roisin83 I think you've got your borders wrong it is on the Greenwich / Bexley border NOT London / Kent border. The London / Kent border is another 5 miles to the East!!

The farm itself is OK, it is probably what you would expect 5 miles into London i.e. NOT countryside!

Yes, this is a farm run for the community but you must also remember when visiting that it is a WORKING farm and as such will have areas closed off at times for short periods when animals are being moved around for public safety........however, people are welcome to wander at their will and at no cost.....where else in London can you wander round a 'working' farm? Nowhere....... is the answer, nor could you wander freely around ANY working farm come to that......so, I guess that makes it unique! It is hugely interesting and educational not only for the children who visit but for anyone interested in REAL farming and all that it involves.......from haymaking to sheep shearing and lambing......this is a rare opportunity......so make the most of it! The work done by volunteers is extremely hard and very physical, there's always alot to do and not always enough people to do it, so please bear with us if things are not 'just so'.

So first thing, the review saying it's pricey is in the wrong place - Its free!!!

This place is great for kids, it is small so I'd say a couple of hours at most unless there is something going on - the place is run by volunteers and they rely on donations so there is not a fancy gift shop etc. just a few basic barns with animals (Pigs, Shetland Pony, Sheep, Cattle, chickens, ducks) and nice wildlife areas - last time I was there they had done alot of work around the pond/lake should be looking good now! Despite the farm yard being quite small there is a large area of open fields and woods surrounding it.

Overall don't expect Colchester Zoo, it's a nice place but bear in mind it's a city farm, there are animals, they smell like animals and they haven't got millions to spend on buildings etc.

Woodlands farm is a wonderful place to escape into the countrysidea mile from woolwich and in sight of canary wharf. There are birds singing meadow flowers two ponds a wood and green fields and an orchard. The Farm house garden is award winning and beautiful at any time of year. The farm is an educational resource teaching sustainability and protection of the environment. It manages woodlands and hedgerows Our limited resources mean the buildings used for school groups can only open as a cafe at weekends. To assist in managing the land we keep cows and sheep and maintain a cycle of new born, every year. As the farm use to be a pig farm we have a few rare breed pigs and piglets and we also have chickens and bees both for educational purposes and to provide eggs and honey.

Surly staff (I thought that this was a farm run for the community)--it's not clear what parts are open and which are not (maybe a dedicated greeter would help--I'm sure that local volunteers would be happy to participate). Cafe only appears to be open weekends but staff is not clear on regular opening hours either. Dark and smelly barns--very hard to see around. Not much there to attract, really.

Maybe worth a visit on one of their regular open days but I wouldn't visit when they haven't got a festival or something on--just not enough to engage visitors.

Thank Jill C
