This location is remote - it is 1.5 hours south of the Kona airport, one hour from Volcanoes National Park and 30 minutes to the nearest market. If you are looking for a resort town with all the amenities, night life and tourism, this may not be your rental. But the allure of this one is in the loss of those things - this house has quiet, beautiful views and space for you and yours.
The owner lives elsewhere and the caretaker lives just up the street - he is a positive character and full of stories of the area and what being in Miloli'i is like (this rental is not in Captain Cook proper, but a small fishing village further south). Be expected to hand him $20 when you get there, it is a deal that the two have about the house being rented out that the owner messaged out before heading there.
We slept 11 in the house easily during our visit -
Second floor: Master bedroom with a king bed, spare bedroom with a full bed, pull out couch with another full sized bed. Full kitchen, bar dining. Massive porch with ocean views.
(There are no internal stairs between floors, all traffic goes outside to the patio stairs)
Ground floor: Game room has a full size bed and twin-sized bunk beds. Bedroom with a full size bed and an air mattress.
There are also all the ocean swimming gear you may want to use, all in different levels of quality. There is a snorkel spot nearby that is good to jump into, and a public beach that is a 10 minute drive and 15 minute walk that is beyond worth spending some time at since the location is so isolated.
This home is perfect for families or groups with lots of room for everyone! It's cozy, clean and so quiet, and the view of the ocean in the morning while having coffee on the Lanai is perfect. Cheryl and Daniel are great hosts and provide lots of tips on things to do, recommending tours, etc :) It's a stunning landscape and a great home base for exploring Volcano National Park and the trip to Kona is gorgeous and not too far either. We will be back again for sure!!
So nice house. We excited.
I love this atmosphere that very calm and silent.
Also windy night was good!
Just perfect. House by the ocean, plenty of room, clean, extremely helpful hosts. Great to visit Volcano national park. Would stay there again for sure.
Great home with fabulous views. Nearby "hidden" beach was a real gem. We enjoyed our stay in this quiet and relaxing home. Nicely located between kona and volcanoes natl pk for easy access to both locations. Would love to return! Cheryl really took the time to answer all emails in a very short amount of time. Daniel, the house manager, was full of knowledge and gave great recommendations. My recommendation, stay longer than you think you want. You won't regret it!
Loved the house. Best place to stay in South Kona on the Big Island.Spend at least a week, you will be glad you did. Aloha, G&D
We've just returned from our third stay in the makai house and it is a perfect fit for us. We love its proximity to the sea, that the location is far from the tourist crowds, the quiet and dark nights. The house itself is ideal...comfy beds, ample bathroom space, washer/clothesline/dryer, beach towels, good kitchen provisions. Daniel is always warm, welcoming and helpful. Suzie is wonderful as well. They both contribute much to make our stay comfortable.
If away from touristy Kona is a must for you and you don't mind driving a bit for groceries/gas, then the makai could work well for you, too.
Thank you once again, Cheryl. We'll return. Aloha.
