“Doesn't meet its own expectations”

Myself, partner & her 6yr old booked to stay at 6 Watersedge Lodge, Stonerush lakes for 7 days (Saturday 13th - Saturday 20th) and to be honest, I struggled to understand why paid the amount of money I did. Overall the holiday was good, but there where lots of little things that spoilt the holiday and the experience. Allow me to go into more detail:

The Welcome:
Firstly, the 'welcome' we received was the worst we have ever experienced. Anywhere.

As we knew we would be arriving earlier than the designated 4pm time, we traveller straight to Looe instead of directly to Stonerush, to take in the sights, stretch our legs & kill an hour or two. We arrived at Looe around 12:30-1:00 and as it got nearer to our allowed check-in time, we thought we would head over to see if we could check-in. When we arrived at around, we were made to feel as though we were an inconvenience and a hassle. The lady behind reception (In the Old Mill) was surprised to see us, never asked our names or what lodge we would be staying in and suggested that we leave and go elsewhere.

After travelling for 5hrs, that is not the welcome we would expect from a "5-star resort". She never even said hello or suggested that we relax in the bar. We were told that "the cleaning team are running an hour an a half later than expected", I responded with "it says our check in time is at 4pm though?" To which she snapped back "it says FROM 4pm"... So we had no idea what time our lodge would be ready, she suggested to go to Looe or Polperry. It just felt as though we weren't wanted to be around. Bearing in mind, nobody else was at the site. We were the only car in the car park. We had already been to Looe and didn't really want to get in the car & travel again.

We had to ask the lady if we could have any drinks, we weren't offered any. Not for free, but you'd assume that would be the easiest money to be made; a tired family would probably want some drinks. None were offered. After finishing the drinks I ordered, we decided to head out to Polperro.

A while later, we came back and the car park was rammed. We went in to ask whether our lodge was available, still we were told no. So we got another round of drinks and waited.

Here is what I don't understand - If the cleaning team were running late, why were we not told before arrival in an email, or text or phone call? If the check in time is delayed past 4pm, as far as Im concerned that is the companies problem, not mine. We could have made plans around that information. As far as I'm concerned, I was checking in at 4pm & for travelling the length of time we had, that's what I'd expect. Or if there was a delay, then we should at least be made to feel welcome and have some sort of an apology.

We got so fed up with waiting around we went and spoke to the receptionist again. No update. Still not allowed in. The receptionist said that as soon as our lodge was ready, she would come and get us. As people began leaving the reception & getting into their cars to go to their lodge, had my partner not needed the toilet, we would not have been told our lodge was ready - as she went past reception coming back from the toilet, she just happened to ask again - We were literally the last ones to leave to go to our lodge. At 5:30pm.

The Hot Tub
For a start, the hot tub was not private as is mentioned throughout the brochures & was overlooked by another lodge. There was no privacy at all and we also had a public footpath no more than 5ft from the hot tub, which was a huge let down and major surprise. On top of this, one of their tub valves had broken loose before we arrived & wasn't fixed, so was just left for us to find.

After mentioning this to BlueChip, they contacted the lady in reception who explained to us that "valves pop out go hot tubs all the time, we will send someone to fix it" - no apology, no acknowledgement that it wasn't good enough, nothing.

The WiFi
The lack of decent wifi is frustrating because of how the brochure is worded. In the email I received after I booked, it said that wifi is available. Upon arrival at the lodge, in the folder, it says that "due to our 'get-away-from-it-all' location, we can only offer a limited service. Whilst the speed is capable of emailing and connecting to social media, we cannot offer enough bandwidth to stream movies online" - this is simply fraudulent. Had I known that the wifi was intermittent at best, I would have brought DVD's, downloaded music or had physical copies of things and not relied on the internet, which you said was available.

Neighbours
Two days into our stay, a family with a baby no more than a few weeks old moved into the lodge next to us, who would not stop screaming or crying. Which is no fault of theirs at all, but this lodge should not have been advertised as a "get-away-from-it-all" location, if people with children as young as that can rent the lodges. If the lodge is their second home, why place us next to them? Or ask is whether we would mind being placed there? There just seem to be no care taken in how the experience of the resort could appear to people.

Old Mill Restaurant
The onsite restaurant is a funny one to describe. Firstly, there is literally no atmosphere inside at all. We visited the restaurant one night for a meal, and where literally eating in silence in a very small space. People could overhear our conversation and we could overhear others... I say others, there was only one other family there at any one time. And apparently we had to book and reserve a table because it was booked to capacity - which was totally untrue, while we where there a family had finished and was leaving, and then one other family arrived before we left. We spent £89 for our meal, for 3 of us, which was nice - but would recommend going elsewhere, as compared to what you can get in the surrounding areas, it is ridiculously expensive and overpriced.

We went to The Plough (in Dulou, just up the road) for a smilier meal, and paid £49. The food there was much better and the place had an atmosphere.

For the 5 star, tranquil lodge getaway experience that it is sold as, I think it fell way, way below expectations. Which is really unfortunate as the lodge is beautiful both inside and out. With a bright open plan living, kitchen and dining area. Both the living area and the contemporary bedroom have grand ceiling to floor windows and you can step directly out onto your own decked terrace. The location is ideal, as Polperro and Looe are just two places that are within 10 mins of the property. Everything is reachable and there is plenty to do in the surrounding areas.

It's such a strange review to write - the lodge itself, physically, was very good. The location was great. But the holiday experience we where sold, was not what we paid for. And I would cation anyone looking to go to this area on holiday, as it falls short of its own standards. If you want a peaceful lodge getaway, go somewhere like Forrest Holidays - who nail the peaceful lodge holiday completely. Unfortunately, as we have been to Forrest Holidays before, that is the standard we compare it to - and this BlueChip holiday is a clear comparison. Forrest Holidays are much better.

Spent a week at this amazing lodge. The lodge was spotless, well equipped and very comfortable. The hot tub was an added bonus. The wildlife in and around the lake made the holiday, we fed ducks and geese, saw the resident kingfishers, heron , carp etc.
We were visited daily by a squirrel.
The on site restaurant was excellent with very pleasant staff. We dined in a few times and had takeaways on oher nights.
We will be back.

“Beautiful lodges in a stunning setting”

We returned to Stonerush Lakes after having a lovely holiday there in 2014. We booked Watersedge 6 as it looked the same as our previous lodge (which was already booked). The lodge was spacious, well furnished and spotlessly clean. However, the lodge was supposed to have a DVD player, but it did not have one - just a normal television. This was disappointing as we had purposely brought DVDs to watch. The management of the park is slightly strange! The people on site are nothing to do with the site Managers (Blue Chip) and can't help with any problems. You have to call them direct using a phone in the lodge (as there is no mobile phone signal) and speak to a call centre in Bristol. Also our washing machine was broken, which we reported. We are back from our 2 week holiday now, and nothing was done about either issue. A very nice lady from housekeeping came round and apologised and offered us a free service clean as an apology. We didn't take this offer up. She was very apologetic, but again, she could do nothing as she was not from Blue Chip! There was also nowhere to hang your coats up, so a few hooks in the hall would be very handy. All in all, I would recommend this park as it is beautifully set and the grounds well maintained. We also had wifi in the lodge this year, which we didn't last year which was a very welcome addition. It was also fast speed internet. A lovely holiday despite our couple of issues. I would definitely stay here if I go to Cornwall again.
