre but we found good quality just behind the concrete beach protection which was about 20 metres from our decking.
It should be pointed out that the island is very small and guests have no interior to explore, about 10 minutes to walk a lap.

I had read on Trip Advisor that $ were the preferred currency for tipping and took along $200 in small bills. I had intended to tip at the end of the holiday but tipped earlier. I advise guests to tip as soon as they figure out where they will spend their time and the tips are shared so don't worry about individuals.

We booked Island Club which promises premium brands of liquor etc but these are chargeable if ordered from the other bars. The food at Island Club includes fixed 3-course lunch and 5-course evening meal which were of good quality but we often ate in the Reef which gave a good variety and was better if you just wanted a quick light meal. The Island Club was quite quiet so we spent more time at the Coral Bar next to the Main Pool - parents have a better holiday if kid meets other kids! We paid $210 per day for Island Club and that was probably not good value for the use we made of it. However for a couple who wish peace on their stay, it would be worth it.

My wife and daughter completed their PADI before the holiday and had a dive on the Reef with Yumi. This was very professional and enjoyable. All of the Dive Centre people were helpful and knowledgable.

All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Daniker (I'm sure I spelled this wrong) and Spoons and all of the staff at the Coral Bar for keeping the cold ones coming.

We stayed at Centara Grand in August 2013... this is our second trip to the Maldives. The year before we stayed at Island Hideaway (however it was closed due to refurbishment so we could not go there this time) and I have to say that in comparison, Centara Grand is not as exclusive as perhaps one would want when you are paying a significant amount of money for a holiday.

When booking in the Maldives I look for three things... a good reef as my husband is a diver; a good kids club... and accommodation where our daughter can have her own space/room.

We stayed in a beach hut which was spacious and comfortable. However there is no privacy from your neighbours - they are all semi-detached and built close to one another. The beach is ok but there is quite a bit of rubbish washed up, along with small concrete blocks and bizarrely, broken tiles. Sandbags are in evidence.

The reef is quite a way out and so not ideal for our 5 year old.... the best place to access the reef for snorkeling is off the back of the dive centre. The reef is ok and the fish life is good, but not as prolific as where we were before. I did, however, see a turtle - twice! And there are a good volume of black and white tipped reef sharks.

For children, the fish feeding at 6pm was good - there are a couple of regular rays that visit. Feeding the sharks at night at dinner time is also fun. The kids club was staffed by lovely and caring staff and my daughter really enjoyed her time there, in fact we had problems getting her to leave the kids club.

Generally the food and service was ok. It's not four or five star service but it's not bad. We had two instances of really poor service. One of the watersports staff, on a windsurfing board, knocked by husband's head whilst my husband was snorkeling; that could have been very dangerous and yet the response from the watersports staff was extremely poor. My daughter cut her foot in the swimming pool on a broken tile. On both occasions I have to say that I was not impressed with the resort staff's response; it was a bit vague and non-responsive.

So overall I would say that whilst we had a nice time and it was a relaxing holiday, there are better resorts in the Maldives and I would not return to Centara.

Room Tip: If you are into snorkelling, go for a water villa as you can access the reef straight from your room...

Dear Madam
It has been our great pleasure to welcome you at Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa and we appreciate you sharing your feelings about your stay with us.

We apologize that your room privacy did not meet your expectations and that you were not able to enjoy the beach due to the sandbags. I have shared your feedback with our Beach Team to make sure we avoid this kind of incidents in the future and try to hide the sandbags. The beach is clean twice per day and with a strong waves it is unavoidable that some debris will reach our beach.

We have taken serious note of your comments about the two incidents of poor service and we will strengthen our focus on our training in these specific areas. Please rest assured that appropriate action has been taken to ensure this mistake does not happen again.

We hope this experience will not impair your trust in Centara and that you will give us the opportunity of welcoming you again soon.
Thank you

My new husband and I had always liked the sound of going to the maldives for our honeymoon and this island exceed all of our expectations!!
We stayed in a delux water villa which was really spacious and cleaned within an inch of its life every day to get it returning to its shiny self!
The food....o the food, where to start, Thai lotus restaurant is first class and the azzurri marie restaurant served some of the best sea food and the best steak i have ever had! The buffet restaurant has a different theme each night e.g greek or indian. We stayed for 9 nights and no 2 evenings were the same, plenty of choice to suit all tastes!
The island is private but with a lovely vibrant and romantic feel in the day and evening!
The staff will go out of their way to help you!
I would highly recommend this island!!
Make sure you take enough suncream as it costs a fortune on the island!!

Room Tip: The delux water villa has a massive double bed, 2 benches which i believe could be turned into beds...
