A fantastic break in a superb place, very relaxing you should really try it. Gifts were left, facilities fantastic. We really lived it. Parking available, very accessible for all, we took parents that have some mobility issues & no problem at all. The local facilities like the pub were very friendly & welcoming. Local walks available. Short distance to Plymouth & local towns easily accessible.

Having searched on the internet for 'unusual UK breaks' I stumbled upon the railholiday.co.uk website. I have alway tried to seek comfortable holiday breaks with a difference to build happy family memories - I wasn't diappointed. The Travelling Post Office is a well equipped holiday home situated in the pretty villiage of St German's right next the train station, it was very comfortable, clean and ideal base for exploring this part of Cornwall. It had an enclosed garden which was ideal for our dog and had a lovely seating area with a barbecue. The owners are very friendly and helpful and are passionate about their business.

Please don't think you need to be a rail enthusiast to enjoy this sort of holiday, it is a perfect family retreat which children can look back on with happy memories and think 'I slept in a railway carriage'

UPDATE TO OUR REVIEW JULY 2011

We have now stayed in the newly refurbished OLV.
Dave and Lizzy, and of course the rest of “The Family”, have done a fantastic job here. Gone are the two bunks and fold down bed, both of which were just only functional. Now there is a real comfortable double bed where the bunks were, and a smashing wood burning stove at the other end of the accommodation. Logs are provided, and a whistling kettle to simmer on the top. Next to the fire are two comfortable fireside chairs. There are always some little vases of fresh flowers, provided by Lizzy who will make sure that you are totally happy during your stay. The free internet is a real bonus as well, if just to keep a track on the train times.
We would like to try the Carriage at Hayle which is also adjacent to the Rail Station, but we like it so much at St. Germans we will return again and again.

The Travelling Post Office.
We have also stayed in the TPO. It really is good that this piece of history has been saved by Dave & Lizzy Stroud. Right along side the platform at St. Germans Station is a brilliant place for it. Whilst the restoration has made it really nice to stay in, the atmosphere is still there. You can read all about its history in the info books provided. It is a railway buffs paradise, watch all the rail traffic at close quarters. Stay up and see the up London Sleeper go past, then watch the down Penzance Sleeper in the early hours. As for the accommodation a real double bed is good. There are Bunks for the children and extra sleeping is in the drop down bed in the “day area”. The combination microwave stroke oven takes a bit of getting used to, but is just brilliant in the end. I just relax while my husband takes time to watch Dave and his crew on the development of the site adjacent. All I can say is WOW!
Another nice little touch, you will have your own key to your own private gate onto platform 2.

We had to make our update here as Trip Advisor will not allow two reviews for the same place. We felt that an "update" to the OLV was required.

Had a lovely time in The Travelling Post Office (Easter weekend 2011). Wonderful character accomodation in a lovely location. Lizzie & Dave were fab and we couldn't have asked for more welcoming hosts. Can't wait to go back and try out the other carriages :)

We had a great short break here in the Old Luggage Van, in this lovely spot. We had planned to travel by train, and this worked out really well as it was the time of the fuel panic. Lizzy and Dave were great hosts, and there were lovely touches such as the welcome pack and flowers. OLV really nicely finished and ideal for a couple and a different type of break. We walked a lot and also went on train outings, which are easy and cheap in Cornwall. Local pub was friendly and there were others in walking distance.

We stayed in the travelling post office in May 2011 and had a really enjoyable time which exceeded our expectations. A very unusual and quirky holiday accomodation, something very different which was very well fitted out yet regaining many original fittings. Very nice location and extremely convenient for train travel. We had a lovely welcome pack of local produce which was a very nice touch. Dave and Lizzie were very welcoming and took the time to say farewell on our departure.

We stayed in the Travelling Post Office in August 2010.
When we arrived, the whole carriage was spotlessly clean with tiny posies of flowers in vases in every room. The welcome was completed in the kitchen, where there was tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, juice, beer and even milk and butter in the fridge! I have never stayed in any accommodation where there has been so much thought put into this. The little touches extended to the garden, where our ten year old son found a set of flags to wave at the passing trains - every one whistled a greeting in return!
As the carriage was beside the station at St Germans, we took a chance and traveled to Cornwall by train leaving the car at home. In any other location a car free holiday could have been daunting, but here it was wonderful and part of the magic was having your own "key" to the station platform.
As a base for exploring Cornwall, this is outstanding. We used family day rover tickets, on one occasion to go to the Minack theatre (the bus journey from Penzance station is spectacular and the scheduled service in the summer is open topped). But just staying in and watching the trains go by is an experience, so even rainy days are interesting.
I found Railholidays online, initially we were going to rent the Old Luggage Van but as Great Western fans it had to be the Travelling Post Office. Our son was particularly impressed at being able to sleep on the top bunk and look out through the clerestory roof windows.
