I'm an American chef and chair of a small town Slow Food Chapter.
Fleur's Place is the epitome of local food...fish comes right in off the Moeraki boats. We were so lucky to find this fantastic local food restaurant. Fleur is super friendly and spent a lot of time telling us how she revived this old whaling dock/shed and the fishing industry in this tiny town. Totally charming and absolutely delicious. The real taste of New Zealand.

“Seafood, and not a chip in sight”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

I think when you see Rick Stein giving a seafood restaurant in an out of the way location in the South Island of New Zealand an enthusiastic rap, you know it's going to be something special. I'd been hearing about Fleur Sullivan for a long time through being a regular reader of New Zealand's best food magazine, Cuisine, and was keen to visit. The biggest surprise is that Fleur herself is manning the floor, and breezily chatting away to guests - she has an amazing amount of energy.

The restaurant is you would call seaside rustic and that is more than fine by us - a white table clothed 'fayne dayning' experience in this location would jarr, I think. There is no doubting the quality of the seafood nor the care in it's preparation. As we had arrived too early, Fleur sent us off for a walk where we saw the fish being hauled up into the restaurants from small fishing dinghies returning from the bay.

The staff were able to advise on a good wine match for our choice of food - we ordered a cold platter of smoked or marinaded seafood which was glorious - smoked cockles and mussels, raw seafood marinaded in lime and coconut milk, an enormous salmon head that had been smoked, and my favourite, eel that had been stuffed into bull kelp and cooked. There was more but these were the standouts and the staff were happy to bag up the food we didn't eat so we could take it away with us.

I can't wait to go back again but it will have to wait until our next trip to the South Island - I hope it, and Fleur, will still be there!

“A bit overrated”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

This can either be a bit hit or a bit miss. When it's good it's really good but when it's bad it's terrible. We did enjoy watching a sea lion follow in a fishing boat from the deck upstairs. He then swam over to the restaurant and was fed fish bits. Looked like a regular routine. We had the lobster and it was a bit overcooked. Will try again but there are better places to go to.

“Absolutely over rated”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

Asked for soup but got sea food chowder decided not to complain as it looked ok. But really this was the worse sea chowder I have ever eaten. Tomato base with 6 shells or more of 2 muscles, 2 cockles and 2 pieces of very tough grissly seafood unable to identify.
My partner had white fleshed fish but little else for $40 done that wont go back
